EXCLUSIVE: Paramount Pictures just closed a mid- against high-six-figure deal to acquire the spec script Bastards by Justin Malen. It seems to be a case of good timing for the R-rated comedy, coming on the heels of the success of Bridesmaids and The Hangover Part II, and the promiscuous misbehavior by high-profile figures like Arnold Schwarzenegger, John Edwards and Congressman Anthony Weiner. Montecito is producing with H2F Management.
In the spec, two brothers are raised to believe their father died when they were young. They discover that’s a lie, and their mother confesses she was a wild child in the 70s who bedded many powerful people she met at Studio 54, including politicians, athletes and movie stars. The siblings venture out on a road trip to find their real father. Deal moved quick, taking 24 hours from when Malen’s reps at Verve and H2F Management brought the spec to market. Paramount moved while other studios were mobilizing. Malen last sold Prick to New Regency, and he is writing Trophy Husbands. The attorney was Jeff Frankel.

this script is seriously funny. chris fenton and chris cowles with malen hit it out of the park on this one. congrats on an old school fast sale.
If it were a funny script, Montecito wouldn’t be producing.
Agreed. Well done all around. Congratulations to everyone involved.
Sounds fun, but wasn’t that exact plot on UGLY BETTY? I think it was Amanda’s mom who got knocked up at Studio 54, and Amanda went searching for her father (who turned out on the show to be Gene Simmons)?
@Lizzie
And he turned out, not to be her father.
Verve guys sellllling!!!!
Great Job Malen! Really great, funny writer.
So happy to see a spec go out wide and sell with no attachments and without a big name writer! That’s inspiring!
Amen brother!
Go Verve!!!
Mike Judge can still make non-Beavis and Butt-Head stuff?
Frankel is a rock star go Jeff Go.
Frankel is crushing it.
can this happen more please?
Chris Fenton has been developing and selling great material for years…he does an amazing job for his clients. Hes a smart guy, honest and doesn’t screw people over, at the same time an ex-morris agent, he’s INCREDIBLY creative and persistant as it relates to dealmaking…agencies and studios love working with him, and he works tirelessly for his clients.
I just got this great idea – they should set the whole movie to ABBA music!
Justin Malen is the next hottest writer in Hollywood. Mark my words!
