EXCLUSIVE: Warner Bros has acquired The Best of Me, the next novel by Nicholas Sparks. No numbers were available, but I believe the deal is similar to the one that Relativity Media made to win an auction for Sparks’ Safe Haven (which just landed Lasse Hallstrom as director). That deal was in the vicinity of $2 million against $5 million, and Relativity Media had a nine-month window to develop a script.
The studio bought The Best of Me in a room where Sparks pitched his novel idea to Warner Bros executives. The main characters are former small-town high school sweethearts from opposite sides of the tracks. The story picks up when they are adults who broke up and took different paths. Neither has forgotten that first love affair, and they meet when they return to their hometown for a funeral. They confront the past and a possible future. The book will be published Oct. 11 by Grand Central.
Denise DiNovi will produce the film with Sparks, and the author’s longtime lit agent Theresa Park will be co-producer. DiNovi is producing with Kevin McCormick The Lucky One, which will star Zac Efron, and she also produced the Sparks’ adaptations A Walk to Remember and Message in a Bottle. Sparks has a remarkably high ratio of books turned into romantic films. Aside from the ones I’ve already mentioned here, his other title transfers are The Last Song, a novel he wrote to be a screen vehicle for Miley Cyrus; The Notebook; and Nights in Rodanthe. True Believer is also in development. His deal was made by UTA and The Park Literary Group.

Nicholas Sparks is one of the best romance writers ever!!
No he’s one of the worst writers ever.
Are you kidding? His books are horribly written. Trite and dopey. I read The Notebook only after reading an interview where he slammed Cormac McCarthy. I almost felt bad for Nick. Not only is he a hack, but he’s delusional, too. He’s the Sarah Palin of the literary world.
First of all, Sarah Palin granted is horrible, but Nicholas Sparks in not. His books offer entertainment, and that is all they are ment to do. He is not F. Scott Fitzgerald or Mark Twain, but he does not have to be. Not everyone has to have some incredible deep meaning or symbolism in there novels. As long as his books sell they will continue to be popular. Nicholas Sparks does a fantastic job of capturing emotions that others simply glance over. Nicholas Sparks is a very talented author, and i believe it is truly sad when people try, and slander his talent.

I really love his books, they are so ROMANTIC and make you want to read it over and over again!! He is one of my FAVORITE book authors (probably the only one) I have ALL his novels and I love reading them. The NOTEBOOK of Allie and Noah is so sad, because it has the Alzeheimers disease thing in it, and that is what my BELOVED father died of 16 yrs ago.
His books are AWESOME!! can’t wait until the BEST OF ME comes out
God, I wish his books would stop being made into movies. They’re the same plot over and over and over again. Especially after that BS with Remember Me which just throws 9/11 in there with no real connection to the rest of the film. Ugh. Terrible.

He’s not a great writer, of course, but he’s a marketing machine with a loyal audience generating profits and keeping a lot of people employed. So get over yourself. (and move out of LA)
In one hundred years Roland Emmerich III will do a movie claiming Nicholas Sparks wrote none of his own work.

Nicolas Sparks says he invented his own genre and doesn’t write romance. Suuureeee…
Nicholas sparks provides people with inspirational love! His books are not always predictlable like many romance novelist! If you dislike the books don’t read them if dislike the movies don’t watch them! He provides a mental release where you can escape your hectic day to day life! He shows great workmanship, love, inspiration and detail!
I love Nick’s book and he isn’t where he is by writing bad books…his books are clean and well written. These are not comic books folks. Kudos to Nicholas Sparks and Kudos to his movies!

Even though his novels are often predictable, one can get lost in the fantasy for a short time. I have enjoyed reading each and every one of his books, and am presently anxiously waiting for this year’s contribution. Thanks, NS!

He didn’t write Remember Me. So, what does that have to do with it. If you don’t like him that’s fine. Making fun of people saying they have no lives is just sad, especially when you’re the ones online slamming people you don’t know about things you know nothing about. I hope your lives get better.
Sparks may not be the Apostle Paul, but he made $16,000,000 last year. Patterson has a writing team, so he doesn’t write nearly all of his work. He made, oh, around $80,000,000 last year. Who gives a rats a** if they are the greatest writers? Who said they were wanting to be in American Lit books in the year 2050 as the greatest of the great literary master minds. Even Sparks admits that writing is a difficult task. If any of you critics can earn $16,000,000 writing ANYTHING, go ahead and do it. Thanks and have a nice day.
After reading and seeing several interviews of Sparks, I gotta say I’m liking him as a person. (Yeah, yeah, I know I don’t KNOW him but he just seems extremely likeable.)
I agree if u don’t like the book stop buying them and don’t watch the movies if u hate them. Why complain about it and continue to do it. Unless u have experienced things he is writing in the book you have no clue the true meaning. He is an amazing writer. Something brings you too his books and movies otherwise you wouldnt be complaining!
I had to quietly laugh to myself as I read many of these posts. So many are long winded rants about how bad of an author he is or how bad his movies are or that they are both predictable. But, for as much as you are bashing his writing ability, you still searched him, you still read about him on line, you still watched interviews, read articles, etc… If you don’t like his work, here’s a thought, STOP READING ABOUT HIM!! No one is forcing you to read his books or watch his films. Oh yea, exactly how many great books have you written???? Now, back to my book……..

But listen to me: Nobody is forcing you to either watch the films or read the books. I don’t believe there is anything in the world that EVERYONE likes. What is the point in hating things? There is a reason his books and movies do so well. Because a lot of people enjoy them! So let the people that enjoy them enjoy them, and occupy your time with something YOU like instead…
nicholas is a fantastic writer.If you think differently then obviously you dont now what a great book is.He is the best writer ever and i love him.I never want him to stop writing ever!So to all those who hate him your out of your mind because he is amazing!
