EXCLUSIVE: After a long search, Simon West is the choice to direct The Expendables 2, the sequel to the 2010 surprise hit action film. West, who most recently directed the CBS Films remake of The Mechanic with Jason Statham and Ben Foster, also directed Con Air, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and The General’s Daughter. Production begins in the summer.
The sequel is expected to have back an original cast that includes Sylvester Stallone, Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Mickey Rourke, Terry Crews and Jet Li. Stallone directed the original, which grossed $275 million worldwide, $103 million domestic. The film’s produced by Millennium Films and will be released by Lionsgate. West is repped by CAA.

I enjoyed “The Expendables” for what it was, a throwback action film. I just hope that with the sequel, Sylvester Stallone is wise enough to cast bad guys who actually pose a real threat. Eric Roberts with Steve Austin doing his dirty work really wasn’t so effective. He needs a super group of “Bad” Expendables lead by a big time action star.
Also, Simon West’s “The Mechanic” remake was a pretty cool straight forward action movie. It was the only film where I really liked Statham.
I agree with what you said about the movie but I disagree with your Statham comment. I think he is awesome!
First of all, Jason Statham is 5 alarm hot. Except for Crank2, he is awesome in everything.
PLEASE make the sequel a decent movie! Just watched Expendables last night. I wanted a fun action flick, especially with all these stars. But is was awful! A mess an all over the place. Did i really need to stupid sub stories – Cordelia and her abusive new man, Dolph and his drug abuse, the ridiculous general’s daughter? rotten!
The only thing I got out of this was that Randy Couture can do a decent job of acting.
And since Stallone was out throwing bones to everyone, why not Carl Weathers? HE would have been better than terry whats-his-name.
I am not looking for an Academy award caliber movie. But that movie was just a mess. It cannot be that hard to put together a decent action script.
Wow, didn’t know he was in jail this bad. Expendables was sort of ‘so bad it was good’. sizzle loser out.
What movie were you watching?! It was obviously the same expendables that I watched!!!
PLEASE dump the Jitter Cam for the sequel!
This is good news! Stallone can sleep in for an extra couple of hours. Who cares, it’s really Stallone’s movie.
That “jitter cam” was Stallone’s attempt to copy the “Bourne look”. It was weak. West is superior behind the camera compared to Sly. At least the sequel will look like it was shot in this decade. West is a good move for Avi.
Thought it was an 80s throwback.
what the hell happened to Simon West’s career? He started off with A level studio fare and now is the director of choice for B movies. Is it all about money???
Neil Marshall over West- he would have rocked it badass!
Never mind the jitter-cam, it’s the shoddy CGI gore I’d like dispensed with.
AWESOME! AWESOME! AWESOME!
while I was initially hoping for John McTiernan to bounce back with this sequel (provided he’s outta prison – is he?), Simon West is definitely worthy.
I think the first movie had enough extreme close up of these guys’ faces during awkward moments to cover the whole franchise — hopefully West can do without those.
Plus, a Nic Cage cameo couldn’t hurt now, could it????
Somewhere, Dave Callaham is laughing his way to the bank.
Stallone tried – and failed – to steal his script, concept, and story credit for the original EXPENDABLES movie.
Now Sly and Avi will be writing checks to Callaham for every dollar this franchise grosses…
no Arnold huh? can’t imagine why?
this is excellent news! I liked the actors/chemistry of the first film, but the direction was lacking.
Stallone was a solid director for rocky II/III/IV, but doesn’t have the chops/sensibilities for an action pic like this.
however, he did a nice job on Rambo
This is a damn shame. Stallone stepping down was a good chance to hire a director who can do really thrilling and clear action scenes, i.e. the opposite of Simon West. Don’t get me wrong, The Mechanic was okay, but only in the same way that The Expendables was. If you can forgive an action movie that has no good action scenes in it then it has some good scenes.
In fact, the shittiness of the action scenes in the Expendables is part of a degeneration of cinematic language that started with Armageddon and its hyperactive little brother Con Air. I was hoping that since Stallone is working with Walter Hill on the one he’s filming now that he was looking at old school classicist type directors and not another one of these guys that just shakes the camera around at random because nobody’s gonna have a clue what’s going on after they edit it anyway.
Where are they filming the sequel please???
The first film was a pleasant surprise and much better than expected.
but sly directed that movie whatever
yeah that CGI gore is bullshit. Whatever happened to squibs? Anyway the first one was a throwback to the Cannon cheap action films of the 80′s. I think West will make it look more like a post modern action flick. Yeah and get some real bad guys this time. Lance Henriksen would be awesome.
Decent choice by Sly, certainly not the best, but West can direct action, stunts, and weapon scenes and he probably saw eye to eye with Sly. Now Sly needs to focus on getting JCVD and The Rock in the sequel!
I also think Sly needs to do his best to get the great CLINT EASTWOOD to do a cameo where he chastises and talks trash to Sly, Bruce and Arnie (if Arnie is even in the sequel) That would be GREAT cinema!
The world is hungry for genuine action heroes, even if they are way past their prime. Why Hollywood is REFUSING to develop a slate of new action heroes, I’ll never understand.
I’m so sorry to say you r wrong about the first expendables that is a good movie right there how could u talk bad about the movie nice acroin nice acting.
