A somber Tracy Morgan appeared at a brief press conference in Nashville today, which was organized by GLAAD. It took place shortly after the actor met with local gay activists, including Kevin Rogers, whose Facebook account of Morgan’s Nashville standup act featuring anti-gay jokes created a media firestorm 10 days ago. Here is an excerpt from Morgan’s statement: “I want to apologize to my friends, and my family and my fans and everyone in every community who were offended with this. I didn’t mean it. … I don’t have a hateful bone in my body. I don’t believe that anyone should be bullied or just made to feel bad about who they are. I totally feel that, in my heart, I really don’t care who you love, same-sex or not, as long as you have the ability to love. … To err is human, to forgive is divine. … Thank you everybody for forgiving me.” Here’s the video:

Now Edward Norton must apologize for the racist remarks he made in American History X. And Josh Brolin must apologize for killing gay rights leader Harvey Milk.
And you must apologize for being an idiot.
GET OVER IT !!!! YOU CRY BABIES – LOSERS ……..
And scene!
Sam Kinison is spinning in his grave. Actually, he’s been spinning since the first time someone called Tracy Morgan a comic.
For most of my life I was embarrassed to be from Nashville. Then I got over it for a few years. Now I’m back to being embarrassed.
Beyond ridiculous. The man made a simple mistake, now he must apologize to every human being in the world. Lets hope this same people crucifying the guy never make a mistake.
It’s ironic that GLAAD never is.
You can only fire a gun if it’s loaded. Apologies from people who make hateful comments are all well and good, but why do they make them in the first place? He wasn’t possessed.
I think that it is time to forgive and forget. Lets forgive Tracy and also forget that he ever existed in entertainment.
He’s a comedian!!!! Comedians says some crazy shit. Get over it GLAAD!
Well I guess it’s time now for him to get his own talk show and to quadruple his salary.
Mazol Tov.
I hate how Tracy has to make an apology for telling a bad joke.
Kevin Rogers is quite the opportunist. Sad.
That clip is what I call real comedy! What cracks me up as a gay man is the hypocrisy on display from the liberal front group, “GLAAD.” I have met dozens of gays and lesbians who have made racist, anti-religious and sexist comments. Go to any gay website and you are likely to find comments that disparage one group or another. At least this time it’s not a conservative who is receiving his “comeuppance.”
Another brotha taken to the woodshed by the Gay PC Showbiz Mafia (read Jess Cagle’s editorial in the latest EW for more dramatic, thin-skinned hand-wringing).
You’re officially on probation, Hustle Man, so congrats!
Tracy will survive this, though, because he’s on a show that ironic white folks like, 30 Rock, and has the comforting, protective aura of Tina Fey around him (that equal-opportunity force-field has also insulated Alec Baldwin against his own dumb remarks).
Isaiah Washington wasn’t so lucky.
1.7% of the population is gay – according to their own (non-derogatory) gay researches. 1.7% of the ENTIRE population is gay.
More people dis-like Cheesecake than choose to be gay.
1.7% … and look at how someone has to literally bend over backwards and take it in the ass if someone happens, on purpose or not, to offend this ultra-infinitesimal group of people. Good grief.
How did we ever become a society that listens to, in complete fear of retribution, 1.7% of the population? Should we listen to everyone who is a part of 1.7% of a group of people? Why value this small group over those who want, say, to marry animals? I bet someone could anonymously poll the American people and they’d find 1.7% of the population wanting to.
Just the other day there was a poor girl on eHarmony who loved cats, and just wanted to hug them, and cuddle them, and be with them in her bed and she just cried and cried over those poor cats – and I’m sure if polled, she’s not alone. I’m certain more than only 1.7% of the population would agree with her and want to do the same, right?
Why isn’t the American public listening to animal lovers? They clearly make up way more of the population than gays do. We should listen to them.
We’re 10% but I don’t expect you to have much in the way of reading comprehension considering it’s well known that straight people have smaller brains.
You realize that not only gay people were angry about this, right? If it were only gays, he’d be fine. In addition to the friends & families of that 1.7%, there are plenty of people (especially those who have grown up during the last 2-3 decades, steeped in a pop culture that is generally positive toward gays & features them as sympathetic figures) who disapprove of what they perceive as discrimination against gays and, rightly or wrongly, may even put anti-gay comments in the same category as antisemitic or anti-black speech.
