EXCLUSIVE: NALA Films has set Paul Blart: Mall Cop helmer Steve Carr to direct and Rob Riggle and Thomas Lennon to star in The Boondoggle, the comedy that the producer/financier bought in January as a spec. Riggle and Lennon play two guys who attend a boondoggle business trip. Despite the island-paradise setting, everything possible goes awry. Christopher Halvorson wrote the original draft. The film will shoot in late summer with NALA Films funding it.

NALA’s Emilio Diez Barroso and Darlene Caamano Loquet are producing with Joe Roth, Palak Patel and Barrett Stuart. Shooting will get underway in the summer. Carr’s Rumpus Entertainment partner Jason Taragan will be exec producer. Riggle will next be seen in the Tom Hanks-directed Larry Crowne and is shooting 21 Jump Street, while Lennon will next be seen in Bad Teacher. Lennon, who rewrote this script with Riggle, usually writes with Ben Garant, who hatched Night at the Museum and Reno 911!
NALA Films just financed and produced House of My Father, the Spanish-language comedy that stars Will Ferrell, and the Max Winkler-directed Ceremony.

Wow. What can you say about this mess?
First, Steve Carr had the opportunity to become an important filmmaker. To make material, add his vision and become a filmmaker. He want for the money with broad family comedies. His choice. By doing that he risked becoming an awful director of bad, I mean bad material. Everything about this stinks of C list. Rob Riggle is an example of today’s crap. Not that his bad. He’s average. Tom Lennon should be a movie star. Despite making money writing and some hit TV he ‘s never crossed over. He needs to step up to the big leagues. He needs to be surrounded by the best. Steve Carr certainly is not. Rob Riggle, mediocre. Now I’m sure Tom is repped at CAA but he’s not a priority and is happy to be in movie….
Mr.Lennon, you must work with great directors. Why you are bring packaged like this is questionable. You are talent enough to be in a movie with a real director. To hold your own.
Love Will Ferrall, Jim Carey…Stars. This package is sub par in my opinion. But who knows.
Very disappointing.
Hey son of gangster, what desk are you sitting behind? Get up off your brain and take your casting ideas back about a decade where they come from, funny script and a top team of talent…I’m sure you will be asking your boss for his tix to premiere.
Well, you certainly seem to know what you’re talking about. And you write so eloquently, I might add.
Tomhankshasagangsterson, You’ve confused me. From your diatribe, I assume you’ve read the script and think it’s not nearly as good as the people involved. No? You haven’t read the script? Really? Well, to get greenlit, it must be pretty good.
So what are you saying? Steve Carr can be an important filmmaker if he chose not to have fun and bring people joy? You say that Rob Riggle is crap, and then in the next breath say he’s average and mediocre? That just makes no sense. He’s not Will Farrell or Jim Carrey (Yes, Two R’s – just like Farrell and Rob Riggle. So they have that in common!) In any case, Rob Riggle is a damn funny guy. Tom Lennon should be a movie star and should step up to the big leagues? Hello, he rewrote this script and is starring in this movie. That’s the big time in my world. It’s pretty unreasonable to think he could call up Joe Roth and say, “Hey, make my movie!” Oh, snap, Joe Roth IS one of the producers. Then you say that Mr Lennon should work with great directors? But didn’t you say that Mr Carr has that potential?
Clearly, you don’t understand what it takes for a movie to get made. Especially one that doesn’t have a roman numeral in the title or a comic book as source material.
Bottom line, it might not have Jim Carrey and Cindy-Lou Who, it might not have Will Farrell and Sleestaks, but I will watch it when it comes out because I enjoyed Paul Bart: Mall Cop, Reno 911!, and Rob Riggle (Who I think is funny in just about everything.)
Thank you.
It’s “Ferrell,” dude.
Oh, snap! Will Ferrell & Colin Farrell, the Farrelly Brothers! I’m so confused!
Thank you so much, Emilio. Latino, Spanish-speaking population is at record highs in this country. They’re the bigger spenders in entertainment. On route to culturally defining the future generations in the U.S. — and what does our filthy rich, Mexican entrepreneur, imported straight from Mexico, the ‘mecca of monopolies’? Buys a typically commercial purely Anglo project. Well done. What happened? Captain America was already taken, genius?
That “filthy rich, Mexican entrepreneur” just made a Spanish language film called CASA DE MI PADRE. Me thinks you sound celoso. Give the guy a break, he gets stuff done. What have you done lately?
Lennon and Riggle together sounds like a hilarious combo. And people forget that Steve Carr is super talented. Say what you want, but Paul Blart made $150 Mil. If this lives up to its potential, Riggle will be a huge star.
I kind of agree with Gangsterson’s post.
Steve Carr was going to be an important filmmaker? Really? Next Friday spoke to you? He’s a funny director of a certain type of movie and he knows how to make the most of the material and cast and make people a bunch of money. How awful! Whatever. MIddle America is laughing with him all the way to the bank.
Ps Lennon (and Garant) wrote on two of his movies previously, it’s a good collaboration. Oh and Rob Riggle is hilarious.
This is one of the funniest scripts of the year.can’t wait to see. Go suck it haters!
Rob Riggle and Tom Lennon together on a boondoggle sounds like a comedy dream / hit! Carr can definitely deliver, after all look what he did with Paul Blart – 150 Mill!! This sounds like an awesome trio!!
Greenlit=Good script? Lol.
This is an original screenplay by a new writer — not some studio created Frankenstein’s Monster of a script, cobbled together to meet contractual obligations. I would also say it has to be at least pretty good for someone to put up the money.
Tom Lennon is hilarious. Rob Riggle is okay. I would have liked to see Lennon with a Whalberg.
Kevin James is hilarious.
Steve Carr awful. Is this script a package? A sacnut if dough? Come on, Carr has no potential. Just a guy getting credits.
Lots of movies get greenlit for no reason creatively. We all know that. This movie sounds fishy. There is no reason for this to be made.
Joy: joy is sitting in a dark theater and forgetting about the clock. This one I give 10 minutes before I’m toking away. Bebop.
Some of Steve Carr’s movies have been huge financial successes. But his movies are also terrible and barely watchable. Both are facts. Let’s just leave it at that. This is a big business and apparently there’s room for everyone.
Hater, There is room for everybody if you are in it. Btw what movies have you made?
Steve Carr should not be a director. Anyone schmuck graduate from film school could Di his job. He shows no vision. Isn’t that what a director brings?
Bye-bye
I think Steve just needs his original editor back with him making movies. That editor that cut all of his early music videos…where is that editor anyway. I hear he is amazing! CUTTING edge when it comes to comedy!!
I love Steve’s work. It satisfies a niche in the film industry and I think he does it well. There is nothing wrong with light hearted comedies with family bends or other! Everyone is working hard and has paid there dues. Steve works his ASS off just like every other director out there.
There is a lot worse someone could do! and you have seen that on the big screen!!!
I just read the script! Loved it! And Steve Carr is definitely a great director. He SHOULD be up there with the top 5 in hollywood alongside Todd Phillips, Jay Roach’s, etc. He’s definitely underrated. And Rob Riggle will never be a huge vehicle as a solo actor, but can definitely be a mainstream actor in buddy-duo comedies. But we’ll see. Danny McBride tried and viewers thought he’s better as a supporting character on screen. May be true with Riggle. Only time will tell. But this script is the one to take that chance with. Cant wait to see it
