Prince William and his new bride Catherine will help kick off the inaugural “BAFTA Brits To Watch” black-tie event scheduled for July 9 at the Belasco Theater in Los Angeles. It’s on the itinerary of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s visit to California helping highlight the depth and range of British talent currently emerging in film, television and video games (Prince William was elected BAFTA president last year). The 42 emerging British talents have been selected by what’s described as an expert BAFTA panel. “They will generally not be complete beginners in their industry, and will have already begun to show real promise,” today’s statement explained. BAFTA will announce the names of those attending prior to the event, which has the support of the British Consulate-General in Los Angeles as well as American Idol executive producer Nigel Lythgoe, chairman of BAFTA in LA, who said: “Being given the opportunity of meeting Hollywood’s elite will provide a highly significant and beneficial moment for them, especially at such a formative stage of their careers.”

John V. Karavitis No disrespect to the newlyweds, but why are they news here? What’s their connect here? These two are merely famous for being famous, they have no “connect” to the British film industry. Even claiming that they are acting as ambassadors for their country’s actors and actresses is a weak argument. Where there no British actors of sufficiently high stature availabnloe (ir even in existence) in order to perform yeoman’s duty re this event? John V. Karavitis
Prince William has been the President of BAFTA since 2010 so it’s entirely appropriate that he heads this event and that it’s reported here.
Wow, how long did it take him to work his way up to the Presidency of the organization?
JVK: Prince William is the President of BAFTA, the British Academy of Film and Television Awards.
Oh honestly John K, they’re celebrities, they’re young, they’re energetic, they attract the attention of young people of their age – get a grip! Don’t be such a fuss. Oh, and did I say, they are British.
Ranny
why is he the head of BAFTA?
obviously some money under the table…
It’s not only appropriate for them to be there, but it’s also good strategy for BAFTA. Best way to get Hollywood power players in the same room with up-and-coming British talent is to bring in someone the power players would like to rub elbows with……real royalty.
It’s most definitely appropriate for Prince William to be President of BAFTA and for him and Princess Kate to come to Los Angeles for this event. Anything that brings positive attention to the film industry in Britain, the US and elsewhere should be embraced by all of us who make our living in entertainment. The only question I have is, why wasn’t I invited to meet them?
My sincerest apologies, I thank you for the clarification. I guess I’m just a bit jaded with the way that celebrity is treated in America, etc. I jumped to the wrong conclusion. It’s good to learn new things! John V. Karavitis
William & Kate Go HOLLYWOOD… I guess representing the British Film Industry which is really just a sub division of the American film industry, is as good an excuse as any to get the whole thing chalked up as a business trip. The poor old British tax payers are used to subsidizing the ultra rich.
Maybe after the success of THE TUDORS, William & Kate are here to talk pow wows and confabs with Hollywood agents regarding THE WINDSORS… a true story that would make the crimes of the fictional GODFATHER triology look like a walk in Hyde Park.
It’s the new look British monarchy… and they have a long history of tradition or rather showmanship, that even HOLLYWOOD would envy!
Why shouldn’t Prince William be head of BAFTA?
Good for business anyone? Its good the British are taking the film industry seriously and backing it with a high profile name.
