EXCLUSIVE: Starz said today that due to significant production challenges, the network has decided not to exercise the option for subsequent seasons of its freshman original series Camelot. We’ve heard that scheduling conflicts with some of the actors were part of the problem for the Ireland-shot costume drama, which stars Joseph Feinnes, Jamie Campbell Bower and Eva Green and takes off on the King Arthur legend. GK-tv, Octagon Films and Take 5 Prods produced. Camelot wrapped its first season earlier this month by drawing 1.5 million total viewers, the second-highest viewership for the series behind its two-hour premiere, which set a network record for a series bow. It had been on a ratings upswing for its final few episodes.

It was mediocre at best and that’s the bottom line. But what I don’t understand is Starz and the level of executives they have. There isn’t a top flight development exec to be found! Carmi Zlotnik and his cast of children is tragic considering the fact that it’s a premium cable network and the world could be its oyster if they’d just hire people who know how to develop material and discern auspices. If you’ve ever been in a meeting with Carmi and Emily or Rob you’ll understand how frustrating it is not getting a clear point of view about what to do or what to bring them.
Hmm…interesting to say the least. From what I’ve seen on Deadline, Starz seems to be getting many offers/proposals but can’t get them going. Can you elaborate?
This was actually a good show. What a dumb move. Hope SHOWTIME or AMC renews it.
Hahahahaha! Great move by Starz, this show was terrible.
Game of Thrones and The Borgias get second seasons and Camelot gets canceled? Sounds about right and finally fitting.
Camelot stared into it’s tankard of ale, waiting for the tavern door to come crashing in like it did week after week. It was supposed to be a good show, with decent production values, some nice scenery. But then it all fell apart so fast. First they had to settle for Joseph Fiennes instead of Lord Voldemort himself, and then this Jamie Bower kid is hired as Arthur. Could they have hired anyone weaker-looking than this guy, Camelot thought sourly? The icing on the cake was that damned Game of Thrones. Camelot swallowed another mouthful of ale, and also some envy. That’s the great show I SHOULD be right now! Just then the stout door of the tavern flew open, and in strode Game of Thrones. Full of fire and passion, it filled the room as it strutted across the boards to Camelot. “How goes it old fellow, things getting sorted out with your little plotline that everybody and their kid already knows?” Games said with a booming laugh. “I’m not that old” Camelot replied weakly. “There’s really no need to be this way mate, it’s the viewers who have made their clear choice… let me buy you another”. Camelot choked back a flood of hot tears and fled the tavern, never to be seen again… and so it goes.
Cancelled STARZ
Pilot was great-maybe because they featured the awesome Genevieve in all her glory. I noticed once they stopped showing her nude, or other nudity, the storyline sucked, and so did this show. Arthur was of course terrible but Jos Finnes as Merlin is a show-stopper-yeah, stop showing the show! Good riddens to bad rubbish!
Ahh, Eva, you know we’ll follow you anywhere. While I agree Arthur was being played by a Brad Pitt wannabee, there were a lot of pluses about the show. Spectacular Ireland scenery, Eva Green, loved seeing the nurse get hers, Eva Green, Guinevere was well cast, Eva Green, story line for the last 3 shows was interesting, Eva Green….
Starz is the absolute worst. Not only can I not understand while anyone would develop with them, I can’t understand why any viewer would ever get invested in a show that will be cancelled after one year.
Hang it up Starz, you really suck.
I agree with the 1st comment on this list. I really couldnt accept your choice of Arthur. He didnt work from the beginning. Too young Too imature Too blonde not strong looking enough and after all that couldnt act. The concept however was a good one.
I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN THAT CAMELOT WAS TOO GOOD TO BE A HOT SERIES. I SAW THE SERIES WHEN I WENT TO THE LIBRARY. I HOPE THAT STARZ WILL RELEASE THE FULL SEASON OF CAMELOT ON DVD WITH ALL THE EXTRA. MAYBE ONE OF THESE DAY THERE WILL BE A MOVIE WHERE IT WILL TIES UP ALL THE LOOSE END. GOOD LUCK TO THE FUTURE YOUR TRULY CHARLES DAVID HASKELL
Yes. Good ! We want another show, raw like Spartacus! The edgy dialogue and the raw action. Something hard core and gangsta. Love period shows, they are the best! But you have to do them right!
Somebody put Eva Green in a hot film project…love her!!! Danny Boyle??? She’d be great in “Trance”…
They never built upon the first episode or two and expanded the realm in any interesting ways. Sure, they traveled about, but the world they created for Arthur continually felt “small”. Juxtaposing it to the epic-ness of Game of Thrones is an easy comparison, but even without it the plot never really moved anywhere interesting. I thought Merlin re-casting the story of the Lady in the Lake was interesting, but there were so few moments like that, where they would revisit the original storyline in a modern, realistic and interesting light.
