EXCLUSIVE: Sony Pictures is moving forward on its much speculated Salt sequel. Kurt Wimmer has begun writing it for Angelina Jolie to reprise her role as Evelyn Salt, the CIA agent who spent the first movie running for her life after being outed as a Russian spy. The studio smartly left open a window for a possible sequel at the climax of the original, which was directed by Phillip Noyce. Now, Universal Pictures tried to draft a sequel of Wanted and it didn’t happen. This is different. Jolie wants to do to do the Salt sequel if it comes together right. I’m told that Wimmer has officially signed on and is working away. The original grossed around $300 million worldwide for Sony Pictures.

Was probably harder to do a “Wanted” sequel because Angie died in the first one. I’m not sure but I think that was the problem they had with “Gladitor” too.
Universal and direct Timur Bekmambetov spent a lot of time trying to get Jolie to do the sequel. They worked out a few different ways to bring her character back from the dead. A few months ago Mark Millar, who wrote the graphic novel Wanted’s based on, said that Jolie kept turning them down because she felt like dead is dead – especially since her character killed herself (and the other assassins) after finding out she’d been lied to about why they were assassinating people.
On another note – glad to see the Salt sequel might happen. I enjoyed the first movie. I especially like the fact that Salt didn’t use sex as her weapon of choice. How unHollywoodlike.
I honestly don’t get why they don’t make a wanted sequel — is it officially dead? James McAvoy is THE star of wanted and carried that movie and certainly if they wanted added insurance that they feel jolie provided, there are many female stars who could fill jolie’s shoes. — Scarlett johnannson, I know kristen stewart was in the mix, Megan fox. Wanted was one of the best movies of that year.
I agree, I want a sequel to Wanted. I really really liked that movie and it was a fun time at the movie when it came out.
James McAvoy may have had the most screen time in “Wanted”, but it wasn’t his name on the marquee that sold tickets – that was Angelina Jolie! A sequel would not be successful without her, though that hasn’t stopped studios from making sequels without the original stars. Those films usually bypass theaters and go right to DVD.
Are you guys nuts? She did NOT die at the end of the movie. I didn’t read the book so maybe that is what you are all referring to.
oh yeah baby…
Only if it’s as ridiculously outlandish as the first one!
YAY!! but happy not with Kurt Wimmer..
I respect Kurt Wimmer’s inspirations and all, but everything he has done just sticks out as amateurish. He obviously has a certain flair, but his plots always come across as far-fetched and the technology/science/politics in them seem really made up, without any credible research. It’s getting really hard to suspend my disbelief with each of his subsequent scripts.
Jolie basically wants her own James Bond-like franchise.
I think of Salt as the Female Jason Bourne more the female James Bond… i find it funny that this tiny skiny woman can pull of being a credible action movie star a field that has few candidate beside Jovovich and her evil dead franchise… one day they have to get a script where Jolie and Jovovich go head to head in the same action packed movie… i am pretty someone is thinking about it in Hollywood…
@ Teniba please tell me you didn’t just confuse The Evil Dead Franchise for the Resident Evil franchise….
I’m facepalming so hard over here I might give myself a bloody nose.
yep, bourne might be an even better comparison. I meant it more generically as Angelina wanting her own female spy franchise role. She’s already kind of done the female indiana jones type thing with Lara Croft.
I’d like to see Jason Bourne and salt team up on the same side!
This skinny woman can pull it off because it’s “not the size of the dog in the fight but the size of the fight in the dog” and she’s got a lot of fight in her…. and she’s fine as hell! I love AJ! Didn’t really love Salt (wasn’t nearly as smart as it should have been) but will see the sequel ’cause she’s so damn hot.
Yeah AJ and MJ going head-to-head is a great idea… that will never happen.
girl who loves AJ Said: “Didn’t really love Salt (wasn’t nearly as smart as it should have been) but will see the sequel ’cause she’s so damn hot”
That is normally why I don’t go to see AJ movies. Even though she is a better than average actress it always seems like the clips focus on her looks and sexiness. So I decided to see Salt because the trailers were all about an action flick that happened to star Jolie. I found it to be a good action movie taht had a couple of nice surprises. No where did they exploit her looks and in fact stayed completely away from it. No sexy/suggested clothing, no dilhouette sex scenes. It was all about the character, action, and plot. For that reason I am looking forward to the sequel. I hope they don’t screw it up.
