Reports about Universal’s dating of the John Le Carre adaptation Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy on November 18 have blown out of proportion about what occurred. Reports make it sound like the movie changed hands. It hasn’t, at all. Universal-owned Focus Features will put the picture out, something that was a possibility way back when Deadline revealed that the picture was acquired as one of the hottest titles at the Berlin Film Festival. It feels more like a Focus film. But there was no fresh acquisition, and Universal hasn’t stepped away from the film. It’s the same company. The Tomas Alfredson-directed film stars Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Tom Hardy, Mark Strong and Ciaran Hinds.

Its better if Focus put this out instead of Universal since its more in their wheel house to release great films like this. Hope Focus can do a good job marketing this and hope this becomes a big hit.
hey, about a remake of The Godfather or The Sopranos?
seriously, the original BBC 7 hour series of “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” is the greatest TV show of all time. I wish the BBC would give the original version the ‘classic re-release’ treatment, complete with deleted scenes, interviews with talent and LeCarre, as well as interviews with real members of MI5 and MI6.
alfredson made one of the best movies of the last five years. the guy is innocent until proven guilty.
ok, i looked up Alfredson and am more confused than ever.
This remake is Tomas Alfredson’s first English language film ever. How does one get to direct the greatest spy story of all time as one’s first English language film?
Curious if a lot of the top tier directors pass on this project? Did they find it daunting to remake the 1978 series, which is the best adaptation of any work by the greatest spy novelist of the 20th Century. Did you know that LeCarre invented terms like moles, lamplighters, scalphunters, and the Circus? The terms became so pervasive that the secret services began using them too.
How does one condense a 7 hour miniseries into a single feature length film? Very difficultly.
a bit baffled by this comment – clearly the guy is a masterful director! Imagine if someone asked the same thing of his compatriot Ingmar Bergman.
Fingers crossed that this is Oldman’s year.
This is one of my most anticipated films of the year. Great director, great novel and a dynamite cast. Can’t wait to see Oldman’s take on Smiley.
Looking forward to seeing Benedict Cumberbatch in this film
Yes, Benedict is great in Sherlock, another series that we in the USA enjoyed – if we got to see it.
The cast of the Tinker Tailor reminds me of “The Great Escape” because it looks to be THE top best UK dramatic actors (excluding Sir Ben and Ray Winstone).
Pssst… how soon before Hollwood remakes “The Great Escape” with Pitt, Clooney, Daniel Craig and Liam Neeson?
is he one of those cunning Cumberbatches of Cumberland County?
I don’t envy Gary Oldman’s decision to follow Alec Guinness’s dead-on characterization of George Smiley. Also, I can’t wait to see Benedict Cumberbatch as Peter Guillam, another one of my favorite characters from the mini-series. (Frankly, I plan to see the movie just to see Benedict, who I firmly believe is this generation’s Daniel Day-Lewis!)
Another Benedict fan here. Many movie fans may know the others in the cast but not sure who he is which means he’ll be the one being talked about after they see him. (and great to see Gary O. in this role.).
For people who didn’t see “Sherlock” you should find the DVD and either buy it or rent it. This is a truely great actor who has become one of the few “great” Sherlock Holmes. Bringing it into “today” while not losing any of the canon and true quality that was the written Sherlock has been amazing.
Benedict got out of this world reviews in “Frankenstein” on the stage recently. He should be seen in “Hawking” and the semi-documentary “Van Gogh” BBC has not put it on DVD but can be seen on the Internet, as is Hawking and other things he has done – including comedy. This isn’t one of the best actors of his generation – but one of the Best Ever.
