EXCLUSIVE: Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions are negotiating with Tom Cruise to star this fall in One Shot, a thriller based on the Lee Child book series about former military policeman-turned-drifter Jack Reacher. Christopher McQuarrie will direct his script. The talks going on right now is for Cruise to make the movie before he stars in the Joseph Kosinski-directed Oblivion at Universal, which starts in January.
Making a Cruise deal is always tricky, and if the One Shot deal takes awhile to come together, it would happen after Oblivion shoots next year. Paramount will co-finance the film with Skydance Productions, whose principal David Ellison also co-financed Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol.
Fans of the Reacher book will have to absorb this development, because Cruise is very different physically from the bruising tough guy who has created mayhem over 15 bestselling novels that have sold 40 million copies. In the books, Reacher is 6’5,” about 250 pounds, and when you are on the business end of his clenched fists, you are most likely going to be spitting out teeth and getting fitted for a cast or two. Cruise has always been interested in the Reacher series. In fact, when he and Paula Wagner were partners at C/W, they optioned the book five years ago. Paramount has been developing ever since, but this is the closest that the Reacher franchise has to becoming a reality after years in development. So what if he’s not as tall and beefy as Reacher? I’m told that the author himself is excited about Cruise playing the role, that Cruise personifies the qualities Reacher displays in the books. As for Reacher’s hulking physical size, Child wasn’t locked into an oversized actor (one reason the film took so long to get off the ground), and it was more about establishing an intimidating presence.
“Reacher’s size in the books is a metaphor for an unstoppable force, which Cruise portrays in his own way,” Child said when he threw his support behind the move.
Child’s prose is very spare and blunt and Reacher is a no-frills guy. He drifts around the country, carrying nothing more than a toothbrush, the clothes on his back, his passport and access to his military pension. He finds his way into all kinds of misadventures but usually winds up using his brawn and his brains from years of military experience to solve conspiracies for underdogs. In One Shot, Reacher investigates a case in which a lone sniper murders five victims before being captured. Reacher discovers it’s more than a simple open-and-shut case. Cruise and McQuarrie are regular collaborators. They did Valkyrie, and McQuarrie did some script work on Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol, and he also did early script work on The Tourist when Cruise was going to be the film’s star.
The novel is set in the Midwest, but the film will shoot in Pittsburgh, I’m told.
Don Granger and Cruise will produce through Mutual Film Company and C/W Productions. Skydance’s Ellison and Dana Goldberg are producing as is Gary Levinsohn and Wagner. Josh Olson wrote an earlier draft before McQuarrie came aboard. McQuarrie’s manager, Ken Kamins of Key Creatives, is exec producer. Cruise is repped by CAA and so is McQuarrie, whose lawyer is David Fox.

Lee Child has been paid every year on the option and they just renewed it at the end of last year. A great Oscar winning (2x) producer reached out and they said we just got renewed again… Yes, Tom Cruise has something as Collateral was good, but Reacher he isn’t. The dry no nonsense take no shit, reach out and snap a few fingers off of a bad guy or even a good guys hand Reacher he isn’t.
Someone above said Jackman and yes he fits, but Cruise messy in looks, style and attitude doesn’t. Think a few years younger Alec Baldwin, Gerard Butler or dare it be said a mean Vince Vaughn. Lee Child is a great great great writer his banter is the Woody Allen of ass kicking and he has waited a long time to see Reacher come to life, but unless his agent gets his head out of his ass Reacher will do what he has never done, die…
Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher, this has to be a joke. I read all the novels, if he plays Reacher it would destroy the novels for me. i could never read another one again. Cruise would kill it for me just like Mission Impossible
Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher is blasphemy.
So wrong, So disappointed. Cruise as Reacher, worst casting choice ever. As a huge fan of the books and what Reacher represents, this could ruin it all. NO WAY I could ever read another book with the image of Cruise in my head. Would never see these films. Hope this falls through. Take a look at Kevin Durand, that’s Reacher !
Not having read the books perhaps I should not even be making a comment, but from the other comments it sounds like a perfect part for Mickey Rourke. in any case Tom Cruise is an absurd choice. When is Hollywood going to get the message that the rest of the country no longer uses the words—STRONG—RUGGED—TOUGH—–IMPOSING—-THICK-FISTED to describe Tom Cruise. Obviously Mr. cruise must have an inflated impression of himself, otherwise he would not be investing his own money in this ill-fated project.
