How is this for intriguing mix of creative auspices — filmmaker Spike Lee, former boxing champion Mike Tyson and Entourage creator Doug Ellin have come together to produce a drama series project for HBO, written by John Ridley and to be directed by Lee. The project, titled Da Brick, is described as a contemporary exploration of what it means to be a young, black man in supposedly post-racial America and is loosely inspired by aspects of Tyson’s youth. Is its set in current-day Newark, NJ, nicknamed “brick city.”
While the project is still in development, HBO has hired a casting director to explore casting choices for the lead, looking for young black actors who are also credible in the boxing ring.
Tyson appeared in a 2010 episode of Ellin’s HBO comedy series Entourage, playing himself. The original germ of an idea for Da Brick came out of a meeting the two had on the set of the veteran comedy, which was inspired by Mark Wahlberg’s early years in Hollywood. “That’s when Mike asked me, why don’t do with my life what we did with Mark’s life,” Ellin said. “The initial idea was ‘Entourage meets The Wire‘, an edgy story about an up-and-coming boxer and his crew that is much more dramatic than Entourage.” While it was not a series Ellin felt he would write, he and his producing partner Jim Lefkowitz decided to develop and produce it through their company. Lefkowitz brought in writer Ridley who, in turn, brought in Lee, with whom he had been developing a movie about the L.A. riots. Ellin, Lefkowitz, Ridley, Lee and Tyson are all executive producing Da Brick, with Tyson’s wife Lakiha Tyson and Azim Spicer, CEO of Las Vegas’ SpiceReel Prods., co-executive producing.
Both Ellin and Lee have long history at HBO. Ellin’s series Entourage returns for its eighth and final season next month. Under his deal at the pay cable network, Ellin wrote the comedy script 40, which has been picked up to pilot with Ed Burns on board to star. Da Brick marks Ellin’s first HBO project, which he is not writing, with him and Lefkowitz planning to do more of those as they expand their company’s development. Lee directed and produced the HBO New Orleans documentary When the Levees Broke and its follow-up, If God Is Willing and Da Creek Don’t Rise. Ellin is with WME, Lee and Ridley with CAA.

Let’s hope they find and hire a very talented writer/director to put this project together.
Hard to believe it could be more dramatic than ENTOURAGE, what was a comedy has become a straight-up melodrama with everyone crying and talking about their feelings.
Can’t wait!
Do we really need to see more of Mike Tyson? Even if it’s just inspired by his life, do we really need to see this? HBO, bring back James Gandolfini in a show, and I will be watching. I like the sound of him in the HBO Taxi series, and can’t wait to see him back on the small screen.
Tyson has a very compelling life story, particularly his youth… It helps explain some of his antics later on in life.
I think there’s potential for a great show here.
Anyone know how I can audition for the lead role or supporting role?
John Ridley: once a scab, always a scab. Amazed that Spike would work with a scab.
John Ridley has never been nor will ever be a scub!
Mike Tyson? Spike Lee? lol! Gotta be kiddin’ me with this. And didn’t Doug Ellin just offer Anthony Weiner a role on Entourage? Note to HBO _ you are better than to be in business with these creeps
How the f**k is Anthony Weiner a bigger “creep” (as you put it) than the entire cast and crew and every executive and advertiser involved with Entourage (which I love but is basically soft porn)? So you’re cool with actual porn star Sasha Gray doing porn on the show, but they can’t hire Anthony Weiner? Wow! Do you have idea how twisted and perverse your lack of perspective is? Maybe you should stop letting people like Bill O’Reilly do your thinking for you – oh wait, is he a “creep” as well? Or is it only okay when the person on the other end of the sexting/phone sex doesn’t want any part of it and sues for harassment?
And I’m not even going to get into your weird racist undertones suggesting that there’s something wrong with Spike Lee.
I was thinking something similar. Spike Lee a “creep”? And given the subject matter of most of HBOs self made shows not to mention Entourage in particular , which has people on playing themselves regularly, having Weiner on the show is well within what they’d do. WTF is “Megan” talking about?
i like the idea of Entourage meets The Wire. But also one of young Tyson’s entourage’s family has a funeral business and a few others are connected to the mafia. So it’s more like Entourage meets The Wire and The Sopranos in Six Feet Under.
If anybody knows about the black experience it’s Doug Elin.
Yup, that’s why he’s writing it…
Do you think maybe John Ridley, Spike Lee, and Mike Tyson might have that department covered, or are you just trying to look like a total douche on purpose?
Seriously? This is what you get from this article? Doug Ellin isn’t even writing the show. You don’t need to know about the black experience to produce a show about the black experience.
Great! The rapist is out to do one more buck! Well done, HBO!
Not bad business for an ex rapist.
Not interested
because America is so into boxing – what exactly happened to the FX boxing series?
Now if this was the story of a future UFC champ, I’d be down for it.
How’d The Fighter do? Or the 9 Rocky movies?
And America isn’t into ballerinas either thats why Black Swan tanked.
Oh it didn’t?
Go back to your Monster energy drink and looking for bouncer jobs on Craigslist. Don’t worry only 10 days til UFC 132!!
Whatever you write, I’ll read it!!!
Why does HBO hire this man to write anything? He’s so empty, so shallow. This show will be worse than Entourage because reading Elin writing about this will be trite and empty. And not because he’s white but because he’s a LOUSY writer.
READ the got dorn article before posting. JOHN RIDLEY is writing and showrunning, Ellin is producing, and Spike is directing.
“The project, titled Da Brick, is described as a contemporary exploration of what it means to be a young, black man in supposedly post-racial America and is loosely inspired by aspects of Tyson’s youth. Is its set in current-day Newark, NJ, nicknamed “brick city.” — So lets get Doug Ellin to produce! He can relate to this! lol
What I get from this is how much Sue Naegle doesn’t like women.
Doug Elin and Mike Tyson together? Ick. It’s the 21st century even if the Supreme Court and HBO don’t think so.
Finally, we’ll have the deep and nuanced explanation for how such a complex person as Tyson could take a bite Tyson from Holyfield’s ear.
The ignorance on the board is astounding. To say that Doug Elin can’t produce a project about black people is just as dumb as saying a black person cannot produce or direct a project about white people. Good writing and good casting is the key to everything. A good director can direct ANYTHING. It sounds like a fascinating project. I look forward to seeing what this team puts together.
I’m kvelling for Doug Ellin. This man knows black.
Who cares if Ellin is creating the show. I don’t care much for the storyline because the vast majority of black shows/films have a similar theme. Black kid grows up in rough neighborhood/ghetto, without parental guidance, finds love in gang culture then decides to get out by choose your creative: basketball, football, boxing, music.
I would like to have seen a story based on Spike Lee’s life as a black filmmaker. Maybe a black version of Super 8 with no monsters with a tone similar to the tv show Wonder Years.
If you believe Mikes a rapist, then I’m guessing you gain perspective on world events via Fox News and your idea of fine dining is Applebees! This sound like a great show…not only is Mike a great personality, but its obvious that through his life experiences and adversity he’s reached a level of self awareness that most will never touch! People that dont like and/or respect Mike and Spike, obviously are inbread with racism! PS, im a white 35 yr old business owner.
