Lovely book — small, sweet, charming. Move over, 84 CHARING CROSS ROAD…another gem is on the way!
Jim Broadbent, meet Shohreh Aghdashloo…Jim,Shohreh; Shohreh, Jim.
Tom Wilkinson, meet Rekha….Tom, Rekha; Rekha, Tom.
Either way, with any combination above, there you have it, folks. See you on the set:)
Rekha – hands down! Con’t wait for the movie!
I’d love to see Colin Firth and Sarita Choudhury. That’s a sexy pair.
I am so happy that someone is planning on making a film version of this wonderful story Hope they keep the same title so that I will be able to locate it among the many films that are and will be out there. I loved the book.
Michael Caine as Major Pettigrew.
Yes! Michael Caine!
Colin Firth is way too young. I would cast Ciarin Hinds…
James Cromwell is the Major
Colin Firth is too young; even Ciarin Hinds is a bit too young – he’s 58, while the Major’s character is 68. Best choice would be Alan Rickman – right age, right build, would do a great job in this role!
Rekha? Rekha! Ohhh, wonderful! I hope so!
Bill Nighy would be great for portraying the Major P’s dry, sometimes acerbic wit.
Morris. You are right. Bill has the versatility as an actor and the charm and humour to carry the role.
I think Ciaran Hinds would be wonderful in this role. He has played military types before and does them well.
I love Alan Rickman but can’t see him as a retired military officer.
Alan Rickman was a retired military officer in Sense and Sensibility. Might work.
Take a long look at Jim Carter for the Major. He’s the only person I imagined in the role as I was reading the book.
The only choice for the Major is Bill Nighy.
Bill Nighy is the ONLY choice for this role.
I think David Robb from Downtom Abbey would be the PERFECT Majot Pettigrew
Shabana Azmi is who I had in mind while reading . Please don’t cast Anthony Hopkins.Alan Rickman could do very nicely.
Just found this website so am jumping back to last year to say I agree with the suggestion that Michael Caine play the Major. Ciarin Hinds could be good but Michael Caine has a more rumpled look which I think would fit to the endearing image I have of the Major. If Madhur Joffrey is still acting (although she is more of a stage actor, great as “Medea”!, also with her own cooking show and several cookbooks)she might be perfect as Mrs. Ali.
I saw Michael Kitchen as the Major.
Bill Nighy, definitely. He’d be able to convey just the right combination of formality, tenderness, humor and gentle awkwardness that is Major Pettigrew. He would inhabit the character so interestingly. I hope he is offered the role!
Anthony Hopkins. Done.
Gary Oldman……coming off as “Smiley”…..and why not put Benedict Cumberbatch in as his son….they worked well together…
Derek Jacobi would be perfect or Patrick Stewart.
Gary Oldman is too young – Derek Jacobi is too formal – Carol’s right – there’s a very complex mix of vulnerability and awkwardness in the Major’s character that Bill Nighy would play well. I still vote for Alan Rickman – he could pull off that blend of vulnerability and formality, and the dry humor.
Anthony Hopkins?!
I cannot wait !When will this movie be released ? Such a delightful read _with such a wide range of emtions. !
