I’m not sure if this is a stroke of genius or a harbinger of the apocalypse. Aw, hell, who cares: at least it’s funny. Entertainment Weekly, the official magazine of receptionists, interrupts their 24/7 coverage of the Twilight Saga movies long enough to devote attention to the Green Lantern. EW has a cover story entitled ”Why I’m Obsessed with Ryan Reynolds” that’s written by Ryan Reynolds in the third person. Explained the publication:
“We looked high and low to find just the right writer to pen our cover story on Ryan Reynolds. We needed someone who could match the actor’s sparkling wit, winning charisma, and staggering intelligence, not to mention his deep humility, inspiring humanitarianism, and perfect washboard abs. So we hired Ryan Reynolds. We don’t usually allow actors to write their own profiles, but hey, what can we say. We’re a little obsessed with Ryan Reynolds, too.”
Here’s what Reynolds “writes” about showbiz. (I don’t believe for a minute that EW top editor Jess Cagle wasn’t ghostwriting.) I especially like how he refers to his indie Buried that bombed at the box office:
“After moving to Los Angeles at the tender age of 19 — armed with only $600 and a rape whistle — he quickly established himself as one of Hollywood’s most dynamic and immensely talented waiters. Eventually Lady Luck gave him a wink and he broke into the business by scoring a lead role in a sitcom titled Two Guys, A Girl And A Pizza Place. Although the series was canceled 10 years ago, Reynolds still holds out hope they’ll change the title to something less stupid. Eventually he moved on to a career in feature films, including the one-woman show National Lampoon’s Van Wilder, which, surprisingly, garnered Reynolds absolutely no significant award nominations. Clawing his way out of a typecasting hole, he managed to secure a wider variety of parts, including several independent films that were later enjoyed by an audience of hundreds. Nonetheless, he knew that being a working actor is a rare privilege enjoyed by few. He continued to study the craft and work as hard as possible at proving himself. Bigger roles in better films followed, and Reynolds eventually found himself hurling a few fastballs in the big leagues. His pal and costar from The Proposal, Sandra Bullock, often refers to Reynolds as a possible contender to be ‘the Ryan Reynolds of his generation.’”

GREEN LANTERN is going to crash and burn. The reviews are godawful, the trailers looked like garbage, and I never bought the sentiment on DHD that the movie “is tracking off the charts” or whatever has been written here. Comic book nerds are going to laugh at it and I think audiences will be disinterested after having done X-Men and Thor in the last month.
Reynolds is terrific and he’ll probably survive this turkey…in fact he ought to do Marvel’s DEADPOOL now.
Gawd, the Marvel zombies are so bitter! Ryan Reynolds chose to do other films instead of Deadpool… GET OVER IT ALREADY! All this whining and hating over a stupid comic book character. How old are you, 11? Or maybe 50 and still living in your mom’s basement? Either way shut up and get a life.
LOL, sensitive much? I actually could care less about DEADPOOL. Just mentioning he could make another comic book movie if he wanted to since the man is talented and can likely survive a turkey like GREEN LANTERN.
BTW is every critic who hated it a “Marvel zombie”? If anything, you’re the one who sounds like a bitter guy who needs to “shut up and get a life.”
LOL @ “Mom’s basement.” That’s good. I have to remember that and use it some time. Is it your line or is it from something?
Haha
Saw GL last night. Much better than the borefest that was “Thor”. Has as many weak points as Thor but it’s strong points are much stronger. Unlike Thor trying to regain his powers the whole time, GL has his powers and uses them in a bunch of scenes. Don’t know why this has a much lower rating than Thor, i think critics jus have a hard on for Kenneth Branagh.
This is too funny all around. Love your lead in, Nikki. “EW the official magazine of receptionists….24/7 coverage of the Twilight Saga” is hysterical. I love that Ryan has a good sense of humor and doesn’t mind poking fun at himself. So many young actors take themselves entirely too seriously, but Ryan is endearing with his self deprecation. Hope Green Lantern does well for him, but even if it doesn’t, his personality will keep him in work. Hot and funny is a good combination.
And I can promise you the check to Ryan didn’t bounce. He’s done his job. BB
Green lantern may or may not suck but Ryan Reynolds is the coolest dude in Hollywood. This guy knows not to take himself too seriously.I can’t wait for Deadpool.
This is genius, and very well written. Shame that Green Lantern may not succeed, RR definitely deserves credit (and I thought Buried was great!)
Shann, Green Lantern looks absolutely horrible.
