PBS will air a two-hour version of its groundbreaking 1973 reality series An American Family on July 7, the pubcaster announced today. The original 12-hour series, which centered on the Loud family from Santa Barbara, Calif., aired in 1973 but has not been seen nationally in more than 20 years. PBS said the edited An American Family: Anniversary Edition “provides provides a fresh perspective to viewers who may have missed the original series airing nearly 40 years ago”; to further seek out new audiences, the two-hour version will stream on PBS’ Facebook page beginning June 27. The rebroadcast comes on the heels of HBO’s fictionalized account of the making of the series, Cinema Verite, which starred Tim Robbins, Diane Lane and James Gandolfini and aired back in April.

That’s great but i want them to release “I’LL FLY AWAY” on DVD. Amazing show. Amazing actors. I don’t understand why there is no DVD.
PBS has no rights to “I’ll Fly Away”. They aired reruns years ago, and partially paid a license fee for the wrap-up movie. But Warner Bros. owns the show, and would control a DVD release.
Why couldn’t they have done this with HBO? Run the 2 hour special on pbs and then have HBO offer the 12 hours on their OnDemand
I read somewhere that music clearances are one big hurdle to re-running the full 12-hour show. Just guessing that the 2-hour special will trim any music that’s problematic.
Wait…I’m confused. The day after I watched the premiere of ‘Cinema Verite’ on HBO, I stayed home all day and watched a marathon of all 12 episodes of ‘An American Family’ that aired on PBS. I am in L.A. my aunt in N.J. stayed home and watched it as well. So how has it not been aired nationally in more than 20 years if I, in California and my aunt in New Jersey both watched a marathon in April? Are they going to air the follow up reunion from when the oldest son was dying? That I would like to see.
Due to music clearances, it will make it difficult to release this series on DVD and the anniversary show will get hacked up a bit too, so DVR it if you want to watch it at your leisure.
PBS did re-air the entire miniseries the night after HBO premired “Cinema Verte” – I DVRed the whole series as I had always wanted to see it.
It’s dated by today’s standards but was very interesting from a historical perspective
I can confirm Joy’s comment. I watched all 12 hours on PBS the day after ‘Cinema Verite’ aired on HBO and all the episodes were intact, music and all. I wish HBO would re-air their own 1983 American Family reunion special and PBS would re-air 2003′s ‘A Death in an American Family.’
Could this be the start of PBS mining it’s vaults for ‘classic’ material? It would be a way for PBS to augment it’s programming with material that is new to some viewers and retro-cool for others. If so, I’d vote for “The Great American Dream Machine.”
