Viewers had two options for fresh programming on English-language television last night: hockey (for the guys) and dancing (for the gals). The two-hour Wednesday premiere of Fox’s So You Think You Can Dance (3.0/9 in 18-49, 8.4 million viewers) was up 7% from last year’s Wednesday debut in the demo and down 8% from the season opener last Thursday. It was the reality series’ most watched Wednesday telecast in two years, as Fox easily won the night in both viewers and 18-49. Encouraging news for NBC Sports, which recently signed a massive 10-year deal with the NHL: Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final last night drew a 3.2 overnight rating/6 share, up 14% from last year’s opening game and the best rating for a Game 1 in 12 years. The hockey game will likely edge ABC (1.7/5, 5.1 million), which aired an all-comedy rerun lineup, for second place when the finals are released later today.

The comment about hockey for guys and dance for girls is really sexist!! I am a girl and I watched Hockey game 1 of the Cup final! Pfff
It needs to be noted, that maybe outside of the Pacific Northwest and hardcore hockey fans, that the ratings for the Stanley Cup are likely going to be under-rated on account of the fact one team plays in Canada. It definitely helped the NHL to get the New England market with the Bruins but the NHL and NBC made it seem there were only four American teams in the regular season: the Capitals, Rangers, Penguins, and Red Wings. There was no visibility of any Canadian team whatsoever, mostly for the purposes of ratings.
I thought that was a weird tack for them to take. I thought they would try to echo the Olympics and the Canada VS USA
Hockey game which had outstanding ratings.. NBC is the one growing the viewership of sport in the US and I think they maybe missed that promo opportunity for this series…
What about option three: Franklin and Bash along with Men of a Certain Age on TNT?
Small market but Massachusetts tv was inturupted by tornado coverage only sytucd and the bruins were on the big 5