I like Reynolds. “Green Lantern” can do for him what “Batman” did for George Clooney.
The fact-checker must have an interesting story to tell.
Love the jab at EW about their Twilight coverage. That’s the main reason I ended up subscription to them last year. Just couldn’t deal with it every single week.
His writing abilities from this excerpt – whether or not it’s really him – is witty and bashful. I’m going to check out the EW article. I can’t think of other young stars being able to laugh at himself in public. Reminds me of Tom (Hanks) when he was younger. Wasn’t planning on checking out Green Lantern, but now I will at least put on my DirecTV or Netflix.
I’ll second the kudos for “EW the official magazine of receptionists”. That made me snort my morning coffee out my nose.
You’re a little late, Nikki. EW has gone from 24/7 Twilight coverage to blow-by-blow Hunger Games casting news. Waiting for them to break the scoop of who’s going to be the third assistant to the second unit director next.
PS: I thought Buried was quite good. GL looks horrible, and I’m a comic fan.
Okay Nikki. It’s time once again to offer to quit your job if this film makes more, than say….$10M this weekend?
If pretty Ryan flashes his Anthony in every pic – I’ll be in the audience.
Genius! Don’t be jealous Nikki because they were the first to think of it. RR is a very nice person and was smart to do this! His current movie looks awful.
This is NOT going to bomb. People need to relax. There is a huge GL fanbase that has never seen him on the big screen before. Plus it’s a big box office summer movie. It will make money..it may not be a super hit but it’s not going to bomb.
Hopefully none of the stink of a ‘Green Lantern’ flop will rub off on Reynolds. He’s always so enjoyable in whatever he’s in, and makes even ordinary scripts a fun watch.
I usually dislike jokey joke bios (Believe me in my job I see enough of them) but that was funny. Maybe it’s because he’s so darn likable.
BURIED made $20 mil worldwide on a budget of less than $2 mil. The Lions Gate MG alone put the film in profit. We should all “bomb” like that…
Agreed. BURIED was not only a well-paced thriller, but it was dynamic, contained, and did something different. 20 mil against a 2 mil budget (I’ve heard 3 mil as well) is hardly a bomb. GREEN LANTERN on the other hand feels like a failed attempt at a new franchise. I guess we’ll see how the numbers look this weekend.
Whether he wrote this or (as Nikki suggests) it was ghost written for him, Reynolds deserves credit for letting EW run a piece like this. Too many actors let fame and attention go to their heads; this guy seems to have his ego in check and is secure enough not to take himself too seriously.
Once upon a time, I spent a couple of years in what can best be described as a private Hollywood chatroom with Ryan Reynolds. (Okay, maybe that’s not the BEST description). His posts there were always, without fail, sharp, witty and refined. I assure you all, he did write that himself. In fact, I doubt even a single comma was changed. He is a gifted writer and, no, I don’t want to blow him.
His career is just fine with all those projects lined up. I wouldn’t be surprised if he may have written this. He was hilarious in “Just Friends,” especially that bit at the end when he sings into the mirror while the credits roll.
I’m not ashamed to admit I would like to be the mother of his children. And the reason I’m going to see The Green Lantern is because of Ryan. His ten minutes of screen time in Wolverine made that movie bearable to watch. And he actually made Blade 3 the best out of all the three, which says a lot because the first two were horrible.
I hate super hero movies but I wish gl would succed for two reasons: 1. The movie doesn’t seem like it is taking itself too seriously 2. Ryan Reynolds does not take himself too seriously. It is funny how blinding nerd rage is when it comes to comic book movies. They are almost always hackyned, transparent tripe. It is like every time one comes out you know millions of comic fans got duped. One comes out that is less self aborbed and it is pitchfork time.
I saw GL yesterday, and it’s not going to win any awards, not even for special effects, but it’s not horrible. And RR is always good, no matter whether he’s doing an awful movie or not. It was really entertaining, it was silly, it KNEW it was silly, and RR plays a pretty cheesy character.
So really, there’s nothing for anybody to get their panties all in a wad about (wonder if that’s why the GL costume is CGI instead of wardrobe? So RR wouldn’t get his panties in a wad?)
I really wish people who haven’t seen green lantern would stop rating a movie they know nothing about. It is great..well done and sticks pretty close to the comic. Ryan handled the role well bringing humor and levity. He brought humanity to a superhuman world and I hope there will be a sequel. I love this article excerpt and will definitely have to find a copy of the full version. Thanks for posting!