Dude. The eHarmony video was a parody. It was a joke. The fact that you didn’t realize that – or at least hear about that – is scary. And now I can’t take the rest of your post seriously.
dude … the fact that you can not recognize a joke yourself when you see one makes me not want to take your post seriously at all — unless you were joking and knew all along that I knew all along that the eHarmony girl was a joke and I was joking in which case this is all a joke.
But it still doesn’t discount the fact that this is completely and utterly ridiculous in every way.
Glaad are the new taliban. Realize it. Its true. Its incredible their power, reach and intimidation.
Tracy Morgan is a joke – and I don’t mean that in a good way. That said, he does still have first amendment rights and, if he wants to trash people who, let’s face it, deserve trashing, so be it. The only thing that’s a bigger joke is those people who think it’s not only OK to sleep with their same sex but think they’re special because they do. GET OVER IT!!
Christians get mocked mercilessly by comedians and sitcoms.
No apologies ever. I don’t condone Morgan’s comments at all but this is really about Hollywood politics more than anything.
Hate to break it to you, Tracy, but not self-respecting gay person has forgiven you. Hopefully NBC is doing to Tracy what ABC did to Isaiah Washington – send him out on an apology tour then fire him. Until Tina Fey does that, she’s no better than him.
Basil let it go, jeez. Tracy was doing a comedy bit for God’s sakes. Isaiah only said the word “faggot.” I’m seeing a pattern here, scapegoat the black guy. So much for “tolerance.”
:::rolling eyes:::
Hate much?
Forgive you? Not a chance. You’re just scared you’ll be boycotted and lose your job, which you should have in the first place. Dedicate your time to talking to other ghetto idiots about hate and maybe I’ll reconsider in a year. It’s up to you, Tracy. Be a hateful jerk or uplift others.
For all the 15 year boys (and every other impressionnable kid) who felt what I felt when someone said horrible comments like getting a knife in your heart because you’re gay, I would say you deserve better than a mere apology. What has to be discussed is why the hell Morgan said it in the first place. Not addressing that issue makes the incident still hurtful. Until that time my only alternative to respond to Morgan is to boycott 30Rock. The harm is still out there and gay suicide rates are still way too high and this sort of statement cannot be politely swept under the rug.
It’s mind blowing how insanely dumb people are. Tracy Morgan was ranting, he wasn’t joking. He’s here in this video with his tail between his legs because he knows he meant what he said and now feels guilty about it. If it was meant to be comedy and was taken out of context he would have said so. But there wasn’t even a mention of that in his apology. If you actually read what he said you would know there was no joke, no irony…nothing that resembled humor. He was preaching.
Personally, I don’t care what Tracy Morgan’s opinions are of gay people. I don’t care what anyone’s opinions are as long as they treat people with respect and dignity in their actions. I know Tracy has worked with gay people and they seemed surprise by his rant. But people saying “get over it, it’s just comedy” are either dumb or they’re being disingenuous because they agreed with what he said and don’t like the negative reactions from rational minded people or they just like Tracy too much to care.
At some point, you have to look the person who has been grievously offended in the eye and tell them to change the channel, get a refund or FOAD.
I wish Morgan had the temerity to stand up at the press conference and say, “If you can’t take a nasty joke, you don’t actually want to be my equal. You want special status. Well, I won’t elevate one class of human beings above another in my comedy. You’re all fair game. I’m not sorry for what I said, but I am sorry I’m here talking to you whining bitches. Good day.”
I might even start watching 30 Rock if he said something like that.
Santayana, good point! I fear that many folks who make vicious comments are only “sorry” that they got caught.
“He’s a comedian” is a wretched excuse if what he said isn’t funny.
Attacking other people is not a skill. Let him demonstrate insight by making jokes about straight black men.
I’ll tell you where it came from: he’s a comedian. That can be argued, but that’s his job title. The man gets paid to tell jokes. He isn’t paid to tell the truth, or speak from the heart, or even spare anyone’s feelings. Being gay myself, I was offended by Tracy’s comment, and I definitely think he should refrain from ‘stab my gay son in the face’ jokes, but I’m not going to complain ferociously about him doing his JOB. Same with Afflack and Gilbert Gottfried. Afflack knew they were heiring a foul-mouthed comedian when he became the duck, so what’s the point of firing him when he /does his job/? It’s ridiculous.
