EXCLUSIVE: MTV will not be going with a second season of its racy teen drama Skins. The news is not particularly surprising as it’s been almost three months since the series ended its freshman run. “Skins is a global television phenomenon that, unfortunately, didn’t connect with a US audience as much as we had hoped,” MTV said in a statement. “We admire the work that the series’ creator Bryan Elsley did in adapting the show for MTV, and appreciate the core audience that embraced it.”
Skins, an adaptation of the praised British series, became one of MTV’s most talked-about shows ever when TV watchdog the Parents Television Council characterized it as possibly “the most dangerous television show for children that we have ever seen.” It called on the Feds to open an investigation for possible child pornography and exploitation on the show, which, in keeping with the British original, employed (often underage) teen actors to play the characters of the same age. That led to a number of advertisers pulling from the show, but MTV stuck with it and aired the entire first season with small editing of the more explicit content. Ratings-wise, Skins was solid while not spectacular. It opened with 3.3 million viewers for its premiere, which followed Jersey Shore, dropping half of it in its second episode. After several weeks of declines, the show’s numbers picked up toward the end of its freshman run, which wrapped with 1.2 million viewers for the finale. Skins’ ratings are comparable with those for MTV’s other scripted series, The Hard Times Of RJ Berger, which is back for a second season, and recent entry Teen Wolf. However, because of it MA rating, Skins could not be repeated throughout MTV’s schedule like the other shows, putting more pressure on the premiere telecast to perform very well so the network can get enough bang for its buck. In addition to Teen Wolf, MTV has six more new scripted series in the pipeline to launch in the next year.

MTV just can’t do scripted. They never have been able to and doubt that they’ll ever be able to at least with the current regime who is just too out of touch with what MTV’s demo would watch.
They used to do great scripted shows back in the day. “Dead at 21″ was awesome, and way ahead of it’s time both in tone and structure.
Agreed. Still wishing they made that “Dead at 21″ movie. Would love to see MTV move into something like that (i.e. mystery thriller genre).
Agree completely re: DA21.
Way ahead of its time, although I don’t know if the network (or audiences) would even know what to do with that show today.
At the very least, it goes to show you that there WAS a time when MTV employed young, forward-thinking creative types who weren’t chasing pop culture trends.
Even the coke-induced weirdfests like The Maxx and The Head were wholly watchable even if they didn’t stick around for very long.
Excuse me, MTV can do scripted. The Hard Times of RJ Berger is hilarious.
Well, that’s because the US version is, well, God-awful.
MTV should have saved its money and just re-run the UK versions (which are brilliant).
Completely agree
Totally agree. The UK reruns that were on BBC America were much better in terms of casting, acting, and plotting. You beleived you were watching slices of life in that show rather than a filmed Dolce & Gabbana ad.
thank god, it was just a terrible version of the UK series.
“Skins is a global television phenomenon”
Uh, no, the UK original was a global television phenomenon. Your version was a shoddy second rate imitation that never should have made it as far as the pilot stage.
When are they going to cancel Teen Wolf?
I was obsessed with US Skins
figured Mtv would not give its version of skins another season mostly due to all the controversy the first season caused them with watch groups. not to mention not being able to rerun episodes and let fans maybe catch up. as for them running the original british version mtv would have wound up having to cut and censor some of the material and proably have run into the same controversy with the young actors as they did with their version.
Nobody’s canceling a show because of “too much controversy”. Unless the advertisers start pulling out.
I loved it and I’m sad its not coming back
Casting for Skins USA was absolute garbage. The guy who played Tony was such a dork and girl who played Effy was too quirky. Kaya Scodelario is captivating..!! She alone captured an audience for 4 seasons.
Regardless…The UK version of Skins didnt really get good until season 3 when they brought in a new cast. If MTV was smart they would have started the US version with a season 3 storyline. Cook, Freddie, Panda, JJ, Effy….Amazing characters..!!!
Did you really just say that Skins didn’t get good until season three? Just goes to show you that there’s no accounting for taste.
I am finally into Season 3 Ep 6 and I still can’t feel the need to watch like I felt for Season 1 and 2. There is no raw emotion with the new lot. Keeping my fingers crossed tho.
I agree that they should just run the original, with some subitles if necessary.
Maybe MTV’s audience will be savvy enough to appreciate it.
Sadly the US version was much paler than the UK version. Though all the drugs & sex remained, it lost it’s plucky humor in the transition across the Pond.
