ABC Entertainment Group president Paul Lee has made his expected post-upfront move, reshuffling the executive teams at the network and the studio, with promotions/new roles for John Saade, Vicki Dummer, Patrick Moran, Amy Hartwick and Lynn Barrie.
After months of speculations that Lee won’t keep ABC’s dual leadership structure of the alternative department with the contracts of co-heads John Saade and Vicki Dummer coming up, Lee is indeed going go for a single head of the department. But unlike the last summer changes in the marketing department where one of the co-heads, Mike Benson, stepped down, both Saade and Dummer will be staying at ABC. John Saade, former SVP Alternative Series and Specials & Late-Night, is being promoted to EVP Alternative Series & Late Night Programming, overseeing solo all of ABC’s primetime alternative/reality series and Jimmy Kimmel Live. This is the title Saade and Dummer’s predecessor Andrea Wong held before leaving for Lifetime.
Fellow SVP Alternative Series and Specials Vicki Dummer has been named SVP Current Series and Specials, overseeing all ABC primetime current series and specials. Both Saade and Dummer will continue to report to Lee. Dummer replaces Lynn Barrie, who oversaw current programming for the past season as SVP Current Programming. She was put in that role last summer, shortly before the exit of ABC’s previous topper Steve McPherson. Barrie was previously VP Comedy for the network, having been brought over by ABC head of comedy Samie Falvey from 20th TV, where she was also a comedy executive. Barrie will now return to the comedy department as SVP Comedy Development, reporting to Falvey, also SVP Comedy Development.
The star of Patrick Moran is rising fast at ABC. Eleven months after he joined ABC Studios as SVP Drama Series, Moran is being promoted to SVP and Head of Creative Development for the studio after Lee was reportedly impressed by his first development cycle as head of drama. Barry Jossen, who comes from a production background, will continue as EVP ABC Studios with largely operational and administrative responsibilities. Moran will continue to report to him but will now also have an editorial line to Lee. The setup is reminiscent of ABC Studios’ old days, when former studio president Mark Pedowitz too had a top creative executive, EVP Julia Franz, though Moran now has a dotted line to Lee.
At ABC’s comedy department, Barrie will fill a void that will be left by the departure of VP Comedy Development Amy Hartwick. She is been promoted to SVP Comedy Development for ABC Studios, reporting to Moran. She replaces ABC Studios’ previous comedy head Kevin Plunkett, who is leaving the company. Only one of the five new ABC comedy series for next season, Man Up, hails from ABC Studios. On the drama side, six of the eight shows were developed at the in-house studio. Like Moran, Hartwick has been a rising star at the company, having developed such series as Modern Family, Samantha Who? and Happy Endings.
“These changes bolster the creative strength of our studio with two of our strongest up-and-coming creative executives; empower our current department which is the heart of the network; and position our successful reality department for even greater achievement in the future,” Lee said. The moves follow the recent departure of EVP Suzanne Patmore-Gibbs as Lee opted to eliminate the extra layer and directly oversee the network’s development teams.

Patrick Moran is a fantastic executive, smart and great to deal
with, lucky is the writer to gets the shot!
Am so glad he’s being respected and appreicated at ABC unlike the
way he was dealt with at his prior place.
Why doesn’t Lynn Barrie run comedy instead of Samie Falvey?
Totally agree with this. Lynn has way better taste than Samie.
I’m surprised Samie Falvey’s carpet didn’t get Kevin’s job as it had about as much to do with the success of Modern Family as Amy and she walks all over it too.
You are ungrateful and showing your ignorance of the development process. If writers didn’t have network execs championing their vision and the importance of the scripted genre at every possible turn, the only things network presidents would air are reality competition series.
ComedyGuy –I thought for a moment your comment was meant to be sarcastic. But alas, it seems you’re serious. That you actually think execs are the only thing standing between scripted tv and it’s extinction for reality. That’s a dangerous level of delusion. I hope this town doesn’t completely destroy you.
Thanks for the education on how the world works. Now go back to answering Amy’s phone.
Lloyd and Levitan are renowned for not taking notes. Execs are just as responsible for Modern Family’s success as I am for the rain.
Yay Vicki! Congrats!
Smart move by Paul to restructure the alternative department. Sadly, he hasn’t gone far enough.
Saade is one of the least personable executives in the business. Pitching him is like trying to make love in ice water. Clearly he is better at managing up than retaining talent at the network or bringing new business to ABC.
The results will speak.
Moran, on the other hand, is a true star, a pleasure to work with and a magnet for talent.
With Saade staying, ABC will continue to fail in the alternative area. He’s a nice guy, but has no feel for television and NEVER takes any creative risks.
Oh, well…NBC will blow past them…they can re-rerun Wipeout and Dancing ad infinitum.
Yay Vicki, back to the same job you had nine years ago, you’re rocketing to the middle…again.
At Last! Congrats John. Couldn’t have happened to a nicer, more talented guy.
