It’s always better to have unfiltered ratings information instead of selected portions released by the networks in question, but in the case of Current TV that is not possible since the data is private, so we have to rely on what the network released today on last night’s premiere of Countdown With Keith Olbermann. It is only demo information for cable news networks’ key demographic of adults 25-54, with no total viewer figures. In 25-54, Olbermann drew a solid 179,000 viewers, almost 10 times Current’s previous primetime average in total viewers. He was far behind the cable news ratings leader in the 8 PM hour, Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly (735,000 in 25-54), and couldn’t match his replacement at MSNBC, Lawrence O’Donnell (237,000), but he was very competitive in the hour and crushed CNN’s Elliot Spitzer (89,000).

Perhaps those numbers would’ve been even higher if the age group was 25 – 60. I’m 59 & I’m a big fan of KO. Probably a lot of people clear up to age 70 are fans. We may be older but by no means dead yet!

It’s good that he bested the demos. It’s certainly better than the aging Fox viewers who believe that the darkies should be carrying their suitcases. But it’s what you should expect from viewers who have no problem with an obama impersonator making racist remarks but is suddenly offensive when he makes fun of the thin skinnes pathetic candidates for republican candidacy.
Anywho, I will always trust Olbermann over an illiterate clown, who looks intelligent compared to his daughter who is handicaped. Which, by the way, having a family member who is disabled, it only disgusts me that Beck would exlpoit his own child in such a way. It is pathetic that Beck would do that. The fact that his audience won’t challenge him on it, only speaks to their character of modern “middle americans” who know nothing about what it means to be truly American. Also, Current is in about 1/3 the homes as the other cable nets (more or less) and not always in the basic cable tier, so he’s getting a big piece of a much smaller pie.
I know Keith is going to be gaining everyweek. His show tonite was flawless. Loved every second. Keith brought MSNBC from the abyss. I can’t wait to see what he does with Current. Sky’s the limit:)

..spending my entire career in and on tv…I can tell you a number of things. 1. to get that initial interest is expected. he’s a name. he made the rounds prior to launch 2. it’s only a start. 3. as for cnn, the net should be embarassed, not just by this, but how the ship is completely rudderless. not a fan of fox news at all, except the fact they at least know who they are and do it extremely well. msnbc and cnn suffer from the ‘shiny object syndrome”, easily distracted by what seems to be the new thing. plus, there are waaaaaay too many layers of mgt at cnn. net moves at a glacial pace. still decent at the huge breaking news events, but woeful nearly everywhere else. morning show is a disaster, despite the best efforts of chetry as the face. don’t envy her. looks like am des moines. so, all in all, it’s no wonder keith can launch a show in a fraction of the #of homes of a cnn on a not-on-the-radar net, no less, and beat cnn. it’s also shocking and embarassing for cnn.
