SPOILER ALERT! SPOILER ALERT! SPOILER ALERT! SPOILER ALERT!
It’s the heavily hyped show that rewrote the rules for TV talent contests
on the networks this spring. But it also cost a whopping $1.4 million per episode. (NBC’s ‘The Voice’ Carries Sky High Pricetag) So we’d be remiss not to tell you that coach Adam Levine’s 33-year-old singer Javier Colon received more votes than the three other finalists tonight and won NBC’s The Voice for $100,000 and a recording contract. Host Carson Daly said Colon received less than 2% more votes than first runner-up Dia Frampton and also beat Beverly McClellan and Vicci Martinez after 10 weeks of competition, including blind auditions and battle rounds.
Colon, an experienced singer and songwriter from Connecticut with Dominican and Puerto Rican parents, belonged to EmcQ and The Derek Trucks Band before going solo. At one point he was signed to Capitol Records. He will now join the seven runners-up on a summer concert tour for The Voice that won’t include the four coach/judges: Christina Aguilera, Blake Shelton, Cee Lo Green, and Levine. Based on Holland’s reality singing competition and created by Dutch television producer John de Mol, The Voice has been the most successful show for the hit-starved NBC in a very long time, and the network is wasting no time getting started on Season 2 by casting beginning now for Spring 2012.

The ladies were robbed. I smell further failure in Colon’s future.
I think Colon has a bright future. I think there are some execs at capital right now kicking themselves. The man has one of the most unique and incredible voices heard in a long time. The fact that he can sing what he can sing and sings what he does sing is a rarity among good looking men such as Colon. He will sell records. And a lot of them. No doubt.
Curious – Why is Dia’s songs outselling Javier’s on iTunes though? And why is she getting more clicks and comments?
Gotta keep in mind itunes is only part of the votes that count. I can definitely see Dia being more popular with the younger internet crowd while Colon is more appealing to the older crowd that may have used the phone voting system. In any case it was really close between the two of them
well if dia is so popular and so loved by everyone, why did javier win? Cause last time I checked he had more votes and not to critize dia cause I loved her from the beginning but we cannot change things just cause we don’t agree with them, its not nice to start saying dia is more talented because people liked her songs more, javier from the beginning was the best singer just cause all 4 judges liked him more, sooo lets not make ourselves feel better by saying that the itune results were more valueble because thats NOT true.
Javier had the most amazing smile–he was a winner from the beginning. Kudos to all the other finalists. I must say I was stunned at Javier’s duet with Stevie Nicks; her voice is completely gone. I thought it was the mike at first, but it was really Stevie. Javier saved the night first by following her bizarre music conduction; second, Javier was able to sing so strongly and harmonically to Stevie’s very thin voice that he made the song sound rapturous. Clearly, Javier has a lot of class and musical strength to last him a lifetime.
They need to fix the battle rounds. They need to add more blind auditions.
Did you read Finke’s comment that the shows cost $1.4Mil per? That’s why it’s not a longer season show like American Idol. NBC can only afford the short summer-like seasons for its reality shows because to employ those judges cost a lot of money. Then you have to pay the singers to be on the show, and on and on.
Are the judges coming back? I don’t see how they can keep up their touring schedule and DO the voice?
Totally agree. The “boxing ring” sing-offs were awful, but visually and musically, that’s when I stopped watching.
Agreed. And I definitely do think they’ll tinker with the rules, things changed way too fast and way too often.
Dia Frampton has a nice voice and is beautiful and all but she’s had her chance in the record industry, having fronted a very popular indie rock band Meg and Dia that was signed to Doghouse and Warner Bros. records respectively.
It’s nice that a fresher, less accomplished — but no less talented — VOICE in Javier took the throne Wednesday night. And he absolutely NAILED that Stevie Nicks song… so much so that Adam Levine was almost brought to tears. So way to go Javier. And congrats to all of the finalists. I would pay to hear any of them sing, they were that good.
Like I stated above, wonder how BIG their career will be from this point on? All of them are 2nd and 3rd chancers who didn’t get traction from record companies; what do they expect now?
