UPDATED: In the second high-profile drama off-network sale this year following TNT’s recent acquisition of Hawaii Five-0, TNT has picked up the rights to ABC’s crime dramedy Castle, which is heading into its fourth season in the fall. The first 2 seasons of series starring Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic will begin airing on TNT in the summer 2012 and will also be available online through TV Everywhere. The license fee for Castle, sold by Disney-ABC Domestic TV, is said to be in the $1.5 million per episode range, less than what TNT recently agreed to pay for CBS’ freshman Hawaii Five-0, just north of $2 million. (Ironically, Castle started beating Hawaii in the ratings towards the end of the season as the two shows faced off in the Monday 10 PM slot.). In 2009, TNT also shelled out a little over $2 million an episode for CBS’ The Mentalist, which recently launched in the 7-9 PM slot on the cable network. But I hear that the deals for The Mentalist and Hawaii are exclusive, while the Castle pact is non-exclusive, allowing ABC to add to its off-network haul with a weekend broadcast syndication sale. With its setup, a handsome, quirky male consultant paired with a hot, no-nonsense female detective, The Mentalist and Castle seem like good potential companions. They also both look more like USA, not TNT shows, but they may be too close to USA’s own brand of light dramas with quirky central characters. Castle centers on Richard Castle (Fillion) – a famous mystery novelist and divorced father with a writers block who found inspiration in NYPD Detective Kate Beckett (Katic), a bright and aggressive homicide detective. While not a breakout hit, Castle has been slowly but steadily building in the ratings and enjoys strong fan following.

I don’t really get this, USA is a much better channel for Castle.
Well, Castle crashed Hawaii 50 in the ratings at the end of the season. Especially on the Finale. So TNT has been smart getting in .
The show is well writen and acted and doesn’t need to use shirtless cheap scenes trying to get viewers.
Another Michael McDonald hit finds it’s way to syndication! Best exec in town. Someone hire this guy to run a network!!!
Often times the work of a particularly good studio and network exec is overlooked. The studio literally carries the writer through the development process and is often times helped by a non-writing producer who works with the writers in shaping the material, preparing the pitches and creatively moving the project forward. It’s nice that somebody gave a shout out Michael whose passion for his work helped launched a number of series for abc.
Season 1 was only 10 episodes, so this acquisition is only for 34 epis. Two reasons why Castle gained steam on H50: 1)DWTS lead-in and 2) the loss of TAHM from CBS Monday line-up. Castle has not fared well without DWTS. Will be interesting to see how it does on TNT.
Excuses for Hawaii 50. The show is plain bad. It had already lost a lot of viewers before THM went on reruns.
Hawaii 5-0 will make CBS loads of money. The 3 guys are fun to watch.
TNT is paying a lot of money for shows that just aren’t delivering that big of numbers on their respective networks. The Mentalist has just premiered on TNT and the numbers are soft. That does not bode well for a show like Castle which skews so heavily female. Weird buy. Nice to be in cable where you can spend money like drunken sailors and pass along the cost to the your local cable subscriber who has no choice but to eat the cost.
Maybe too close to USA shows? It was a running gag on Psych for at least a whole season about how much the Mentalist was ripping them off.
Castle does get a bump from DWTS, but does around a 2.5 18/49 demo without it, which is pretty good for ABC and even more so in the 10pm timeslot. The only time it dips below a 2.5 is during the holiday season when new episodes are sandwiched between repeats and all other shows are simularly affected including H5O. I find it funny that the two shows many fans bicker about ratings commparisons are bought in syndication by the same network.Really like Castle, but H5O, which I was really looking forward too, did not impress me much.
Weird buy or not-yes, USA seems like a better fit but USA lineup is getting crowded. Being on USA (Modern Family coming on board soon) MAY have given CASTLE a shorter life.
On TNT, CASTLE may be given more of a chance to bring in an audience.
Either way, YEAH!!!!