Reacher is in his thirties and 6’5″ and big; Mickey Rourke would have been perfect 20 years ago but with this mug of today. Reacher and Marv have similar “known for their size and badassedness” vibes, but Reacher is also a former military cop and puzzle solver, like a super smart Marv.
I like Tom Cruise, so I’m no “hater”, but geez. No. He’s not Jack Reacher, and it’s not just about the size. He is just completely unsuited in every way to play this character. Glad Child is happy, but I won’t be seeing this movie; I have my own idea of Jack Reacher, and he bears no resemblance whatsoever to toothy, tiny Tom Cruise.
This makes me very sad. I’ve read 12 of the 14 Jack Reacher novels, and if they choose a solid, slightly known 6’5″, 250 pound actor then the studio will have themselves a franchise on their hands. The actor they choose with become a huge star and the world will look forward to the continuing series of films that will be released. It is a star making part…NOT a part for a star.
If Tom Cruise plays the part, the film will be a mildy successful one-off, but there will be no more clamoring for the Jack Reacher character because after 25 years…Tom Cruise is Tom Cruise. He’ll never be Jack Reacher the way an unknown or someone slightly known can be.
If Lee Child wants for his laconic, stoic, physically imposing and highly intelligent Jack Reacher to go down in film history…he’s go to cast an unknown. Then we may well get 7 -10 films! But if he wants, Tom Cruise…well then be careful what you wish for because millions of jack Reacher fans won’t bother to show up.
Well said, Robert. These are the arguments that should make sense to the studio.
With Cruise, this will definitely be a “one shot” film. There are dozens of good actors who are not very well-known who would be great as Reacher: Ray Stevenson (maybe too old), Ben Browder, Armie Hammer almost ANYone other than Tom Cruise. I’d go for Liam Neeson, who could do it, but he wouldn’t make a franchise.
I honestly cannot think of a worst choice to play Jack Reacher. Seriously, do these people read the books.
Casting Angelina Jolie would be a closer match than Tom Cruise and she isn’t even the right sex.
Tom is awesome…sure it will be great
Are these comments serious? Really? Descriptions of a character in a book is gospel? COME ON! will someone get a creative grip? A writer wrote 6’5″ so that’s what the actor has to be??? are you serious??? It’s like someone saying I only date blondes. But when a brunette comes walking into his life and blows him away, literally, suddenly brunettes aren’t so bad. Please. Wake up, people. Open your narrow mindedness. Think about essence. Not description. Even what’s her name who wrote Interview with vampire retracted her initial reluctance to Cruise and said he was great. As far as the other fanatic freaks who have no lives than to live and die by the descriptions of a fictional character in a fictional book, get a life! PLEASE!
Ed, have you read any of the books? From your comments I seriously doubt it. The character’s height is much less important than the fact that he’s a physically imposing presence which is essential to the aura of the character. If they went with a 5’10″ actor, at the very least he should look physically imposing, a trait never attributed to Tom Cruise. Whether as an all-state football player (All the Right Moves), psycho hit-man (Collateral), or super spy (Mission Impossible), etc… I don’t think most people are questioning Tom Cruise’s acting ability, but true fans of the Jack Reacher franchise are going to have a problem with this.
You’re the one who needs to get a life for getting worked up about something you clearly have no knowledge about. And for the record, “what’s her name” is Anne Rice, and your blond/brunette metaphor is laughable!
if his size is no big thing, why is his immense height, weight and natural strength always stated in every book and several blurbs. His size and strength is who he is, its what makes him attractive and so capable as a character, he doesn’t kill people by looking at them menacingly ( i aggree its what gives him his badass and “dont mess with me” attitude) but he kills people by breaking their necks or beating the living shit out of them because he is so big and powerful. Many books tell of how when he was smaller he won fights as kid because he was bigger than everyone else, not by looking at them menacingly… im not disagreeing with you i just think his physique and power is just as important as his attitude.
