EXCLUSIVE: In its latest attempt to hatch a large-scale film that can play to a family audience, Disney has made a seven-figure deal with screenwriter and Lost exec producer Damon Lindelof to write and produce an original large-scale science fiction feature film. Other than the fact that the project has a working title of 1952, I couldn’t pry plot details out of anybody. I’m not sure if the title connotes a period the film is set in, or if it is a Lost reference. I’ve also heard that this project isn’t just being conceived for movies only, but that it has multiple platform aspirations.
The project came out of a series of meetings that Lindelof had with Disney’s production president Sean Bailey and senior exec Brigham Taylor, and it’s the first film that Lindelof is producing from the ground up. Since ending the run of Lost and serving as one of the show’s architects all the way through, Lindelof has been on fire as a screenwriter. He teamed with Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci to script the Jon Favreau-directed Cowboys & Aliens. Lindelof came aboard to rewrite Ridley Scott’s 3D Alien prequel and injected enough new ideas into the Prometheus script for Fox and Scott to deem the film an original. Lindelof is right now working with Kurtzman and Orci to pull together a Star Trek sequel that can be ready to begin production later this year or early next. I’ve reported my skepticism that Abrams would ever be able to move from launching Super 8 and jump into a Star Trek sequel that will make its summer 2012 release date, because the scribes need Abrams to give a thumbs up to the 70-page story outline they’ve written, and turn that into a script. Orci noted this in a Twitter message sent as he was heading to watch Super 8: @TrekMovie since JJ has seen super 8, maybe I can get him to read trek during the movie;). Lindelof will be engaged in that for a while, and he will start the Disney project after that. Lindelof’s deal was made by CAA.

Damon is one of writing heroes! It’s his work on Lost really inspired me to switch gears from solely writing features to writing for television.
Love this guy!
He’s a helluva writer and an awesome guy. Not changed by his good fortune and truly loves story telling. I’m happy for all his success.
hopefully he’ll figure out how to end the movie and not just wing it.
@LostFaith
Hahah. So true. Absolutely loved LOST until final season. Hope this doesn’t turn into a PG vehicle for kiddys as Disney is prone to do. Still have faith since Lindeloff is involved.
BTW, anyone follow him on Twitter? Dude is pretty damn funny
Lost wasn’t just L’s fault… blame the studio/network and the rest of the writing staff for allowing themselves to “wing it” for six seasons.
Sweet necklace bro.
Is that made out of little candies? Yum.
Those are like, uh, pooka shells, dude.
Rock it out PG w/ no cursing and make an extra $5OM from family box office and DVD! Loved all LOST!
This is fantastic news!
He owes me seven figures for that LOST ending.
I need to make fun of this guy so I feel better about myself, but I loved Lost. Even the ending. Totally loved it. Damn.
Yeah, I love LOST too. Nothing can change that. But they sure did it awful injustice with that ridiculously, over-stuffed storyline. Ugh. Everyone – the actors, the story and indeed fans – deserved better. Major suckage. Still I know if they could have done better they would have. They panicked and choked. I’d love to see a do-over though! Can you imagine a 3 hour film that takes on season 6…Gives me chills.
Couldn’t happen to a nastier person. Ask anyone who worked at LOST — Damon treated his writers like crap, constantly abusing them. Insecure, vain, napoleon syndrome.
Ok since you suggest it is possible to ‘ask anyone who worked at Lost” maybe you could ask Kitsis and Horowitz why Lindelof will be a consulting producer on THEIR new show if he was so horrible to them. No doubt you will tell us it is simply for business reasons or some such thing so you can maintain the pretext of your unproven, unsupported allegations.
Da truth is really on point. There was constant berating, and it truly was an awful work environment. But you got to understand these were the nerds in high school who stayed inside and played Dungeons and Dragons. They wore puka shell necklaces, khaki pants with elastic waist bands, and were virgins well into their 20s. Only now they’re receiving fame and notoriety and making everyone pay for the flak they took. He was just really mean and had such a God complex.
the secret is that it’s going to suck dick just like seasons 2-6 of LOST did.
LULZ…. Ah, haterade. Tastes so good sometimes.
On November 1, 1952, the United States detonated the first hydrogen bomb at Eniwetok Atoll in the Marshall Islands in the central Pacific Ocean, with a yield of 10.4 megatons. On November 4 an 8.25 Richter scale earthquake hit the Kamchatka Peninsula of the Soviet Union, a megathrust earthquake and causing a major tsunami.
Other interesting things happened in 1952, but this coincidental pair of events come to mind instantly when one thinks of a “Lost” type plot.
1952 was also the year the CIA convened the Robertson Panel to study the recent flap of UFO reports and develop a public relations strategy. The panel concluded about 10 percent of UFO reports were inexplicable. To manage and deflect public interest, it recommended a debunk-and-ridicule strategy that continues in muted form to this day. Some suggest a secret, “freelance” government took form in 1952 to cope with the UFO phenomenon and never quit.
This seems like the sort of thing that would interest Lindelof.
I see more Disney layoffs in the future due to bad investments
damon lindelof deserves all the good fortune that comes his way. he is a true visionary with an authentic and original voice. his work ethic, his devotion to his craft and his family are something to which we should all aspire. happy for him. impressed by him. hate him a little ’cause he’s so fucking good!
Lindelof always finds a fresh way in. His mind is brilliant. I still believe that he is just coming into his own. There are only a handful of creators with this much talent. Cannot wait to see more of what he creates. And above all else he is a super nice caring, gentleman.
I’m happy to see Damon doing something like this. The man is amazing, and he (and Carlton and the team) created a very large saga that’s both magnificent and frustrating. Personally, Season 6 of LOST is my favorite. Brilliant writer.
Area 51/UFO sightings nonsense began in 1951. Maybe the movie is going to be about what happened next? Eisenhower was elected in 1952. Aliens in the White House in the 50s? Queen Elizabeth II ascended to the thrown in 1952. Nah, too Torchwood.
According to Wikipedia on July 19th-26th 1952:
Washington D.C. is “buzzed” by several UFO’s tracked on multiple radars. Militaary jets scramble on several occasions and the objects take evasive action only to return after the jets leave the area.
Better be as successful as DL if you’re gonna rock the pooka shell necklace in your PR pic. Hang loose, bra…
Yeah, how can you not be a fan of his work? He has a beautiful mind. Whenever I used to watch him talking about Lost with Carlton I always thought he was such a geek, and he is. But he’s still cool as hell. He loves what he does, and that’s why he works so hard to perfect it.
Damon and Jesse Stern are my two favourite screenwriters. I just love their work. When Lost first started I didn’t believe it was from the same people who creaed Nash Bridges. Two completely, yet awesome, genres.
Wow, some hate coming DL’s way. How can you knock this guy as a writer? he orchestrated the most ambitious storyline in television history… and pulled it off! Whether he made it up on the fly (he didn’t)or not, his brilliance is still proven! Who could possibly write a show as good as lost on the fly? Or could possibly formulate a 6-year script as good as lost? Excellent character development, ambitious plot development. Perfect resolution to story and character, LEAVE DAMON ALONE, AND TRY TO WRITE
SOMETHING BETTER THAN HIM!
I loved every minute working at LOST – it could be tedious, like all rooms, but it was also a fucking dream. Damon is insanely brilliant, works his ass off, and is HUMAN – despite his superhuman imagination and work ethic. If you have complaints, then you don’t know what the hell you are talking about or mistakenly thought it was your show, not Damon’s.
