River Road Entertainment announced today that it has secured life rights to Beach Boys frontman Brian Wilson as well as his wife Melinda Wilson and is developing a feature film about the singer-songwriter’s wild and sometimes rocky life, during which he has battled drug addiction and mental illness and suffered a nervous breakdown while making Smile, the Beach Boys’ follow-up to their seminal album Pet Sounds. Oren Moverman, who was nominated for an Oscar for writing The Messenger, already is at work on the screenplay. (Moverman, repped by WME and NY Office, also is working on Universal and Working Title’s Kurt Cobain project, so he’s in the music biopic zone right now.) River Road founder Bill Pohlad and John Wells Productions will produce the Wilson pic, with Jim Lefkowitz executive producing.

cool that Melinda Wilson sold her life story rights too.
NOT
the 800 pound gorilla is mike love – who does not like Brian’s version of their story – and sued for songwriting credits and more when Brian published his memoirs.
Love doesn’t deserve much after the terrible way he portrayed brian and van dyke parks in one of those horrible tv movies. even john stamos wiped his hands of it.
river road is great. tree of life was awesome. can’t wait for this. and good to see that sarah lemkin is still working with great writers. she was a star at wme
this is great! i can only think that the only reason a proper movie hasn’t been done on wilson is cause the scope is too huge. tragic and ultimately redemptive. i’m sure they’ll do him justice.
Not the first and not the last to tackle this material.
How did they miss the opportunity to use a “Life of Brian” headline on this post?
Great – will he spend half the picture in Bed?
Hope you want to direct, Diablo Cody.
Awesome doc you can watch online that features very rare footage of Brian. It’s about the Beach Boy’s involvement w/ Charles Manson. Watch it streaming at:

Enjoy.
there’s no way the manson stuff will make it in. Plus there’d be more to do if it was a dennis wilson biopic (isn’t that being done too?). i wonder if the tapes from the manson/brian wilson sessions even exist anymore.
Guy has a pretty legit bat.
I do not see how they are going to turn a profit…But then again, with all the hard belly surfing girls, and quasi return to psychedelic 60s, maybe the film will do great…If, they tried to make a Rock and Roll “Amadeus”, it might work..!!!!
Wonderful news. Hard to believe this hasn’t happened to this point. Brian is a national treasure that deserves a respectful take on his story. Up until now with the exception of the Don Was movie, no one has seemed to be able to get it right.
This will be an Academy Award winning role for the right actor. Hope they cast the right guy. It will make or break this project. RR has an excellent reputation and I love what they did with Tree of Life. Beautiful movie.
Can’t wait for this movie to come out. I’ve heard rumors of this project for years. Please make this film!
YES PLEASE. Great source material, and Moverman is a great writer.
They need to minimize as much as possible actors portraying the Beach Boys wearing big obviously fake beards. That said, I think there is too much ground to cover for just one movie for it to be any good. I’m a big BW fan, so I hope I am wrobng.
All rock music biopics are cheesy. Some more than others. I’m a huge Brian Wilson/Beach Boys fan, but I dread the thought of a movie like this being made.
