EXCLUSIVE: I hear Clint Eastwood is using his time with Leonardo DiCaprio on the J Edgar Hoover biopic to discuss the director’s new Warner Bros project A Star Is Born. Clint is hoping to team Leo with Beyoncé, who’s already set for the musical. Clint is producing through Malpaso as well as helming the script by Will Fetters. Producers are Billy Gerber and Basil Iwanyk and Jon Peters (who made the infamous version with Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson). The project has been at WB for several years, and there’d been talk of pairing Beyoncé and Will Smith. But casting Leo as the male lead would make for a much more interesting movie. There have been a trio of A Star Is Born versions made since the 1930s, the last one coming in 1976 with Kristofferson playing the boozer and Streisand the wannabe. Or even #4 if you consider What Price Hollywood (1932) made by George Cukor, which is often forgotten.

I agree – it’s not worth the time and effort. Clint should find another project to team up with Leo and forget about Beyonce. Remember when Etta James hated on Beyonce for singing her song… Beyonce has no grace or class to work with such prolific talents like Clint and Leo.
Although on the other hand – Dreamgirls was a success.
This is a definate risk for Clint and Leo.

Interesting perhaps, but Beyoncé needs someone with Shakespearean chops to counter her carisma. DiCaprio is good but compared to her he is slight. He would be better opposite Zelwigger or Sutton Foster. B needs someone like Clive Owen, someone whose skill and fame she could aspire to only to learn of the deep and unhealable scars he hides; someone whose little strength she unwittingly steals. Has to be an actor with many layers to develop that kind of pathos.
Leo is awesome and Beyonce is a phenomenal singer/dancer/entertainer, but her acting is cringe-worthy at best. I can’t imagine DiCaprio would do it for more than the starpower and the guarantee that she and Eastwood will sell tickets. Sighhh But I know Eastwood knows what he’s doing, so… I’ll defer. As remakes go – unavoidable, inevitable, especially with a title like this one – remaking Star is Born is not necessarily the worst idea.
But, only if you put a spin on the story, come up with some new take, not just update the casting.
Beyonce doesn’t do that. Will Smith would’ve been an even worse idea. And Leo is worse that Will.
I would never bet against Clint, but this one has “misguided” written all over it. And it’s not like he’s infallible: I just saw Hereafter for the first time. Yikes, what a bore.
I think Leo would bring passion to the film… He is basically playing an actor, who doesn’t sing or dance, but help this unknown actress get her feet in the door; whom he marries. Leo role becomes a very disturbed, drunken, sick man that doesn’t know how to handle his wife success. He can do the part, Will Smith…I agree, I don’t think so…
This would be amazing! I’m so happy it is confirmed that the movie is in fact being done. Read an article about Beyonce juggling learning her lines with everything else she has going on. She seems really excited. I’m interested in seeing how it turns out. If Leo signs on I would be in heaven!

I don’t mind the interracial angle, but I agree with a previous poster that Clive Owen would be more interesting in this part when matched with Beyonce.
Why is Will Smith the only black actor mentioned? There are tons out there, and people would be uncomfortable with Smith doing such an intense depressing part.

As for Beyonce,her role as Diana Ross in Dreamgirls was superb — if you knew anything about “call me Ms. Ross and all her idiosyncrecies — Beyonoce had it DOWN PACK — RIGHT ON CUE!!!!!!! Jennifer’s acting was good also, but her character had quite a lot to do with her getting the award — everyone roots for the down-trodden. Beyonce’s transformation into to “call me Ms. Ross was spectacular without a doubt!!! She will be spectacular in this role!!! What about that African male actor who starred with her in Obsession?! This is….odd. I hope Warner Bros embraces the oddness, dumps Clint, and gets David Lynch to direct.
This is a movie that will get made every 25 years or so. New audience, new music, new actors. Beyonce is a good choice – I think. While she hasn’t shown genius acting chops she hasn’t sucked either and she’s very likeable for a megastar. And surely there are few pop performers who have the voice, beauty and entertainment ability as she – the girl was born to be on stage. As for Leo, that’s a very strange choice. I would have thought Russel Crowe or Kevin Bacon – both musicians themselves and both significantly older and more mature than Beyonce. But I’m sure Mr. Eastwood knows what he’s doing.
Respect and admire Clint Eastwood as a director, actor, producer and musician…and, I respect his well earned right to do any films he wishes.
That being said, another “A Star is Born” will not be an exclamation point on a great career…but, it’s up to Clint…so be it.

She was okay in Cadillac Records. Nothing spectacular, though I think praise for her performance was due to her not completely sucking. But maybe Clint can draw a good performance from her. Like another poster said, I defer. He knows what he’s doing far better than most.
