When Deadline broke the story that Relativity Media had won an auction for Act of Valor by paying a $13 million minimum guarantee and $30 million P&A commitment for a Navy SEAL mission movie, we told you the film would open President’s Day. Relativity has just made the date official. Here’s the release:
(Beverly Hills, CA) June 23, 2011 – Relativity Media announced today that it will kick-off President’s Day weekend in 2012 by releasing its groundbreaking, intense, action-thriller Act of Valor, which showcases an elite group of active duty Navy SEALs in a fictionalized composite of actual events, in North America on February 17th. The studio recently acquired worldwide rights to market and distribute the film from the Bandito Brothers’. The film is set for a wide release.
The film is directed by ex-stuntmen and documentary filmmakers/commercial directors Mike “Mouse” McCoy (Dust to Glory) and Scott Waugh (Step Into Liquid) and written by Kurt Johnstad (300). Costarring are Roselyn Sanchez (Rush Hour 2) and Emilio Rivera (Traffic).
Act of Valor follows a Navy SEAL squad on a covert mission to recover a kidnapped CIA agent, and in the process takes down a complex web of terrorist cells determined to strike America at all costs. The filmmakers had unprecedented Naval access resulting in high-octane combat sequences and never-before-seen military operation scenes which are composited from actual events in the lives of the men appearing in the film and their comrades.
McCoy and Waugh are producing for Bandito Brothers and the company’s COO Max Leitman is executive producer. Legendary Pictures Chairman and CEO Thomas Tull, who is personally an investor in Bandito, executive produced along with Jason Clark (Monster House).

$13 is too much for that movie. Their break even point is astronomical with that kind of MG.
These people are crazy! They are paying top dollar for “dark horse” of a movie, hoping to cover their losses on the rest of their staff. They will never recoup and they do not care… It is interesting, how Elliot will write off its $400+ million loss on Relativity “experiments”. Hopefully, one day FBI and IRS will get on this and will bring it all to the light. They are destroying The Industry, greedy, irresponsible bustards!!!
looks like Ryan’s going up against Universal’s LONE SURVIVOR Navy Seals movie which Peter Berg is directing…another battle to the box office ala Snow White…
7 months to wide release? Is that even possible?
Navy SEALs can do anything. Just not so sure about the film…
America! Fuck Yeah! Get some! Kill every Arab you see!
That’s the tagline, right?
Ahhhh, here we go. Let the Ryan bashing begin.
First, ACT OF VALOR won’t “go up against” Berg’s movie. They’re going to be releases two freakin’ years apart. “You know honey, I saw a war movie 20 months ago, I’m not sure I’m in the mood for another.”
Second, seems to be this is EXACTLY the sort of bet Relativity should be taking. A risk? Sure. But that’s the movie business. In this case, the film is shot and cut and screenable. The Relativity guys looked at it and decided that with the right marketing, they could turn a little movie into a big hit.
Are they right? Only time will tell. Might be a disaster. Might make a $100m. But as gambles go, I’d prefer to see this company concentrate on smart acquisitions and distribution. Financing original pics from scratch? Now THAT’S a gamble. This seems… dare I say… A smart, responsible, adult decision by Ryan.
Of course, those that hate him will hate everything he does. And scream bullshit about investigations and the IRS. I’ve never entirely understood the venom… Or how it benefits our community. But such is life.
In this case, Bandito Brothers risked their own money on a passion project. Ryan stepped in to offer them a healthy profit and a healthier marketing spend. Aren’t we supposed to be happy about this? Movies are getting made, and sold, and distributed. Winning!
Right. It’s Hollywood. We don’t do happy.
Well hello again Ryan (aka ProducerGuy)! Glad you could join us. A comments thread about relativity wouldnt be the same without you!
Let me get this straight. A movie that actually portrays the military in an extremely positive light. This movie will put butts in seats. Forget liberal ramblings. This will sell. Just consider the gamer demographic, let alone any patriotic pro-military consumer.
to all the naysayers…you’re gonna be eating your words cuz the initial word from viewers who have attended private screenings is this movie is gonna make a killing at the box office.
Hopefully with real SEALs in the action scenes all the tactics and language will be spot on… I’m looking forward to this and consider it a movie length episode of the Unit…