People comment on size, but they are also said something that you’ve chosen to ignore. Size is only ONE of the issues we fans have a problem with. The problem is Tom Cruise at this point in his career is he is unable to become the character… Tom Cruise plays Tom Cruise. He was able to get a little bit away from that when he was in Collateral (good movie, btw), but that was because no one had any preconceived notion of who Vincent was… he was an unknown to all of the audience.
Not so with Jack Reacher who has 40+ million fans. That’s a lot of people who have invested time into the books. Why wouldn’t we be angry? We get to see Tom Cruise playing Tom Cruise attempting to be Jack Reacher. What a colossal disappointment.
It would not have taken much work on the part of the studio to find a decent fit. Hugh Jackman. Josh Holloway, even though he’s a bit young, he’s still a good fit. My choice is Tahmoh Penikett who played Agent Ballard on the Dollhouse and Lt. Karl “Helo” Agathon on Battlestar Galactica. I’m sure the guy would have dropped anything to play Reacher. So many better choices.
This is nothing but vanity on Cruise’s part. He should exec produce, step aside and let someone more appropriate play Reacher.
Cruise is simply a terrible choice for Reacher. The End.
Like someone mentioned earlier, Collateral anybody?
Cruise’s best role was him menacing with a hell of presence that just owned the screen for two hours.
Give him a chance. At least you Reacher fans are getting a film. Finally.
Jack Reacher is not close to Cruise’s character in Collateral. This comparison is not valid.
Jack Reacher is like the Fugitive except he is running somewhat from himself. Jack always seems to end up some where (like the Fugitive) where somebody needs his help, and that often places him in the line of ire doing his “MP” work to solve the mystery and dole out punishment to those who cross his path to “justice”….and…ten Jack is on the road again.
Truly, the Collateral performance by Cruise was good…but, it does not make him Jack Reacher.
Of all the suggestions…Liev Shreiber best fits the bill so far.
The point is not that Cruise will play Jack Reacher the same way he played Vincent in “Collateral”. The point is that Cruise can act.
Oh, and to everyone clamoring for Liev Schreiber to be cast as Jack Reacher, speaking only for myself, I find Liev Schreiber to be about as intimidating as an unopened can of baked beans.
Reacher’s size and height is everything about the character; it’s beyond canon, it’s what makes Reacher Reacher. Babbling about Collateral just shows you haven’t read the books.
But hey it’s great to piss off the fans who bought those 40 millions books and create another vanity project for Cruise.
I read a Jack Reacher novel, think it was called THE PERSUADER, and if anything it persuaded me never to touch another book by Lee Child. What a snooze-fest.
I heard awhile ago how Cruise kept renewing options on these novels, maybe in the hope of casting himself for a transition to middle-age action roles.
His casting is probably a bad move, if for no reason than fans of the books of will not accept him and keep dwelling on the height thing. So you’d prefer Dolph Lundgren? What on earth does the author or the writer-director know?
I seem to recall Anne Rice had problems with casting Cruise as Lestat, claiming he was totally wrong for the part. Then she took out a retraction in VARIETY praising his performance.
“I seem to recall Anne Rice had problems with casting Cruise as Lestat, claiming he was totally wrong for the part. Then she took out a retraction in VARIETY praising his performance.”
I think she took out a retraction praising the “choice” of Cruise (before actual filming) right after the check cleared.
I don’t get the Cruise hate.
Item 1) Mission Impossible/ II/ III. Look, you’re right. He is a midget – who does convincing action.
Item 2)Collateral – man can do menace. Played against type. I bought it. Who didn’t?
3) Last Samurai – a man of honour. Just like Jack Reacher.
Reacher’s size is a fact of the novels, but it’s not a story point. He is tough, and he gets the job done. He could use this size, or he could use superiour training, and heart. Casting Cruise as opposed to someone 6’5″ allows for something more: the problem with someone 6’5″ and 250lb is that he, on screen, will come across as a bully. Unless you’re into Arnold territory, where you have to find people bigger than he to populate the bad guy spots.
I can see Cruise in the role, and there’s such a skill set involved, between Cruise, Wagner and McQuarrie, I’m quite looking foward to it.
Yes, Reacher comes off as a bully when people first see him, which is why he uses his tough looks as a leverage and not a liability. If you’d read the books you’d know Reacher being built like a hulk is as much a part of Reacher as his folding toothbrush.
