EXCLUSIVE: Paramount is moving closer to signing on for Noah, the big-ticket re-telling of the Noah’s Ark story that will be the next film from Black Swan director Darren Aronofsky. Deadline told you early this month that CAA was shopping the picture. Bidding came down to 20th Century Fox and Paramount, both of which were vying to partner with New Regency, which has been involved all the way through the process. Aronofsky wrote a script that is being rewritten by Gladiator scribe John Logan. Noah might only have gotten got a few pages in the Bible, but Aronofsky has turned it into a sprawling fantasy epic that will cost north of $100 million. Aronofsky dropped out of The Wolverine after his long-gestating Black Swan finally came together and grossed $315 million worldwide on a $12 million budget. What a time to mount a dream project, when you’ve just generated one of the most profitable movies in recent memory. This will take a few days to crystallize, but I’m convinced that Paramount will emerge as the partner on the picture. New Regency is closely aligned with Fox, but I believe the company will still play a role in the funding of the picture. More to come on this one.

I wonder if Bale is still attached as reported?
This is something I will see only if Bale ends up taking the lead.
I hope Paramount enjoys losing money, cos they sure are gonna lose a pretty penny on this turkey.
Yeah, good thing they passed on that other religious bomb PASSION OF THE CHRIST! What did that turd do? $600M?
Paramount is going to take a BATH on this one. Doesn’t anyone remember THE FOUNTAIN? This could be epic, in a bad way.
with the right script this could be an epic
one wrong move and the Waterworld comparisons are inevitable.
With Evan Almighty costing 175 million for a 90 minute comedy this doesn’t look like a smart investment. This movie could be something with the right lead but I just see over runs from working with animals and water two things that are very expensive practically and visual effect wise. Church crowds are the only hope unless Johnny Depp stars.
Unless they have Mila Kunis and Natalie Portman bumping uglies on the Ark, I smell a bomb of Biblical proportions.
Turkey alert!! Of “Water World” proportions …
Three cheers for risk-taking.
If they do it from a Biblical perspective and it’s well made (Darren certainly knows how to make a good movie)the church crowds will come out in droves. If it goes against Scripture, you are all right – there is no point in making the movie.
Also following in the sandal steps of John Huston, who did it for Dino DeLaurentiis in 1966, and the websteps of Donald Duck, who did it for Disney in 2000. How about Bill Cosby as Noah. Riiiiiiiight.
If this somewhat traditional, it will be huge internationally. You guys gotta get your heads out of domestic.
Hey Brad,
Don’t do this! The risk reward ratio is not in Paramount’s favor….this may just be Paramount’s Poseidon.
Here’s a unique casting opportunity…Harvey Weinstein as God.
Mr. Logan, as you write this script look up two thing’s online, 1. The Strait of Gibraltar. 2. THE ZANCLEAN FLOOD. Myself, I’d go the route of a historical “what if” type of story. P.S. ‘Gladiator’ is one of the best dam movie’s ever made, and among my top 10 favorites.
