EXCLUSIVE: Talks are about to get underway for Leonardo DiCaprio to play the role of villainous ranch owner Calvin Candie in Django Unchained, the Sergio Leone-style spaghetti Western that Quentin Tarantino wrote and will direct as his next film. DiCaprio is being courted to play a charming but ruthless proprietor of Candyland, a despicable club and plantation in Mississippi where female slaves are exploited as sex objects and males are pitted against each other in “mandingo” style death matches. Candie is a slave’s worst nightmare and the freed slave Django must cross him in order to reclaim his wife.
Now, deal making discussions are just getting underway, but I’m told there is a much higher likelihood of DiCaprio taking part in the film at this point than Will Smith, who had been reported as lead candidate to play the title role of DJango, a slave who is liberated and taught the tricks of the trade by a German dentist-turned-bounty hunter. That role is expected to be played by Christoph Waltz, who won an Oscar playing Hans Landa in Tarantino’s last film, Inglourious Basterds. Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction star Samuel L. Jackson is also expected to play the role of Stephen, Candie’s valet who keeps the slaves in line at Candie’s residence. Tarantino turned in his script in late April to The Weinstein Company’s Harvey Weinstein, and Sony Pictures signed on shortly after to distribute in offshore territories.
The courtship of Smith for the role of Django has gone on for so long that I’m persuaded it has become a long shot. At this point, I’ve heard alternative names that include Idris Elba, Jamie Foxx and Chris Tucker. The latter is a surprise because he hasn’t starred in a movie since 2007′s Rush Hour 3, but he showed some serious dramatic chops playing a memorable small role in Tarantino’s J
ackie Brown.
The emergence of DiCaprio as the film’s main villain is intriguing. Candie in some ways is comparable to the polished but loathsome Landa in Inglorious Basterds. That role intrigued DiCaprio in the formative stages when Tarantino was just formulating a cast. It didn’t come together and Tarantino decided he wanted an actor who could speak German as well as other languages. Waltz proved a glove fit for that role and it was impossible to read Django Unchained and not see Waltz in the role of Dr. Schultze. Candie is every bit as colorful and ruthless a villain as Landa was. DiCaprio next stars as FBI director J Edgar Hoover in the Clint Eastwood-directed J Edgar. Django Unchained is being produced by Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction producer Stacey Sher, along with Pilar Savone.

Omar from The Wire is the only choice. Jaime Foxx? God no.
Yes that is a perfect choice. Omar will rock that. Will smith idk. Tucker? Heck no. Elba? Ehhhhh. Maybe a Michael Ealy.
God, that would amazing. Mike K. is the perfect, perfect choice. He would rock that role so hard…
Michael K. Williams for sure!!!!! How do you not give this brother more roles in Hollywood? Look at him in Boardwalk Empire……the black MIchael Douglas
Why not go to Sam Jackson? He’ll put butts in seats. Leo has yet to go head to head against him and I’d pay money to see it happen.
God this sounds CRAZY!… In the best way. Idris Alba PLEASE! That is one yummy piece of chocolate.
The issue with Elba is that the guy is so physically intimidating he cannot blend into a crowd. When he is on screen, its impossible not to feel him as a threat. Django needs to blend in on some level. He needs to appear to not be a threat and then surprise people with his ability. He also needs to be able to grow significantly in the second act from “just another slave” to a hunter.
IT’S CALLED “ACTING”!
Idris Elba is the only choice, and will be superb.
That’s just leftover Stringer memories talking.
I would so much rather Idris Elba in that role than Smith (or any of the others mentioned, though Chris Tucker is intriguing). Please make it so.
Michael Jai White from Black Dynomite might also be an interesting choice. Tucker’s voice is a bit too high to really work, no matter how good he was in Jackie Brown. Elba is the best choice overall.
If you did basic research you’d know that Leo’s grandmother was German and he is fluent. Therefore, language was not a factor in him not being cast as Landa.
If you’d done a lick of research you’d know Leo can speak very minimal German, only a few words.

Leo’s mother is German, but he would be the first to tell you he is not fluent in German. I’m sure he could learn one language he’s familiar with for a role, but all the other languages… probably not.
Leo aint fluent in German but I’m sure he could be if he really wanted to
Michael k Williams should play django. Only guy who fits.
Yes, Michael K. Williams would be fabulous, and dare I say preferable to Idris Elba.
If Will Smith doesn’t do this, they need a face to open this film and they can do it with Leo. But he doesn’t fit the part and it would be really great if they get this roll right. It needs to be someone who you believe is able to create, control, and maintain an evil empire deep in the south during slavery. Leo is too young, too pretty, and not “country” enough.
