It looks like NBC and Dick Wolf have finally cracked the case of what to do with the cast of Law Order: SVU. After a tumultuous month that saw series staples Mariska Hargitay decide to stay in a reduced role and Christopher Meloni decide to depart altogther, the network today announced it has signed former Chase star Kelli Giddish and former Cold Case regular Danny Pino to play the show’s new detectives. The announcement was made by NBC Entertainment chief Bob Greenblatt. “Kelli and Danny are two great actors who will join a proven cast headed by Mariska Hargitay as this exceptional series heads into a very promising 13th season,” Greenblatt said. Added exec producer/creator Wolf: “I’m very pleased that we have two amazing actors joining the cast. I know this combination will give us the opportunity to explore the world of SVU with new eyes.”
Pino was one of five actors to test for the role vacated by Meloni, who already has signed on to a big-time part in Warner Bros’ Superman redo Man of Steel. He played Senior Detective Scotty Valens on seven seasons of CBS’ Cold Case, and more recently guest starred on USA Network’s Burn Notice. Giddish starred on the short-lived NBC series Chase last season and has appeared in guest-star roles on both SVU and Law & Order: Criminal Intent, so she knows some of the terrain already. She presumably got the detective role that Jennifer Love-Hewitt was being courted for (though it seems no formal offer was ever made).

Fabulous choices.
They’re such barbie dolls. The antithesis of what SVU has always been. Way to go ruin another great show Dick
All together now – thank GOD no Jennifer Love Hewitt in sight. That rumor was the WORST idea ever for casting to replace Mariska.
The networks really need to get over their recent obsession with Kelli Giddish. She has headlined two terrible shows in the past two years and she is just a bit too cold to connect with audiences, in my opinion at least.
I never watched “Cold Case” before so I’ll reserve judgement on Pino.
Yeah she keeps starring on horrible shows. Idk why they picked her.
I agree with your opinion. I could never get into the idea of Chase, the female lead seemed a bit too remote.
Having her blood type “B Pos” displayed on the front of her flak jacket was ironic, she always looked like her thoughts were elsewhere.
I hope she’s better on SVU.
TOO BAD. I heard they were going to cast Ice T’s wife, COCO in the role. She would be great for the undercover work.
Photos would really have helped me with this post – I have no idea who either of these people are.
Of course, I made this comment BEFORE photos were added to the post – thanks guys.
I’m o’k with that. Good choice. Than’k God it’s not Jennifer Love Hewitt.
yuck. end of that show
SVU will not be the same without Elliott & Olivia. In my opinion they are the reason the show is so good. Pino was good on Cold Case but this is a different type of show. Will reserve judgement till i see the new show
Too young and conventionally attractive. It’s all over–just like it was for “NYPD Blue” when they kept replacing departing cast members with young model-like things.
(They weren’t all bad, just impossible to believe.)
Could not have said it better myself. This show is going to lose all credibility with this casting. Why can’t Belzer just headline this show? He’s great. Or possibly Dean Winters who has been on in the past? I believe them as NY. These two look like they just stepped out of a spa in Beverly Hills.
Belzer as a leading man? Uh…no.
With that said, I’m a big fan of SVU so I’ll give the youngins a try but I’m not terribly positive.
Although I stuck with NYPD Blue through Mark Paul Gosselar and Rick Schroeder for a couple years so maybe I’ll hang in there.
It’s still tough to see Meloni go and Mariska downshift and, to beat a dead horse, to lose L&O: L.A. which was just getting good!
They did just step out of a Beverly Hills spa. These two actors will have to be scruffed up in that special way that you only see in New York, if they are to be even remotely believable.
As a big SVU fan (and an even bigger Chris Meloni fan), SVU won’t be the same without Meloni (and Hargitay when she leaves for good), but at the same time, the show is a procedural and it can survive, at least creatively, without them.
Pino is an appealing lead and Giddish is a great actress, though unlucky having lead two freshman series that crashed and burned. Her brief stint on The Good Wife this season was terrific and she also had a somewhat brief run on All My Children a few years where she did a lot with a largely thankless character.
Ratings will be down, long time fans will complain, but I’m interested in how the show will be effected by the changes, so count me watching for a while.
*that’s AFFECTED by the changes.
While L&O:SVU is no Criminal Minds [the most misogynist show on network TV], I was never really comfortable watching it. That said, I’ll be looking forward to seeing how Ms. Giddish [who was truly wasted on Past Lives and Chase] fares on the show.
Neither of these people register for me. Munch and Fin leading the case, please!
While I would never call thee “amazing actors,” Giddish is certainly a better choice than the vapid Jennifer Love Hewitt. That said, this may get SVU a season or two but I think they will regret letting Meloni get away.
CHEAP alternatives.
NBC is leaping for joy – talent costs drop dramatically.
These two will cost less than half of one Stabler, for the next 3-4 seasons, if the old warhorse keeps chugging along.
This show won’t make it. Watch what happens to the ratings, which were falling anyways even with Stabler and Benson.
It won’t matter who got cast if the quality of the writing doesn’t improve by a degree of magnitude. The writers haven’t come up with a good new character in years. If the new detectives are as badly written as Chester Lake and long list of empty headed ADAs then 13 will be an unlucky number for SVU, Dick Wolf and NBC.
I feel bad for the new actors, because there’s a bunch of Hartigay/Meloni nut-hugging assholes that are going to criticize them no matter what they do. For the sake of the crew and new actors and their families, I hope the show makes it.
These are fabulous choices. Pino was terrific in Cold Case (which should never have been canceled, as well as Without A Trace)and Giddish was wonderful in her arc on The Good Wife (too bad she didn’t sign on with them for next season).
Sadly, RIP SVU..
I hate this. All of the Law and Orders are lousy, formulaic, plagiarized pieces of junk. I haven’t watched a show in years. Now, with Kelli Giddish in, I’ll actually have to try to watch. It will interesting to see if my attraction to Giddish can offset my extreme disinclination to watch this pap.
i give it one season before the plug is pulled altogether. SVU had a great run, though. i just wish it could’ve ended with Benson and Stabler.
Long time Stabler/Meloni fan who was planning on not watching, but now, with Giddish in, I will totally tune in. Plus, the wonderful Christopher Meloni just got another role somewhere, I think.
Next, dear Mr. Wolf, could you bring Ben Daniels back to ‘L&O UK’? Or write a new ‘L&O’ for NYC & transport him here?
Good casting, and in the end they are all replaceable. DC knows what he is doing and it will give the show a fresh look and feel.
I hope it does not get canceled I like Kelly but she has been on 2 shows and they have gotten canceled Past Life and Chase
N I miss those shows lo
I love both of them!! I was so sad when cold case was cancelled and i really liked chase too.
Puhlease w/these new cast members…it will never b the the same…it sucks!
