EXCLUSIVE: Jason Blum will bring the studio into the low-budget but often high-gross world of genre films. Universal Pictures has made a 3-year first-look deal with Blum and his Blumhouse Productions which produced the Paranormal Activity franchise, and followed that up with Insidious, the James Wan-directed thriller that has already become one of the most profitable films of 2011. A sequel seems inevitable.
The original Paranormal Activity cost about $15,000 and grossed $193 million. The first sequel cost $3 million and grossed $177 million worldwide and the third film debuts Oct. 21. Insidious cost $1.5 million and grossed $81 million worldwide and is still rolling out. This guy is minting money. He’s producing the latest installment of the fright franchise Amityville Horror: The Lost Tapes for Dimension Films, produced the Barry Levinson-directed eco-horror film The Bay, The River for ABC and the Jay Chandresakar-directed comedy Baby Makers. He is producing the Oren Peli-directed Area 51 for Paramount Pictures, as well as The Lords of Salem, with Rob Zombie directing. Blum’s also an exec producer on the John Hillcoat-directed The Wettest County in the World. This amounts to an aggressive move into the low-budget area for Universal, which, if anything, is known for spending generously on its slates.
“We are certain that Jason will be a significant asset to the Universal family,” said Universal Chairman Adam Fogelson and Co-Chairman Donna Langley in a joint statement. “He brings an ability to attract top talent and a keen eye for producing high-quality, modestly budgeted films that are both cutting-edge and commercial. We know that this deal with Blumhouse will equal much shared success.”
Said Blum: “I’m thrilled by the opportunity to collaborate with Adam, Donna and the entire Universal team. I could not ask for a better home for Blumhouse Productions, and I look forward to the slate of films we will create together over the coming years.”

Another win for one of the good guys. There’s hope for this town yet!
Hey – dumbest post of the year candidate! Wolf in sheep’s clothing at best.
You do mean puppy in wolf’s clothing, dont you? Or is it kitten? How insecure must he be to have so many articles written about him and his “success”. We get it dude. You made a ton of cash on a movie you didn’t make OR find. Congrats! Word of advice though: tell your publicist to slow his/her roll…you’re running out of press outlets.
Jason also has some great people working for him. I haven’t dealt with his TV department, but Jessica on his feature side is awesome.
Agreed! Any naysayers here are fools, the guy is super savvy, picking projects well, and has surrounded himself with the coolest and smartest of peeps, like aforementioned Jessica Hall. This is the kind of marriage that we as struggling filmmakers should all be cheering on… I only hope to work with them!

He’s nothing without STEVEN SCHNEIDER!!! NOTHING.
Hi Steven.
That is true.
Is it just me, or did the CAPS make this comment particularly amusing?
Quite a few questionable credits before PARANORMAL ACTIVITY. Glad he finally stumbled across a movie that worked, and managed to parlay it into a studio deal.
Questionable credits are part of the process for most; we all start somewhere.
More innocuous crap for the Uni slate. Good drama shouldn’t only be available on cable tv. Spend less, and get back to storytelling.
good for him! nice guy and a total class act.
he was smart enough to hire Steven Schneider and Schneider discoverd Paranormal Activity and get W and W to let them have Insideous. Yes he can actually produce movies, but he has lousey taste and has had nothing to do with good movies or profitable movies on his own (Tooth Fairy anyone?, Darwin Awards?) How he was able to convicnce Donna et al he was the responsible party for any of these successes, is an amaizing piece of poliictal gamesmanship. Only time will tell if he can hire someone as good as Schneider to keep the deception going. He’s a shrewed businessman, but a tasteless film
maker. And why did Adam let hm go from the Paramount fold? Maybe cause AG knows Jason has little to do with the success of his ‘own’ films.
HORSE SHIT! The guy has excellent taste and the good sense to get movies made and out there on a budget and quickly: I know, as I had the good fortune for a bit to be in business with his company on a cool project that had real potential…
Hey, Pudding-Brain, what have you produced lately?
Thought so.

Blumhouse. Wow, that’s an original name.
Jason’s running with a niche he lucked into and Steven Schneider does EVERYTHING. Classic example of a guy with very little true talent who manages upward well.
Also classic Universal move. Donna and Adam are DESPERATE for any kind of profitability. Oh, and they kiss up to CAA too, so it’s really the perfect deal for them.
Uni signed the wrong guy……it’s Schneider that has the eye and taste that launched Blum’s lucky streak. Everyone knows this……except Uni I guess.
There are no secret deals anymore.