Javier has had his chance as well. In fact, his song Crazy broke into the Billboard Charts and peaked at 95 in 2003. He fizzled out quickly after that, but how is that any different than the chances that Dia Frampton had?
The ladies were brilliant, but Javier is the voice. The duet with Stevie Nicks sealed it for me in the end (even though it did not count for the results, it counted for who had the best voice in my opinion)because when listening to Dia’s duet it put me to comparing her to the original Dolly Parton. She was channeling Dolly, deal with it. We already have Dolly. And while Dia’s voice clearly is beautiful and all her performances were wonderful, they weren’t always uniquely her. Javier is Javier. Adam was on point when saying that was the most beautiful duet he’d ever heard. I felt the same, and I’m not even a big Stevie fan, royalty aside. All four will do great things. The idol shows have shown us that sometimes even the second place contestant goes on to better things than the winner so don’t despair Diazon’s. I hope to see a CD from Beverly…I’d buy it. Xenia will have one too, just wait…and be happy for Javier, his talent is dazzling.
I knew Javier would win the show from back at the blind auditions. He was clearly the best singer. Don’t get me wrong, the ladies are amazing in their own right, but my top 4 were Javier, then Vicci, Beverly, then Dia…actually I liked Xenia more than Dia. I’d even put Frenchie ahead of Dia.
other thoughts: Xtina finally wore something that didn’t shove her breasts up to her throat; Adam and Javier’s duet of “Man in the Mirror” was amazing, as well as Cee-Lo and Vicci’s duet of “Love is a Battlefield”—loved ‘em!
“Hit show?” I guess if 12mill viewers is considered a hit, sobeit. But it still has 8 million more to go match American Idol. Not only that, these singers are 2nd chancers. They’ve bounced from Broadway show to Bdway show, from label to label, and this is their last chance. I don’t expect to see any of the finalists or others on a major label.
Let’s face it — the music field is TOO crowded. That’s why labels are being very cautious about signings. Even AI has scaled back it’s prize from $1Mil to $250K. The voice prize is $100K? Really?
Is coach Adam Levine the same guy from Verve Talent and Literary Agency? Just wondering.
None of these people will ever come close to the success of Daughtrey, Carrie Underwood, Adam Lambert (?) or even this year’s top three on Idol.
The Voice is all about the judges and silly stick like blind auditions and UFC in the ring singing challenges, etc….BUT, not focused enough on talent.
Maybe, next year The Voice will actually live up to its title and have some really incredible voices…what a novel concept.
Additional comment is that the ratings are great for NBC with a 3’5 in the 18-49 demo and a total audience in excess of 10 million…but compared to Idol…these are nothing numbers.
More interestingly is that the numbers did not grow to demonstrate the show is adding more viewers…and this was building to the final.
The Voice has work to do to become a really valid success.
I was and am a Big Vicci Martinez fan..thought she was great
but I knew Javier would win..3 ladies against one guy..Forget
it..they were all very talented ,,really much better than
the Idol winners.. this a a great show… with very talented
judges…
Um, you realize that Idol gets about 50% more viewers but costs about 300% more. 1.4 million isn’t a crazy price at all.
the voice just fine but they need to creat a good relation between the judges.
Here is a question. Do all the people who audition for the show need to be a semi success already? It seems like all these people already had a record deal. Is there any unknown talent on the show?
I was such a fan, I told everyone to watch the voice, til christina voted Jesse off… I think for that reason alone
the voice should vote christina off. She certenly doesn’t know talent when she sees it. I only hope Jesse makes it big and thumbs his nose at her. I’ll watch it again once I know that talent like Jesse’s is not voted off by a judge no less. These people put the music life in the judges hands and for the most part Adam and CeeLo know talent (and I thought christina, but I was
mistaking). I’ve been soooooo mad I couldn’t write and tell you how I felt and I also thought I’d get over it, but I didn’t and I
just thought you should not why American Idel is doing better than voice, you should asked the american people how they feel about this….