And for F’s sake, how many times could Eva Green kill someone important to Arthur and suffer no vengeance?
Arthur himself didn’t steal the show, but whoever created his character deserves the lion’s share of the blame. There was almost nothing likable about his character. They managed to turn one of the great leaders of the realm into some idealistic, unrealistic, romantic sop of a hippy. Seriously, where was his spine? Everything was too “disney” about his values. There was no grit, nothing realistic. I’m sorry, but the real Arthur had to break a few peoples faces in to forge an empire. Sure, Arthur’s parents died, but they characters we never actually “knew” and had zero attachment to, beyond the obvious “we’re supposed to” because they were his parents.. I think this show was lacking in a lot of things, but one of my biggest complaints? Give me some GRIT. Make him seem REAL. Make it seem HARD, give it some resemblance to LIFE.
In the end, the show was too shallow to support.
I honestly didn’t know which show I liked better when GoT and Arthur first came on. Everything GoT did from the first episode ‘built’, it grew in the literal size of the scenes (as they take you on a tour of Westeros) and in the size of the political complications and intrigue and in the size of the character development. Arthur… just kind of floated through. There were, what, 2 major places where 99% of all the drama took place? Camelot, Morgan’s castle…. and… the plains in between both buildings? ..What else? A few unimportant villages they traveled through? The lake? The shore where the emo romance between Arthur and that blond haired chick first launched?
Pass. Not really that sad this show is gone.
You are all crazy. Jamie Campbell Bower is a nice looking guy, and an good actor who did what he could with the material he was given to work with. Give the kid a break already and lay off the personal insults. The young man doesn’t deserve all the trash talking he is getting from you people on here. Seriously.
The problem with him doing “what he could with the material he was given to work with”…is what he could do, wasn’t good enough. You may like him but throughout all the comment boards I’ve looked through those who do like him are in a serious minority….which means, he…as an actor, failed to convince us of him as Arthur.
Now, an actor with REAL acting chops would find a way to get the viewer to connect with him/her, it’s not just up to the writers & directors to do that.
The writing for Merlin’s character wasn’t hot either…yet I still FELT some pity for Merlin’s addiction to magic, I still HATED Morgan (because you were supposed to), I still felt really bad for Leontes but I never felt any sympathy or empathy towards Arthur…or Guenevere for that matter. He appeared like he felt awkward playing the character and Tamsin as Guenevere felt plastic. I felt no chemistry between them, I felt NOTHING for them.
It seems that the majority of those who saw this show felt the same way. Inevitably there will be those who connected with the show…but there weren’t enough of you to save it.
Jamie Campbell Bower is probably kind to dogs and nice to his mother. This isn’t a referendum on his worth as a human being. But he was a truly lousy King Arthur.
Sad to see the show go as it got better at the end. I also think that claire forlani did an amazing job when given the right material. But i have to agree, i expected it to be grittier as well
This is sad news. It was a very entertaining show. I was looking forward for a next season, what will happen next. All the actors played their part very well. I hope another network chooses to continue this show.
I hope to see Tamsin Egerton on other shows and in more movies. She is definitely pleasant to the eyes.
Was there really a scheduling conflict for the principal actors for the second season? If so, someone at STARZ should be fired, if not sued, for not tying them up before they shot the first season. I would like to know the name of the person who created this monumental screw up.
Who knows? I do know this show cost more than any other on the air at $70 million total for 10 episodes and it had 6 Executive Producers, whereas others usually have no more than 2 Executive Producers….it was seriously top-heavy.
Game of Thrones in comparison only had 2 for example and it had a budget of $50 million for their 10 episodes….a much larger cast and more on-site filming locations.
Makes you wonder what Camelots money was spent on…or who pocketed it.
This show was great and should air a second season if it doesn’t it will we a pitiful loss of viewers.
I am very disheartened by this news. I only just became a fan of the show and the last episode left you wanting to see more.
Yes the character of Arthur developed slowly but that is the point isn’t it? He was a boy who didn’t know he was king and had to learn what to do in this new element. You see him grow as a character and a king.
The only part where I think they went wrong was to kill off Igraine and have Merlin leave that was just ignorant on their part. They could have developed Igraine and Merlins’ relationship. They could have also developed the instance with Merlin and Morgan into having produced a child. Instead they have Morgan conceal herself to have a child by her brother and then cancel the show.
Starz I am very disappointed in you!
this tv show was great, it had a good story to it unlike most other tv shows.the only bad part about it was that my friends didnt like the adult contents, but the rest was awsome.
the tv show was great it had a good story to it and most of the actors looked like profeshinals, the only actor that wasnt good was the king arther.this tv show was OK but i recomened the tv show MERLIN,it satisfied all my needs for a good king arther story.
I think camelot was a great show, so was spartcus. I didn’t have stars so I went to my girlfriends just too watch it lol but every body commented about it in my band but I don’t care I loved Camelot, Guinevere was a really beautiful performer!
