EXCLUSIVE: Relativity Media has optioned Ecstasia, a futuristic drama that was written and will be directed by The Cooler helmer Wayne Kramer. Kramer became available after he exited the Sylvester Stallone-starrer Headshot, and he expects this to be his next film. It came to Relativity through its relationship with Richard Branson’s film label, Virgin Produced. Set in an “alternate universe,” the drama occurs at a time when love no longer exists, except when it is artificially simulated through a costly procedure called “commitment.” Ecstasia is accomplished through computer chips implanted in each couple. They are incredibly expensive to maintain, comparable to managing a mortgage. Those who cannot meet the cost are forced into “dissolution,” which ends the emotional link. Kramer’s film revolves around a man and woman who are 10 days away from losing their “commitment,” trying desperately to refinance their love. The film will be produced by Jason Felts, Rene Rigal, Ryan Kavanaugh, Tucker Tooley, Matt Rhodes and Renee Tab. Kramer’s repped by WME and Sentient Entertainment.

Wait… what?
Me smells a “hey, look, we are still in business” press release.
Yikes!
Is there such a thing as too high of concept?
Not even sure that you’d call this high concept. This might actually have something to say about a complex human condition – and most high concepts today are about over simplification.
Regardless, it sound interesting.
FRESH & COMPELLING
I read the script last week. AMAZING!
I liked this film better when it was called Equilibrium.
Script is nothing like “Equilibrium.” It’s closer to “Running Scared” meets “Eternal Sunshine” with a touch of “Gattaca.” The most original love story I’ve read since “Eternal Sunshine” but way more commercial. “Equilibrium” is a cool movie, though. Very underrated.
This sounds awesome. Way to go Wayne!
My wife and I traded in our chips so we could pay for our children’s school.
Read the script first before commenting. TIA.
Oh hells yes. Lots of potential in this flick. Good character motivation to do extreme things. Can’t wait. Good for you Mr. Kramer.
I love Kramer’s films…but this doesn’t sound good. However, the description of the film from people in the comment section sounds way more badass.
i saw this…it was called REPO MEN
This one sounds like crapola. The simple scripts are the most difficult to write and often the most rewarding. Once the rules widen and it is part this and that you are heading down into let’s say it, crapola territory. Kramer, make great stories. You don’t need to be Danny Boyle.
Okay, here’s what it is: the story is set in an alternate universe where love doesn’t exist. But you can buy love called “Commitment” much in the same way you’d buy a house. They reel you in with a five year interest only starter plan called Phase One, which hooks lots of young couples. They go through a computer dating like process where they match up with each other and if they like the look of their match, they agree to go forward with Commitment – which electro-chemically simulates the honeymoon love period of a relationship for as long as you can keep paying for it. Our hero couple have been married for five years and they have ten days left to refi their Commitment to Phase Two, but don’t have the funds to make it happen. They know in ten days they’re going to wake up as strangers to each other and this sets them on a dark, fucked up journey to try and come up with the moolah to stay in love. The script goes to some dark places a la Running Scared, but never loses sight of the romance or the couple’s binding relationship. We get introduced to a dystopian world of underground brothels where you can sell your body for an hour or two in an abridged version of Commitment, so that the hooker is actually in love with her client… and blackmarket Ecstasia operations where you risk brain damage and reverse effects as an outcome… You can also buy blackmarket E-blockers which block the effects of Ecstasia, so that you can cheat on your Committment if you get bored with perfection. The engine of the script is a ticking clock counting down the time the couple has left, which makes it as much a thriller as a love story. And, of course, nothing goes right for the couple and their situation gets progressively more desperate by the hour…
Stop bitching. Thank god it’s not a sequel, remake or comic book. Way to go Virgin!
Kavanaugh. Kramer. Rhodes. All trying to show the world a movie can flop before it is even filmed.
AC,
Sounds good. I’d see it.
