Here’s how fast things move in Hollywood. At Cannes, I got my confirmations and revealed that Ryan Gosling would direct and star in MGM’s remake of The Idolmaker. Now, a couple weeks later, I get to report that he’s had to back out of the picture, at least for now. He just informed the studio he would be too busy. He’s in pre-production on A Place Beyond the Pines, which reteams him with Blue Valentine director Derek Cianfrance, and then Gosling moves immediately into the Ruben Fleischer-directed Gangster Squad, starring with Sean Penn and Josh Brolin in the period crime drama for Warner Bros. MGM is convinced that Idolmaker is a plum project and the studio and will continue developing the picture. If Gosling is available, they will revisit it down the line. It is fun to watch Gosling’s transformation from darling of the independent film set to arguably the most coveted young leading man for studio films. After turning down lead roles in recent years I’ve heard included Superman, Jack Ryan, Akira and The Lone Ranger, Gosling is suddenly giving the studios a chance. He impressed the Cannes set with the Nicolas Refn-directed Drive, and Warner Bros is offering him everything after testing Crazy, Stupid, Love, with the studio getting Gosling to reteam with Refn in a remake of Logan’s Run. It looks like MGM will have to find another star for its Idolmaker, the remake of the Taylor Hackford-directed film that starred the late Ray Sharkey as a music promoter.

Mr. Gosling doing studio films is like Alanis Morissette going platinum, not a good thing.
Calling all wannabe actors. You can be really talented and succeed! No clubbing, okay looks, a decent loyal actor. That is the great Ryan Gosling.
“Okay looks”?! How you defame Young Hercules! This gorgeous specimen has abs of steel! Are you blind?!? How dare you?
Ryan is the man.
Mike, Leo Di Caprio is the most in-demand young actor in Hollywood, not Gosling.
don’t forget Michael Fassbender
How do you “continue developing” a picture that has already been produced, practically premiered on airlines, and has no particular reason to be remembered? Might as well skip shopping for fresh foods and “develop” yesterday’s leftovers. Gosling can now open a picture. Why should he have to waste his clout opening a remake?
Lay off the bong pipe. Gosling is moving into mainstream movies hoping to develop into someone who can open a picture. He can’t open squat yet. Seven years ago after the Notebook, I hoped it would happen. But so far, no. He is getting opportunities because everybody is hoping he develops into someone who can open pictures. It’s in all our best interests. Johnny Depp isn’t going to live forever.
He probably said to himself “Ok, I’m extremely well respected and considered a great actor, NOW I can go for the pay day.”
I don’t blame him. He’s done it the right way, and he really is good in almost everything he does.
Justin Timberlake was recently reminiscing about his days with Ryan Gosling as Mouseketeers in the Mickey Mouse Club in some interview. Now JT wants to be a movie star. We’ll see.
The guys got skillz! He’s one of the handful of actors that if he’s in a movie I’ll check it out.
I respect Gosling. He’s a great actor and has an amazing screeen presence. I’m glad he’s passing on this project. The title and concept of the Idolmaker make it sound like a Simon Cowell biopic. Of course, all we need is Coke and Ford product placements in the movie and it will be.
It’s odd to me there are people who are divided on the subject of his appearance…dude is HAWT! He has sex appeal and magnetism to spare.
I don´t think that Gosling is a fine actor. I think he´s horrible. But that´s just my opinion. And he isn´t good looking in my opinion.
I think Zac Efron is 1000 times better looking.
Bye Jessica
Gosling is every thinking girl’s favorite eye candy.
Plus, he’s one of our very finest under-40 actors (I’d definitely put him in the DiCaprio class).
I’ll see ANY movie Gosling makes.
(Check out “All Good Things” if you missed it, folks: a terrific little gem that deserved a much larger profile. And Kirsten Dunst is fantastic in it as well.)
Ryan Gosling IS hot, talented and I’m keeping my fingers crossed for his continuing success. I can’t wait to see CRAZY STUPID LOVE and DRIVE. Ever since I saw his perf in HALF NELSON, I’ve been following his every move. He is amazing!