Who asked for this?
I doubt it ever gets made.
Seriously, Salt was dry. Jolie looked like an ANDROID – posing, dead-eyed, no LIFE in her eyes…the uncanny valley.
The result of watching this (illegally, for free, of course) was a cold chill at the depiction of humanity in 21st Century cinema. I was also concerned for this actress’s health, as it was ridiculous to conceive of her hurrying up a flight of stairs easily, let along jump off a bridge or a freeway overpass, or whatever sub-Charlie’s Angels cartoon-like stunts took place in this lifeless junk.
Remember when Jolie was…salty?
Me, neither.
REBOOT!
I for 1 subliminally asked for this sequel, as i thought Angelina TOTALLY out Bonded and Bourned THE GUYS…$300 million is proof of the dynamite kick-ass pudding and then some….
Seriously.
Please get a different director this time. I’ve liked Noyce in the past, but he over directed SALT. It was a decent story and I liked the twists, but a better director could have made the film phenomenal.
Unless Noyce changes his mind, you’ll get your wish. When the Salt DVD came out with the director’s cut on it he said he felt like he’d done as much with the story as he wanted to and wouldn’t be directing a sequel if there was one.
If he felt he’d done as much with the story as possible, why would he allow the gratuitous “we’re-setting-up-a-sequel” ending?
Worse, that ending made zero sense. She goes on the run because no one would believe her? Wrong. It was publicly revealed that she faked the Russian president’s death, AND the U.S. president himself discovered that Liev Schreiber was the real Russian spy. So her story would 100% check out. Would’ve been better for the U. S. government to covertly hire her on as a double agent to hunt down the rest of the sleeper agents. Then you’d have a well-set-up female U.S. James Bond franchise instead of a contrived female-Bourne fugitive franchise.
I think I paid a little too close attention to this movie.
I wondered the same thing….that the President would be able to back her story and the faking of the Russian president’s death. Then figured perhaps the guy that let her get away was doing so on orders from his agency. Also, maybe they didn’t want the Russians to know they were on to Liev Schreiber’s character and therefore not realize they will be looking for others. The only one that knew for certain what went on in the bunker is the President ….. potential to be a cross between James Bond and Bourne. Could be why it was mentioned that guy was counter intelligence?
Explain(?)
Salt was a pretty decent action movie, but Wanted was an even better movie. Id rather have Jolie do Wanted 2 and blow peoples minds by finding a way to bring her character back for the sequel.
Call the sequel Shit, because the first one sucked.
Yes, she is super sexy and has an Oscar but when all is said and done she really does not have an impressive canon of work. It’s for reasons like this… taking these paycheck gigs. She’s got a lot of mouths to feed I guess. Pushing Tin, The Bone Collector, Original Sin, Taking Lives, Sky Captain, The Cradle of Life, Salt… nothing to write home about there. Oh yeah, and Salt 2.
mighty heart, changeling, good shphard etc… please don’t hate!!!
Playing God, Gone in 60 Seconds, Alexander and the Tourist. Check and mate. Hackers was cool though, I’ll give her that.
You cant blame an actress/actor how a movie turns out, just how well they played the character!
good for her! she acted in 3 good movies and too many pieces of junk
she’s only interested by the paychecks and she’s the biggest Hollywood female star
Amen.
Thank you so much for this quiet comment and reminder of the heartfelt and complex movies she has made.
I guess I am in the minority because I liked “Pushing Tin” and even though you didn’t mention it, “Life Or Something Like It” also.
Pushing Tin was great. Maybe the Bone Collector wasn’t great but her performance was. Showed a different side of her. Mighty Heart, Changeling, that movie where she and Winona Rider are in the loony bin. The model movie for HBO… Uh, Mr. and Mrs. Smith”?! The girl actually can act. And there isn’t a more beautiful face in movies. I’ve seen everything she does and even in a bad movie she is always interesting and fun to watch.
I hope this version ncorporates a female James Bond type too, beautiful, cool but deadly. Would love to see her dressed up a bit this time around…
It’s an exciting movie, she really did something amazing straight up action without being a vamp or ‘sexing’ it up. I hope the second can be as good. It actually was better the second time I watched it, eventhough I knew what was going to happen.
