UPDATE: Disney has set a July 26, 2013 release date for Thor 2.
EARLIER EXCLUSIVE: Marvel Studios, which is in production on the Joss Whedon-directed The Avengers, is making a full commitment to Thor 2, with Chris Hemsworth reprising his role as the title hero. Marvel will need to hire a director for that film because, I’ve learned, Kenneth Branagh won’t be returning as helmer. Branagh, who directed the first film and watched it gross $437 million worldwide with a few territories still playing out, will likely be involved in some producing capacity. His exit was “mutual and amicable,” I’m told. That means a big job is out there that a lot of directors and their agents will be chasing over the upcoming holiday.
Disney will today finalize a release date for Thor 2, which will be released sometime in the summer, 2013. Disney and Marvel have already slotted the Robert Downey Jr-starrer Iron Man 3 to open May 3, 2013. So figure that Thor 2 will come later in the summer. Developing…

This is incredibly disappointing.
This is good news! The first film failed to meet my expectations.
Let Joss Whedon write and direct Thor 2.
No, keep Joss Whedon as far from this franchise as possible. It’s bad enough he’s got his hands on The Avengers.
Sure, because Iron Man 2 and Thor were SOOOOOOOOOO well written and directed by their makers.
You must be the only person with a heartbeat that did not like what Joss whedon did with the Avengers
+1
I was also surprised how entertaining the first one was.
How about we wait and see if the Avengers turns out well before handing Whedon the keys to everything. Fanboys… jeez…
Maybe “Thor 2″ will feature some action sequences this time?
Thank you! I mean come on have more than two action sequences in a movie about a superhero. Iron Man had at least four. And while we’re talking about it I would just like to say that I think it would be so cool for Agent Coulson to be the Vision all along. Although I think they’ll most likely have his conciousness transferred into the Vision’s body in a Avengers sequal. Also I think in Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man he should have Hank Pym as the Ant Man then have Wasp be a supporting character from the start but become the Wasp in the final battle; and then have Scott Lang take over the Ant-Man helm so that Hank Pym can be Giant Man in the Avengers sequal.
I hope they find someone significant to direct. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed Thor.
There were a lot of problems with the first.
I was surprised by how much I liked this movie, but yes the sequel needs more action.
Chris Hemsworth did a great job and seems like a pretty nice guy, so good for him.
The good thing is that since it will be a sequel there should most definitely be a lot more action since we don’t need all of the exposition we got in the first film.
I know that I’m ready to watch Thor kick some serious ass.
need a better script… script for first was crap
There was a script???
I think Alex Proyas would be perfect
Top of my wish list to direct Thor 2, Ridley Scott.
Good! In spite of some narrative issues, I thought THOR was terrific — and will end up being this year’s highest grossing super-hero movie most likely when all is said and done.
Disappointed Branagh isn’t coming back, but you wonder if his inexperience with this type of picture caused some issues behind the scenes?
Either way, Hemsworth was fine. The film was big, colorful, entertaining and fun…something to build on for another one!
I thought the first was horrible. Like almost a saturday night live skit. It was almost like a spoof. McGruber was more believable in tone.
i think u confused this w/greenlantern bro
i don’t get the hate. I loved Thor, and thought it was one of the best Marvel movies so far. The effects were beautiful, and it was a fun script. The sequel might be better though, since it won’t be an origin story.
Looking forward to Thor 2! I really enjoyed the first one and thought Chris was great with the character. Thanks for sharing the great news!!
I loved Thor! Saw it 3 times! I wish Ken was back for Thor 2 but I’m still watching for Chris and Tom. They did a great job.
I hope they get someone interesting to
direct like Rob Cohen
or Paul W.S. Anderson
WHAT!!!???You want Paul”I am purposely f**king up Resident Evil”W.S. Anderson on board for Thor2??WTF is wrong with you??I would rather have someone who has directing talent!Like Spielberg take control of the next one!
I think a good director for the sequel once Kranagh is out is Alfonso Cuarón. He already knows the hardwork of a Franchise after Harry Potter.
I really like Thor besides a few plotholes and a sequel (with a better release date) will be very welcome.
When will superhero movies go the way of disco? My five-year-old is already burnt out on them; so when does it end officially?
Super heros movies will NEVER DIE!!NEVER!!
Can we actually see Thor wear his helmet IN ACTION this time? And FLY? And maybe, I dunno, MAKE A THUNDERSTORM? Y’know, with wind and stuff. Thanks in advance.
I also really enjoyed Thor, went in with low expectations and was pleasantly surprised. I credit a lot of it to Branagh, so I’m disappointed he won’t be back. Marvel has made some interesting hires, though. We’ll see.
Too bad Branagh left. While the first one had a lot of problems, most of that came from Marvel’s generic screenplay. Branagh managed to bring some dramatic heft to the mythological stuff and a slew of charm and wit to everything else. In lesser hands, the movie could have been as bland boring as Marvel’s last Hulk movie and Iron Man 2. Here’s hoping they get a director who can prevent that.
Too soon.
The comic book Thor was noble. The movie Thor was a frat boy.
The comic book Odin was all-powerful. The movie Thor was Oprah (“I’m already proud of you.”)
typo: The movie ODIN was Oprah.
As long as we get some Thor/Loki all will be good
Marvel/Disney needs to quit being so cheap and pay people. Branagh did a great job, bring him back.
