EXCLUSIVE: Talks are about to get underway for Leonardo DiCaprio to play the role of villainous ranch owner Calvin Candie in Django Unchained, the Sergio Leone-style spaghetti Western that Quentin Tarantino wrote and will direct as his next film. DiCaprio is being courted to play a charming but ruthless proprietor of Candyland, a despicable club and plantation in Mississippi where female slaves are exploited as sex objects and males are pitted against each other in “mandingo” style death matches. Candie is a slave’s worst nightmare and the freed slave Django must cross him in order to reclaim his wife.
Now, deal making discussions are just getting underway, but I’m told there is a much higher likelihood of DiCaprio taking part in the film at this point than Will Smith, who had been reported as lead candidate to play the title role of DJango, a slave who is liberated and taught the tricks of the trade by a German dentist-turned-bounty hunter. That role is expected to be played by Christoph Waltz, who won an Oscar playing Hans Landa in Tarantino’s last film, Inglourious Basterds. Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction star Samuel L. Jackson is also expected to play the role of Stephen, Candie’s valet who keeps the slaves in line at Candie’s residence. Tarantino turned in his script in late April to The Weinstein Company’s Harvey Weinstein, and Sony Pictures signed on shortly after to distribute in offshore territories.
The courtship of Smith for the role of Django has gone on for so long that I’m persuaded it has become a long shot. At this point, I’ve heard alternative names that include Idris Elba, Jamie Foxx and Chris Tucker. The latter is a surprise because he hasn’t starred in a movie since 2007′s Rush Hour 3, but he showed some serious dramatic chops playing a memorable small role in Tarantino’s J
ackie Brown.
The emergence of DiCaprio as the film’s main villain is intriguing. Candie in some ways is comparable to the polished but loathsome Landa in Inglorious Basterds. That role intrigued DiCaprio in the formative stages when Tarantino was just formulating a cast. It didn’t come together and Tarantino decided he wanted an actor who could speak German as well as other languages. Waltz proved a glove fit for that role and it was impossible to read Django Unchained and not see Waltz in the role of Dr. Schultze. Candie is every bit as colorful and ruthless a villain as Landa was. DiCaprio next stars as FBI director J Edgar Hoover in the Clint Eastwood-directed J Edgar. Django Unchained is being produced by Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction producer Stacey Sher, along with Pilar Savone.

should be michael jai white, or maybe common, think bout it
I like Common as a person/musician but I’ve never seen him act well. He might have potential, I haven’t seen all his work, but I’d wager he can’t play the lead in a film yet, at least one that isn’t a bad romcom or action flick.
check out the new AMC show Hell On Wheels. Common is really good.
Just said that above, Black Dynamite baby!
2012,
Re: Spike Lee’s hating on Tarantino.
“It’s gonna be all-out war between them. Mark my words.”
Mark MY words. Spike Lee don’t figure in this.
How long is Leo going to be in Sydney though?
Idris is alllll over the the place. Something fresh like Adewale Agbaje? Mr Eko from Lost!!
If Tarantino is so hell-bent to do a 1970s exploitaton-spaghetti western, I would have a lot more respect if he found a way to do it on a ’70s budget.
Good for him. He needs this bad. He needs to get back to his character actor roots. I maybe in the minority on this but in my opinion he hasn’t turned in a solid performance since Gilbert Grape(I’ll give him the Departed). Tarantino is gonna be on his ass every step of the way and not settle for his usual lazy movie star ticks.
You’re not alone. He will never give a performance as rich and unrecognizable as Arnie Grape. He’s had moments with The Departed and Shutter Island (even if that film’s twist could be seen a mile away) but he cannot disappear into a role like some of his other current leading actor contemporaries (Bale, Gosling, Bardem, Levitt, I could name more).
Leo seemed to go into ‘I want to be respected again by working with big time directors and win Oscars’ phase since Catch Me if You Can (last role that I thought he had some real fun with). I would love for him to take a risk once in a while and Quentin Tarantino, while predictably offbeat and a real actor’s director, Leo as a villain has my approval. I get so tired of the ‘hero’ roles he assumes, even the wishy-washy kind like Cobb in Inception.
For the slave role, Anthony Mackie, Michael Jai White, and Michael K. Williams are definitely the actors I would consider if Smith (likely) drops out. Not stars but Brad Pitt was the headliner for Inglorious Basterds even a lot of ‘unknowns’ (loose term) got more to work with than him in the film (Waltz, Fassbender, Laurent, Kruger).
Please, please cast Chippy D, aka Montana Fishbourne.
Omg I hope its a prequel to the quick and the dead!
Michael K Williams all the way!! He could really pull this off. Big Time. Someone needs to give this fab actor his big break, he really deserves it!!
Samuel L Jackson wont play Django — if anything hes perfect for the role of Stephen. But I don’t know if he’s got enough screentime to warrant the kind of $$$ it would cost to put him in that role.
It needs to be Nate Parker or Chiwetal, Seriously…
yea
Nate Parker or Chiwetal need to be up for this role, they would be epic
Here’s an idea, how about Vin Diesel for Django? I’d love to see Diesel and Leo go at it.
I can see Idris, Omar and White. Even Common.
I’d like to see an unknown. Especially going up against Leo.
Thank God for Samuel being in there.
There’s no way an established black star does this film. The script is the most racist piece of white boy rape fantasy I’ve ever read. This idiot thinks Mandingo was historically accurate. No self respecting black man will go near it. There was never a chance Will Smith did this movie.
You must have forgotten about Halle Berry in Monster’s Ball. If that wasn’t a “racist white boy rape fantasy” film I don’t know what is.
Michael K. Williams definitely has more range and is way more believable then Idras Elba!!! Really??
OMAR COMMIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think the role of Django would be excellent for the guy that played Anamais in Spartacus Blood and Sand…..not sure what his name is but I think the guy would be excellent in the role..
i kind of want to see one of the actors from wire play the lead role mostly because it would be a good fit for one of them