Love it!
It wasn’t a good treaty, and it won’t be a good sequel.
Awesome, Salt 2 should be good, but I hope they get a better director this time. It was a good movie, but mainly due to Angelina Jolie’s performance and presence on the screen. Noyce made it too old school. I beleive they already said they are going with a different director this time. I hope they choose someone good that can bring new concepts. Love Jolie’s performance.
Salt was smart they left the door open for a sequel, although I’m not a fan of Kurt Wimmer’s script writing, there were great action sequences and some dramatic moments that definately made the movie worth watching. She was great in it. Jolie already said she will not do Wanted 2 because she was killed off in the first one and it doesn’t make any sense to come back from the dead. But Timur Bekmambetov did a great job with that movie and is a much better director than Noyce. I hope they can get Timur or a better director on board for Salt 2. Will be interesting to see how this unfolds.
YES! I am so happy to hear this! I loved the first one and it totally needed a sequel. I hope this project gets made!
Wimmer got credit for SALT but he didn’t write it alone. Brian Helgeland worked on it followed by Steven Zaillian (and maybe Helgeland after). Not sure why they’re going to the original writer when his script strayed far from what they ended up with. I’d go so far as to call his EDWIN A. SALT script a comedy.
Salt did what it was supposed to do, establish a female answer to Bourne with a little Manchurian Candidate thrown in (funny that Liev Schreiber was in both movies…as the Candidate!).
Noyce did a fine job and like the above poster, I liked it better the second time around. And get off Kurt Wimmer’s back, he invented GUN-KATA for God’s sake.
And Wanted was garbage, any other time if a movie isn’t exactly like the comic book to the letter, you Comicon trolls are bitching, but somehow now, Wanted was great. Give me a break.
Can’t wait for the Salt II Agreement!
I had high expectations for “Salt” but it was a putrid piece of nonsense.
Lemme see if I can run through a quick plot summary for those who haven’t seen the movie.
Drunk Russian Spy walks into CIA Headquarters. Salt, a trusted CIA operative, is accused by the drunkard of also being a Russian spy. All of her friends and co-workers now hate Salt because of the rantings of the Drunk Russian Spy and try to capture her.
Salt runs away… cries a lot… misses her husband who is also somehow involved of this covert Russian secret spy organization. Husband, I think, dies somewhere along the way.
Salt fight back. Kills her CIA friend who is in actuality a Russian spy himself. Salt does the loopty loo on a guardrail and strangles her frenemy with her handcuffs.
Her friends are still mad at her because of the said loopty loo killing. They take her away on a helicopter. One of the CIA operatives lets her escape but not before brutally punching her a few times just to show her who’s boss.
Salt runs away in the woods. Now a fugitive from her own government… A sequel is promised and more hijinx to ensue…
John V. Karavitis I for one would look forward to a sequel to “Salt”. Although I thought that the plot was predictable, nevertheless, it was a well-crafted movie that was exciting and moved along well. Angelina Jolie showed herself to be a competent actress in “Salt”. John V. Karavitis
I believe the working title for the SALT sequel is PEPPER.
When i watched Salt On HBO or stars (whatever channel it was ) I regretted not seeing it on the big screen. i was surprised by how much i liked it. LoL
And in this one, Angelina wears a skin-tight suit and shoots guns!
Angelina should definitely fatten up a bit to do a sequel. She looked to thin and frail to be believable in Salt.
Philip Noyce has already confirmed that he is not returning for the sequel but is staying on as producer. He actually did what he could with the film. The thiness of the film is due to the rushed revision of the script wen Tom Cruise past. The film (or future franchise) has a range of potential. It can go anywhere and i am kind of glad that Philip Noyce is not directing. I could only dream if they decided to do J.J. Abrams, Christopher Nolan, Paul Greengrass, Matthew Vaughan, or David Fincher. Again this is a dream but these directors could take the store of Evelyn Salt to wonderful heights. I just hope they they have a justified script with a competent director.
I like the idea of JJ Abrams or Fincher… But Fincher seems to be on the short list for the cleopatra movie with Jolie as well!