Its great to see all these former 20th TV executives, who were wilting under the Gary and Dana’s incompetent “leadership, grow under someone who is not afraid of true talent.
i kinda want to kiss pat moran – he’s so cute in the headshot…
get in line, buddy.
Kevin is a smart, funny executive who stands up for ideas he believes in. I’m sad he’s gone.
Hi Kevin.
kevin has lots of fans. he’s one of the good guys and everyone i’ve talked to is upset he’s the one leaving, not samie
Yes, let’s fire the old idiots and bring in new idiots. There are too many fucking executives. Good shows get on the air in spite of these people, not because of them.
And even with Samie Falvey at ABC, the network managed to get a couple of really great comedies on the air- Suburgatory and Apartment 23.
Well, Jack, even a broken clock is right twice a day.
I’m sick of all of the haters on this board. I am someone who actually knows both John & Vicki extremely well and have worked with them as a colleague and a producer. John is very smart, didactic, and knows how to fix shows that are broken. Besides Andrea, he was the one true champion who got behind DWTS which is still a huge hit for the network. Vicki has vision and is responsible for one of the best shows in the history of ABC–Extreme Makeover Home Edition. They are both good people and it’s unfortunate that there can only be one head. If you have a problem with one of them, why don’t you say it to their face instead of hiding behind this message board…or better yet, go get a job!
You’re a big hero except for leaving your name off your post.
The best development executives are keenly aware of one thing above all else… their efficacy as far as improving a project is minimal (no matter how smart they are). If you’re not the talent, you’re a talent scout. It’s all about the writers you get into business with in the first place.
Yay Patrick!
Worked with Patrick at his old place. Glad to see he’s getting the recognition he deserves. Great executive and fun to work with.
Amy also heavily championed The Middle…another winner! she’s great. that tall pretty woman in comedy at abc studios is really great too…keep her around!
As an executive who developed comedies and dramas at two major studios for over 20 years between them I can honestly say I never saw a bad first draft in comedy ever become more than mediocre at best by the table read. Sometimes those shows would get on the air anyway but they never succeeded over the long haul with a few exceptions. The most successful comedies always had really good to great first drafts that maybe improved by %15 on the stage.I’ll bet you the Modern Family first draft was terrific. Dramas on the other hand could be saved in editorial if the casting was solid. Executives, and remember I was one, make for too much of the development process. It’s in current and business affairs where executives can really make a difference over the course of a seven year run. Not by giving notes on scripts every draft but by making sure the asset’s create the most financial value for all involved. The most important decisions made by executives and producers continues to this day in Casting. Good luck to all of these new faces. I have never heard of any of you. Enjoy it while you can because it does not last forever. Have fun, make some money and hit a few home runs.
Maybe these people aren’t “haters” but actual professional writers who’ve had projects RUINED with notes by people like Kevin and Samie and others at ABC. Notes that pander to the lowest common denominator, that over-explain, that get rid of any edge or flaw in a character. yes there are good executives in this town but overall they are all brain dead non-creatives who are just trying to cover their asses and couldn’t write a one-sheet if their life depended on it. Yes, this is the PROCESS but that doesnt make it right.
I disagree with you on Kevin. He’s the best comedy exec I’ve ever dealt with. Smart notes that don’t pull threads and he actually has a sense of humor, unlike most comedy execs. I think his undoing was his taste was too smart and edgy for ABC.
Smart move. Vicki is a wonderful exec and a pleasure to pitch to. I worked with Amy and Lynn when they were execs at 20th. They are both smart and talented as well. I have yet to meet Patrick but he has a good rep. What’s with all the hate?
Great news for ABC and John Saade. John is a fantastic executive and this is an extremely well-deserved promotion!
I know all of the people mentioned in this article. every one of them. the truth is they are all good, smart executives. haters hate and hide behind aliases on message boards but i am sure would kiss the ass of all of these people in person. These execs are all accomplished and have survived in an extremely tough business. vicki dummer is one of the best executives in this town. hands down. She is smart, dedicated and a true champion of her producers and projects. saade, moran, samie, lynn barrie, hartwick and plunkett are all good, smart executives who support writers vision and are a pleasure to do business with. anyone who hates on this group of people should look in the mirror and try to figure out where the anger is coming from as it is misplaced and is more reflective of the reality of their own issues than the anything to do with these execs and their skill sets.
Face it, Bizzie, you’re the same as the haters, you’re just shouting (anonymously) from the other bleachers. Keep up the positivity! Praise all buyers! The emperors have the most beautiful clothing…
Look above. Someone already beat you to the same, obvious joke. Is this the kind of justified note that makes all you haters dislike executives?
We “haters” don’t even know each other. So why do we feel so similarly about the executives who buy our pitches and scripts? Hmm….
I don’t hate these people. I hate what they do. The very nature of development makes scripts less interesting. One of the reasons Louis CK’s show is so amazing is that it’s untouched by executives worrying that the tone is uneven, or that his character doesn’t have a fucking victory in every episode. Let TV be messy and quirky and it will be way less boring.