There is no way that Reacher Creatures love the big badass with a mind like steel trap for 12 years and 14 books and then settle for a perky movie star in lifts as the film’s star. Ain’t gonna happen. This ain’t Collateral or Lestat, this is Reacher you’re talking about.
I cannot picture Tom Cruise as Reacher… mostly because of his stature but also because he just not ‘fit’ the character of Reacher. I like the suggestions of Kevin Durand, Liev Schreiber even Gerard Butler… but Tom Cruise is just wrong. I agree that there can be some creativity in the casting, it doesnt have to be exactly like the book but Tom Cruise isnt even close. How can he play a character that stands out because of his physical presence, is physically stronger/faster than a lot of his opponents etc??? Yes Cruise can play menacing but that is only part of Reacher.
Basically Tom Cruise as Reacher does not compute
John V. Karavitis Sorry, in my eyes, Dolph Lundgren would be a better choice, just for the physical aspect, but also for the way his intensity makes you think that there’s a brain underneath all those muscles. But would he be too old? What about “The Rock” or Cena, the guy who played “The Marine”? They don’t come across as the P.I. type, and perhaps they are “too” physical. Besides, with Tom Cruise having optioned this fiction, it’s not like he’ll be worried about finding the “right” actor. So goes Hollywood, my friends. John V. Karavitis.
Tom Cruise? As what? Reacher in the Lollipop Guild?
Liev Schrieber? Possibly Liam Neeson? 10 years ago absolutely.
Gerard Butler? Possibly
Ray Stevenson? Yes, without a doubt. This would be a franchise making role.
Not Cruise, no way.
This will ruin the Reacher books for me.
They should have cast either Dwayne Johnson or Michael Clarke Duncan as Reacher.
Now that would have been great casting and totally believable.
The Jack Reacher character is physically imposing, but not a muscle-bound person.
John V. Karavitis Interesting article. I’ve never heard of this author or even the character protrayed in it. A 6’5″ P.I. who likes to use his fists? Wow. So…. “original”. Anyway, A-List actors (and we do include Tom Cruise in thie list, yes?) are always running around trying to option this and that. But I agee with the general tenor at the end of the article, if the character is really a 6’5″ 250 pound behemoth with an attitude, then Tom Cruise will either need really big platform shoes or they will have to take artistic license and monkey around with the script a bit (which I absolutely hate when people do that to fiction that I have learned to love). Anyway, I’m glad I came across this article, I now have another fiction author on my list to add to my ereader. I wish Tom Cruise well on this latest endeavor. John V. Karavitis
Collateral is exactly the kinda performance Cruise needs to give for this.
…Bruce Willis, Clint Eastwood, or George Clooney as Jack Reacher? Your thoughts please!
You DO realize that Clint Eastwood is 81? What an indictment on Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher, when people start recommending octogenarians as an alternative!
Bruce Willis, too old (56), too small, can’t act. George Clooney…no. What have you seen him in that suggests he woud be good as Reacher? Besides, he’s also short. And 50.
Reacher is 37 when the books begin.
No offense but obviously you have not read any of the Reacher series. Jack Reacher is physically imposing.
The image I get of the Reacher character is a tall, lean cowboy type.
Clint Eastwood? You might as well cast Pee Wee Herman
The writer only approved of Cruise because Cruise can still sell tickets even if his star is fading.
Brad Pitt, Chris Hemsworth, Sam Worthington and Daniel Craig also can sell tickets and are big enough to play Reacher.
40 million Jack Reacher/Lee Child fans WILL NOT go to any such asinine farce!
Paramount just say NO to Cruise — franchise will be dead before it starts.
Ben Browder IS Reacher
This is insane! As a long time fan of Lee Child and the Jack Reacher novels, I can’t believe any sane casting director would imagine Cruise as Reacher. He’s like a yappy Jack Russell terrier compared to the iconic loner Child pens. Not to mention he’s at least a foot too short, 100 lbs too light, and carries no menace other than fearsome scowl.
Cruise is not a bad actor, but he is the WRONG actor for this role.
doesn’t he have enough money to retire yet ? YUCK
Two words: BEN BROWDER. Casting Cruise in this would be a joke. Cast someone credible, please!
