In his first series writing gig since FX’s Rescue Me, Denis Leary is set to co-pen an adaptation of the upcoming British series Sirens for USA Network. Leary will co-write the half-hour project about the antics of young paramedics with Bob Fisher, who most recently adapted another foreign comedy format, Israeli’s Traffic Light, for Fox. Leary and Fisher will executive produce with Leary’s producing partner at Apostle Jim Serpico, and Hal Vogel and David Aukin of Daybreak Pictures. Apostle will co-produce with Fox TV Studios, where the company has an overall deal for cable projects, in association with Daybreak. (For broadcast series, Apostle has a pact with CBS TV Studios.) It was during a general meeting Leary, Serpico and FtvS execs took with USA that Leary and Serpico mentioned Sirens. The USA brass were eager to get in business with the producers and asked to see a script of the British series. “When we read the material, we fell in love with the leads,” USA’s SVP original scripted programming Bill McGoldrick said. The project is not being written as a starring vehicle for Leary and for now he is only attached to co-write and executive produce, but there is a possibility for him to take on a small role if the comedy goes to series. Created by Brian Fillis, the six-episode UK series Sirens was inspired by EMT paramedic Tom Reynolds’ book, Blood, Sweat and Tea. It revolves around a trio of paramedics who bicker, fight and shag their way through the darkly funny maelstrom of their lives.
USA started its current push in the half-hour comedy genre about a year ago as the network is looking to launch original half-hour series in time for the off-network debut of Modern Family, which USA acquired last summer. The cable network has around 10 projects in development, a couple of them further along in the script stage, McGoldrick said. So far, Leary has co-created two series, both with Peter Tolan: Rescue Me and the ABC half-hour comedy The Job. Leary starred in both. The seventh and final season of the firefighter drama Rescue Me premieres July 13.

“an adaptation of the upcoming British series?” How long before we have: “an adaptation of a British series that a Brit writer is thinking of maybe pitching?” Seriously, when we outsource TV we’re pretty much done.
Leary is coming dangerously close to completing his “shows about emergency services” collection, but I’ll be watching ’till he does.
i, for one, am looking forward to HazMat. also, Bomb Squad.
There is simply no better writer/showrunner in the business today than Bob Fisher. All the talent, none of the ego. With Alan Alda’s haircut from M*A*S*H. Tell me when I can set my DVR.
By what measure? Nice guy? I’ll take your word for it, I don’t know him. But to say “there is simply no better writer/showrunner in the business” than this guy is ridiculous. I think you need to have at least one hit show under your belt to be the best.
wasn’t this called Mother Juggs and Speed?
Bob Fisher is the best. The most dominant knuckleballer in the showrunner ranks.
Rescue Me part deux! Then again, Rescue Me’s been pretty damn good… so sign me up.
Anyone on here remember when Leary was supposed to be the next big comedy star. Turned out to be a one note act. I think the downfall was he needed big picture people around him. Once he ended up at UTA he became third tier and thus no longer the man. They ended up treating his development dude like a busboy. Despite, he’s made a little money. But just a warning that you can be the next thing and end up the next nothing. Hopefully Leary gets back on track. Still has his hair.
Cool story, bro.
Thanks!!
His downfall was that everyone figured out he stole all his material from Bill Hicks.
Well, as the guy who wrote the books, if they want to fly me out to sunny L.A for some meetings and the like I’ll be happy to pop over
and work on my tan provide any service they’d like.I really liked Rescue Me (I don’t think it’s shown anymore in the UK) so it bodes well in my eyes.
Well… Bugger this iPad keyboard and wonky closing strike tags. That’ll teach me to try and be funny.
Hey, this is a show that i can relate too! Bring it Mr. Leary
