Lulz Security, the website that recently hacked into PBS.com to protest a Frontline documentary on WikiLeaks, says it has now hacked into Sony Pictures’ website, gaining access to account information and passwords to show how vulnerable the data is. From LulzSec’s website:
We recently broke into SonyPictures.com and compromised over 1,000,000 users’ personal information, including passwords, email addresses, home addresses, dates of birth, and all Sony opt-in data associated with their accounts. Among other things, we also compromised all admin details of Sony Pictures (including passwords) along with 75,000 “music codes” and 3.5 million “music coupons”.
What’s worse is that every bit of data we took wasn’t encrypted. Sony stored over 1,000,000 passwords of its customers in plaintext, which means it’s just a matter of taking it. This is disgraceful and insecure: they were asking for it.
If true (LulzSec says in its release “we invite anyone with the balls to check for themselves that what we say is true”), this is the latest hacking problem for Sony, which is still recovering from massive breaches to its PlayStation Network and Qriocity VOD service after a cyber-attack in April, for which Sony chief Howard Stringer belatedly apologized, adding to the PR nightmare.

Poor Sony just can’t seem to get a break. Massive layoffs, the tsunami and over a $3 billion dollars loss, and these hacking incidents…. What was they said about Humpty-Dumpty, or was that Howard Stringer?
Layoffs? Still not enough. All the bozos remain in power. The company has no digital strategy, no production strategy, no media convergence plan… absolutely clueless! The worst divisions are home entertainment and and digital. Somebody should go through there on senior management level with a scythe and clean up the mess.
Unfortunately, as is true with most of corporate America, the shite rises to the top. And true, the management at Sony is horrendous, but the execs at the top seem here to stay. They laid off a ton of the worker bees, yet they left the clueless management in place that put Sony in the toilet in the first place. Sony is an ass-backwards company, every division is screwed up with no direction or strategy.
You also are correct that they should go through there on a senior management level and start lopping off heads, but I don’t think that will happen until after they have already run Sony into the ground. From the way things are going though, they don’t have much further to go.
Greenlighting “How Do You Know” should have been a fireable offense.
Are we to believe that they did it just to prove a point or do they intend to sell the info & take the breach to a higher, more sinister level? Not clear here.
Lulz “security” is no doubt just one in a long list of anarchist communist groups trying to stifle American business & the free market system. They make me sick.
Sony is Japanese.
The recent cyberattacks against Sony started as retaliation for Sony suing “Geohot” (George Hotz) and 100 other hackers for “jailbreaking” PlayStation 3 consoles.

Yeah, these so called hackers claimed they were fighting Sony for all the gamers out there..
.. yet the first thing they did was steal credit card numbers and log in information of users..
These hackers are only looking out for themselves and they certainly don’t give a shit about gamers or anybody else.
Yeah, punishing Sony’s customers and leaking their private info. They’re really stickin it to the man and fighting for the people. **facepalm**
“Anarchist communists” might just be one of the most mind bottling stupid phrases to ever pass between willing lips.
Why isn’t this person dead?
Sony has a very weak IT.
I thought Sony was a technology and electronics company? Shouldn’t their IT be stronger? Oh, that’s right, they laid off most of the IT people.
Well, what goes around, comes around.
The hackers did not take any info, apparently they only uploaded a text file.
