EXCLUSIVE: Sony Pictures is moving forward on its much speculated Salt sequel. Kurt Wimmer has begun writing it for Angelina Jolie to reprise her role as Evelyn Salt, the CIA agent who spent the first movie running for her life after being outed as a Russian spy. The studio smartly left open a window for a possible sequel at the climax of the original, which was directed by Phillip Noyce. Now, Universal Pictures tried to draft a sequel of Wanted and it didn’t happen. This is different. Jolie wants to do to do the Salt sequel if it comes together right. I’m told that Wimmer has officially signed on and is working away. The original grossed around $300 million worldwide for Sony Pictures.

This Comic-Con troll thought Wanted was crap and I noticed on other message boards like SuperHeroHype, AintItCoolNews etc the opinion was the same. Jolie fans are who thought that steaming pile was good.
As for Salt, I liked it. I just hope Jolie gains a few pounds for the sequel.
Nice! Now can you guys do the audience a favor and make this one to NOT suck like the last one?
Suggested title for sequel: PEPPER?
No no no! Salt was awesome. It was awesome. I am so happy they’re going ahead with a sequel. And also, am I missing something? When did she die at the end? The movie left her running thru the woods!
Waste of time and money. I remain unconvinced that an anorexic woman can take out scores of heavily muscled assassins.
I am so happy to hear this I hope Salt 2 will even be better than the first one.
Excellent to hear that this fine pulp thriller is getting the sequel that was hinted at. I’d be worried if Noyce didn’t come back though. He seems to have gotten better with age. I think his work here easily surpassed his work on the Clancy pictures. He made this movie what it was just as much as Jolie did. This was pretty much a pure action film and therefore its quality was almost solely a matter of the style the filmmakers put into it. Change that style and you change the movie.
Stuart Baird also has to get great credit as the co-editor of the film. With his reputation on action films like Superman the Movie, Lethal Weapon, Die Hard 2 and Casino Royale, he no doubt put together the action set pieces perfectly with no fancy, extraneous cutting a la Michael Bay. It didn’t look like a slick, soulless film where all the work was done in a computer or by a hyperactive editor. It had toughness and grit to it and the appearance of real stunt work.
Jolie continues to be one of the only women who can kill it in action roles. And if you look at box office figures, there isn’t ANY woman who’s ever come close to bringing in as much bank as her in action movies. I liked the Salt character better than her Wanted one so I’d much prefer a sequel to this. At least this character was a little more well-rounded and had a soft side to her. She doesn’t have to look like some super-pumped athlete to pull these roles off. She projects a psychological toughness that you just can’t get from very many actresses, and that’s been a staple of her persona since even her non-action roles in Gia or Girl Interrupted. You just can’t get that sense of danger from actresses like Halle Berry, Julia Roberts, Sandra Bullock, etc., no matter how hard they try. Angela Bassett, sure, but very few actresses can marry glamour to toughness like Jolie.
Angelina Jolie love all her movies;especially her action films. I enjoyed the Salt movies and I agree I enjoyed it the second time around. If you want a Bond feel to her can I make a suggestion..Paul Haggis. He is a terrific screenwriter and a very good director. Might get the best of both worlds.
SALT was amazing and if you get the BluRay you can watch 3 versions of the movie. I prefered the movie version but liked some of the different material as well. Its facinating to see what a different movie SALT would have been if the director chose an alternate ending.
SALT II sounds great and I hope it starts off where the last one ended. Maybe throw in her searching for her parents and other siblings? in Russia to protect them.
Why? Why do we need a sequel. The first movie was only decent but pretty underwhelming and not at all memorable.
I cannot wait for this to come out. I was skeptical about the first one so waited for the DVD; it was awesome non-stop action that kept you guessing the whole time. It really made me regret not seeing it in theaters. It also left me wanting a sequel, so I will definitely be going to see this when it comes out!
Why is the sequel to Wanted so hard. Just make a prequel. Fox’s story of how she became Fox. Jeez!
I would see Salt 2. The action and the pace of the movies was very propulsive. Her character was ferocious. I think Joe Wright could do a very good job on the sequel. But get another screenwriter. Has no one mentioned that the story made 0 sense? ZERO.
Kurt Wimmer is not only a brilliant guy but a really great guy who deserves the success. Congrats to him and all involved.
salt 2!!! yes!!! i loved the first one. i hope the second one is better.
is this a joke?!..lol
cleopatra salt to mark anthony: “not tonight, honey. i’m on my pyramid.” blam!
Salt 2, go Angie go!! *woo hoo*
go angelina!!! cant wait!!
The Blu-ray extended cut was my first viewing of the film since I didn’t see it theaters…wow, it was incredible! Seek this out if you haven’t seen it! (Spoilers) Although tragic, the husband’s alternate death scene in the extended version was beautifully edited, mixed, and acted. The extended cut also had a final tearful interrogation scene as well as a killer alternate ending.
First one had an okay setup, laughably bad third act. No interest in a sequel.
Her character did NOT die in the original movie…unless I missed something major. She was wonderful in this.
They’re talking about Wanted.
SEQUEL #1
Jolie is pursued by a CIA agent played by Denzel Washington. Title: Salt and Pepper
SEQUEL #2
Jolie is discovered in hiding as a coal minder in West Virginia.
Title: Salt Mines
It really bugs me when people rag on Angelina Jolie so much. She has done some bizarre things in her early days, but every teenager goes through that whole rebellious-growing-into-yourself phase. She had a hard life in her younger years and she did some pretty gritty stand out work like Foxfire, Girl Interrupted and Gia. She showed she could do action with the Lara Croft Franchise. She reminded me of The Great Silver Screen Stars in her role in the Tourist.
Her Humanitarian Work and Gay Rights Activism is admirable. Rescuing and adopting abandoned children and loving them the same as if they were her blood relatives. This woman has more backbone, grit, and guts combined with true talent, beauty and glamour. Even when people hate a film she is in, she usually gets critical acclaim for her role in the movie. I just think people need to stop judging her and maybe take a look at themselves, because it’s easy to sit at a computer and spout vitriol about someone else but it’s damn hard to look at your own life and admit you probably don’t have what it takes to do 1 tenth of the things she does. I love her as an actress and a humanitarian and a mother figure and symbol of female independence and strength. And I would damn well love to see a sequel to SALT and I would love it if they cast Milla Jovoich as her rival. Yeah AJ and MJ could do some amazing stuff as nemeses, with unlimited sequel opportunities since you’d want to root for them both. Anyway I felt i should say something because being judgemental about people you don’t really know isn’t right, and AJ has proved herself to be a force to be reckoned with, just as Madonna once succeeded to do.
You didn’t pay TOO close attention at all! I loved your insight into the film, and you are spot on about her story being believable. I happened to love this movie and watched it at least 3 times. I hope the sequel focuses on building a franchise to display Angelina’s talent as an action star.
I loved SALT.. and i do LOVE to watch SALT II…