Lipstone @ ICM reps Company Pictures. CAA reps the creator Bryan Elsley. They are moving the show to another network. Stay tuned…
MTV should not have been the network to touch this. I know it is a teen show but I wish AMC/Showtime/HBO bought rights to this. It still could have been in the same vein without the feeling it got censored and made toothless. For the most part, terrible casting and choices of location for a US Skins show. It felt nothing like the original that while not perfect at least felt raw and interesting.
The thing that stood in the way of MTV’s “Skins” was MTV.
The MTV suits are middle-aged, no talents desperately clutching at wisps of trends to keep themselves in mortgage payments. The tragedy remains: most of the MTVers attempting to make TV for Teens & Young Adults were the nerds who were left home Friday and Saturday night. That’s why you get out-of-touch crap with wildly mixed tastes and messaging. Silent Library? All those Rob Dyrdek infomercials. Not a writer or producer in the bunch with story chops or insights to deliver scripted.
Stick to the alcohol & vomit soaked reality shows and infomercials for recording artists. And bring back Beach House.
MTV has always been softcore-porn with a soundtrack. Just don’t get uppity and try to go hard-core. The audience, critics and advertisers will bite back.
Next!
Cancel all the BS shows on this network and go back to music videos. Don’t forget where you came from.
Yeah, because music video shows REALLY bring in the ratings…
The Brit version was great. MTV made a piece of crap
The US version sucked anyways… It could never be great as the UK one..
I’m sure the Parents Television Council is taking all the credit for this, whether they deserve it or not (mostly not).

ya know, when the PTC first blasted this show everyone was on this messageboard PRAISING THIS SHOW. falling over each other on who could praise the show more and who could insult the PTC more. yet the show had only been on one or 2 episodes. also EVERYONE stated that due to the controversy the show WOULD BE A HIT. and that the PTC was going down the same road as most “watchdog” groups, drawing attention to a controversy, best to ignore it, etc. etc…
now the show gets canned and EVERYONE REPOSTS on the message board that THE SHOW SUCKED. MTV SUCKS, yadda yadda….
more BS & spin to cover the tail of a shit show that didnt deserve being put on in the 1st place. The previews of this show and the images used to sell it showed the show was all lame ass image for controversy and NOTHING FOR SUBSTANCE.
The UK show shouldve been repeated here maybe after 10pm or something and see what kind of reaction that would have made. I know Being Human is repeated in BBC america and its a great experience. the scifi channel redo not so much.
Astonishing what folks will defend and why they will defend it. oh “…but the show had great music…” ???
Um, actually whether you want to acknowledge it or not, the PTC does deserve the credit for this as they were able to get SIX major advertisers to pull their advertising through the direct contact campaigns withing two weeks of the show premiering. Good or bad, they were certainly effective and that’s why the show was canceled. The ratings weren’t particularly awful however they couldn’t sell advertising for it which made the show a loser.
As an side, the content was completely inappropriate for basic cable. The show should have been on premium cable and yes, it did suck which is probably why no premium channels wanted to pick it up to begin with.
Skins in the UK was unrealistic, shock value tripe. It has about as much heart and wit as a dry biscuit. I’m not surprised it didn’t fly in the US.
the BBC made a Skin’s-esque show in the UK called Stanley Park which was actually better than Skins– I heard Fox picked it up – what happened to this? Maybe they’ll do a better job considering Glee is such a hit.
Kids in the U.S. would never watch a bunch of Brits. Plus, they wouldn’t understand a word they said. The U.S. version was good. The cast awesome. Get over the British. I think MTV are a bunch of chickens for canceling it before it had a chance.
Where on earth do people who can’t understand (and believe others can’t understand) an ordinary British accent come from? Are you living in some small town in 1953?
Travel! Expand your horizons! Do something to make yourself and your assumptions slightly less insular.
I can’t understand a lot of the UK lingo…..that’s what makes it fun to watch. Plus their one-liners are effin brilliant.
This show was an atrocity and absolute filth and amazing they didn’t get reprimanded by the FCC for even airing crap like this.
Let’s also hope Jersey Shore will suffer the same consequence soon.
I love mtv skins soo much!
the show is a lot more than just drugs, sex and alcohol. i just don’t understand why they have to cancelled it just beacuse some crapy parents were afraid that their children would get involved in that things… a mean, that’s how things really are this days so deal with them!!!!! not because you don’t heard about it or you don’t see them on tv means that those things will instantly disappear.
let’s stoped with the “if you don’t like it, ban it” bullshit!!
