From aliens to pirates – V executive producer/showrunner Scott Rosenbaum has been tapped to write the pilot script for Port Royal, FX’s drama series project produced by Graham King’s GK-tv, Gale Anne Hurd’s Valhalla Entertainment, FX Prods. and Fox International Channels. Based on the original idea by Hurd, Port Royal is set in the late 17th century on the island of Jamaica and chronicles the namesake port’s notorious rise as the “richest and wickedest city” in the new world, and as a self-governing safe haven for cutthroat pirates, corrupt politicians and ruthless merchants. UTA-repped Rosenbaum will executive produce the project with Hurd and GK-tv’s King, Tim Headington and Craig Cegielski. This marks Rosenbaum’s return to FX, where he worked on The Shield before switching to broadcast with stints on Chuck and V. If it goes to series, Port Royal will air on FX domestically and on the Fox International Channels abroad.

Hopefully he shows his “The Shield” chops and not more of the dreadfully plodding, lousy dialogue of “V”
I can’t wait to watch this! Scott’s an incredible talent and in his hands, it’ll be Shield-like and fascinating.
This is awesome news. Scott has great creative vision and knows how to build worlds. Can’t wait to see him dive into another dark world and get to do his thing cable-style.
“Based on an original idea by Gale Hurd”? Huh? This is the exact same premise as the upcoming Spielberg pirate movie that is set in Port Royal, Jamaica!
Gale Anne Hurd invented pirates (and history, too!).
If this makes it to series I will look forward to the show completely omitting the chattel slavery largely responsible for Port Royal’s economic ascent.
Very interested to see how this project comes together. It will be a big challenge no doubt.
Haven’t we already seen a movie about pirates and Port Royal? Isn’t that where Elizabeth and Will were from and where we first got a look at Captain Jack?
overall, TV needs more rum, sodomy and the lash
The PotC movies weren’t really pirate movies at all. They were ghost stories, monster movies, in which pirates were almost innocent bystanders. The Port Royal of PotC was nothing like the reality, which ought to make a much better story. And if the series runs for a few years and they decide to end it, the earthquake that destroyed the real Port Royal would be a classic finale episode!