Johnny Depp is from Kentucky. I reckon he would be exceptional. His accent in Public Enemies and The Astronaut’s Wife was good.
Fucking A — this is what I’m talking about!
Btw Will Smith would be good for the BO, but Jamie Foxx is PERFECT for this damn role!
Re-reading script with this cast in mind!
Forget Will Smith! I hope that Tarantino casts Idris Elba as Django.smith has a habit of playing it safe.i don’t think he wants his squeaky clean image being tarnished and besides he proably wanted his kids to have roles in the film and come on board as a producer which did’nt sit well with Quentin.
Whoah…
I read the script, although I’m not sure DiCaprio is the right choice for Candie. I know that Will Smith is NOT right for Django. I would rather see Idris Elba. But Anthony Mackie should be given some consideration as well.
I love Anthony Mackie, but he’s got about 4 films lined up, plus he’s a theater guy and I wouldn’t be surprised if he has something going on there as well. I think he’s just too busy.
If DiCaprio signs up it won’t matter if Smith does as well. Elba would be a great candidate for the role of Django. Will Smith will never throw away that superstar marketability.
I’m glad you just started listing off all the characters and their motivations. I love watching a movie for the first time and not being surprised whatsoever by the plot!!!
Two words for the role of Django: Tyler Perry. Think about it!
Oh yeah! He’s just a wall of black masculinity!
I’d like Idris Elba for the gig, but the idea of Chris Tucker is crazy enough to work. If anyone can pull that off, it’d be QT.
OMAR FROM THE WIRE!!!!!!
Can’t believe Spike Lee hasn’t said a thing about this script. He hates Tarantino with a passion and with the language and scenes depicted in this film…it’s gonna be all-out war between them. Mark my words.
I was already iffy about Tarantino doing a film with slaves; but then you brought up Spike. Yeah, that’ll be the fight to watch!
I read it. The language is horrendous. No excuse for using the n word in descriptions.
Overall, I found it quite tasteless.
True dat.
AND SPEAKING OF WORDS—– what is the over under on how many times “n****r” is uttered in all forms and variations?
Spike Lee, aside from the fact that this is the kind of material he should be doing, is going to blow a gasket from here to Hoboken!
That’s entertainment.
I’m from MS and I cringe whenever anyone says the n-word. I personally think that Tarantino is bringing the word back to its roots and showing just how despicable it really is.
who cares what spike lee thinks
I read the script. It’s solid Tarantino. Django isn’t the most interesting role. This is Schultze’s movie. Can’t imagine anyone but Waltz. But please, no to Smith and Foxx, big yes to Mackie.
Finally ! A role where DiCaprio can make use of his creepily high-pitched boy voice.
Chris Tucker… ugh. Please no. He can play Djingo’s sidekick.
OMAR (Michael K Williams) would be amazing! Although his souther accent in Boardwalk Empire wasn’t the best.
I dunno about that. . .it can’t get anymore authentic. I believe his roots are from North or South Carolina.
YES! To Samuel Jackson/Leo.
Candyland is not the club Candie owns. It’s the plantation. The club is, I believe, called Club Cleopatra.
(And Anthony Mackie should be Django.)
Mackie was really good in The Hurt Locker. It’s hard to cast when you haven’t read the script. I am not letting myself read it, I won’t rob myself of the theatre experience. If he is supposed to become great hunter, then both Elba and White would have to lose a considerable amount of muscle mass, as would Smith.
Smith, Fox, and Chris Tucker feel like a different movie. How bout a real African like Chewitel? Or a cool up-and-commer like Common?
Ejiofor is British. His parents were from Africa, yes, but I’m fairly sure he was born and raised in London. You can disagree about his nationality, but “real African” seems a stretch.
Having just read the script (if it’s really the real script – it felt very sloppy at times, which I’m not used in Tarantino’s writung. Indulgent yes, sloppy no), the movie with this screenplay can only really work if you pit two superstars against each other. Smith would work perfectly. But Foxx and Tucker are good choices, as well. Perry? Interesting (he wouldn’t do it, though). As much as Elba or Mackie would be fantastic acting wise, it really has to be a meeting of the giants. Di Caprio vs. Smith? Spot on. If Eddie Murphy were 20 years younger, he’d be the best Django.
Sloppy? It was no different than Basterds script in that regard. And it was too fantastic to be a fake.
As for needing a superstar: The journey of Django is from beaten down young man to hero. He is someone who BECOMES great. Which is why an up and comer like Mackie would be better suited than someone like Smith.
Besides, the focus of the film is not Django vs. Candie anyway. Candie is more of Schultz’s nemesis.
