A plan for a series of public service announcements targeting first lady Michelle Obama’s “Joining Forces” initiative was unveiled today during a panel sponsored by the Hollywood guilds designed to create a dialogue about ways to share the stories of military families through film, television and digital media. Nearly 500 members of the Hollywood creative community attended the event at the Writers Guild Theater in Beverly Hills; the panel was moderated by J.J. Abrams and featured Obama as well as Army Wives creator Katherine Fugate. From the press release on the PSAs:
Joining Forces’ upcoming series of targeted PSAs will star Academy Award-winning actor Tom Hanks, Emmy Award-winning talk show host Oprah Winfrey, and Academy Award-winning director/producer Steven Spielberg and are set to air starting this July. Hanks’ PSA was written by Damon Lindelof, directed by Steve Carr and Joanna Kerns, and produced by Jason Taragan; Spielberg’s PSA was written by Katherine Fugate, directed by Joanna Kerns, and produced by Marshall Persinger; Winfrey’s PSA will be directed by Tom Shadyac (producer and writing credits TBD); all three PSA’s were executive produced by Lori McCreary.
In addition, Grammy Award-winning and Oscar-nominated songwriter Dianne Warren has donated an original, unreleased song, entitled “Compass” and performed by Grammy and CMA Award-winning country superstars Rascal Flatts, for use in the PSA campaign.
It was one of several stops in town for Obama, who tonight will attend a 2012 re-election campaign fundraiser for her husband. She also taped an appearance on Nickelodeon’s iCarly to promote “Joining Forces.” The show’s lead character is the daughter of a U.S. service member stationed overseas.

Hateful, teabagging, right-wing, vaguely-racist bashing of our beautiful First Lady in 5…4…3…2…

I’m a WGA member, former military. I would have liked to have gone to this. I looked on the website, thinking maybe I’d missed some kind of announcement about it, and found nothing.
Did I miss something?
Who was invited to this? How were they chosen? Or was this just another of those “A List only” events? Does anybody know?
Don’t worry, you’re not alone. The top two military themed shows on TV (NCIS and NCIS Los Angeles) weren’t represented on the panel. Those two shows combined reach 35 million viewers a week… Army Wives gets a tenth of that. Doesn’t make either the event or the organizers particularly credible, now does it?
There weren’t any writers (except moderator JJ Abrams) on the panel – just Mrs. Obama and three members of military families. Read the story or at the very least look at the pictures of the panel before criticizing.
Many of the attendees were servicemen and women, their families, and people involved with the Joining Forces campaign.
NCIS and NCIS LA are crime-solving procedurals. And while they are good shows, they are not primarily concerned with the lives of the families of armed service members stationed overseas.
I find this event very interesting.
How is “Army Wives” supposed to be showing a pro-military lives viewpoint? It is a soap opera based on the premise that being an Army wife is hard, pressure filled, and full of temptations.
This would be akin to having Kubrick appear before a Vietnam-era confab touting the credit of “Dr Strangelove”.
I would love for there to be some movies at least that show what the endgame of all this military interventionism is in the “war on terror”, since our political & military leaders cannot seem to articulate it well.
Clearly, you’ve never actually seen an episode of “Army Wives.”
I have, and the above poster is right. Army Wives is downright insulting to military families. “Over There” offered a much more credible and realistic look at the lives of those who are left behind when soldiers go to war, and what happens when they come back. It’s a shame that show was canceled, while Army Wives has been on for many seasons now.
While it’s true that being a military spouse is exceptionally stressful at times (heck, it’s a long running joke that if the Army wanted it’s soldiers to have wives, they’d have been issued at basic) their portrayal as weak, overly dramatic hysterics is about as insulting as it gets. For a show supposedly about military wives, I find it very telling that none of the several I know have anything good to say about the show.
Hey, Cash -
Interesting that you say that “Army Wives” is “downright insulting” to military families as one of the panelists, and herself a mother of four who’s husband – a SSGT in the USMC – mentioned on the panel that she quite liked the show.
Still, your opinion is just that… an opinion. You don’t have to like the show, you don’t need to watch it.
Hey, Graham – I agree that our government is all f*cked up and that Congress does horrible things like giving themselves lifetime payment and full healthcare after one term, while giving wounded soldiers 50% pay and limited healthcare… but at the same time, there should be a focus on this and if shining a light on these people will open an avenue through which they can talk about how they’re getting the shaft, then who cares who paved the road.
Regarding the VA hospital in Westwood. The property isn’t going anywhere. The Fisher House (a place for displaced and wounded vets) just opened on the campus and is, in fact, expanding there soon.
As for the rest of the angry, political-minded people commenting on this event, it’s purpose was genuine, the emotion in the room was overwhelming. If you didn’t get to attend and that makes you upset, maybe you ought to channel that bitterness into something positive… try going to joiningforces.gov and find a way to help a family in need or how you (as a creative person) can integrate storylines about those who serve (and those who support them) into your projects.
What IS insulting to military families and those who came out in support of them is that people can turn an event created for that purpose into a discussion about who’s show is better.
Stop all the cynicism, people. Don’t make it about politics or ratings or anything else. Find a way to change it all. DO SOMETHING. Wonder how many of you I’ll see at the Operation Gratitude event this weekend…
One of the panelists – whose husband is currently serving in Iraq – was asked which shows or movies portrayed military life accurately, and she replied, “Army Wives. I like that show.”
Interesting that the actual army wife who was on the panel said it’s the one show that consistently gets things right and another person commented later army posts are like ghost towns when it’s on because everyone is watching.
Right, left, Obama, Bush… it’s all the same powerful elite running everything. We’re in perpetual war. War has always been about profit and this is the latest PR gimmick to keep selling it.
Why doesn’t the first lady hang out at the local VA hospital and see the result of all the flag waving and perverted patriotism. By comparison our military earned a lot more in WWII than anything they get now. The treasonous politicians are always calling our military “heroes”. They all support the troops -and yet most vote against them receiving the care and help they fought and died for.
Like the VA hospital in Westwood -yes in Hollywood’s own backyard, deeded to the government for the needs of our veterans by the Janss family, the politicial whores think its now ripe for commercial development and exploitation.
And that unfortunately is the utter contempt and loathing the ruling elite have always had for the cannon fodder they keep sending off to die in war!
