With Cheryl Cole now officially off both the U.S. and the U.K. versions of X Factor, speculation is growing that she may join the upcoming U.K. adaptation of The Voice, and that has ignited a bidding war for the format between the BBC and ITV. Its breakout success in the U.S. on NBC has made The Voice format a hot commodity in Britain, but until recently, the show had been fully expected to go to the BBC, which is looking for a replacement for recently cancelled So You Think You Can Dance to air on the most lucrative night in Britain (and most of Europe) — Saturday. The British press started circulating the rumor that Cheryl Cole was at the top of BBC’s wish list for judges on The Voice last month, with speculation intensifying as Cole officially became a free agent. And the possibility of ITV star Cole joining rival BBC reportedly had the brass of the commercial broadcaster reverse their original decision not to pursue The Voice. BTW, according to British media, other singers pursuied for the British Voice are George Michael and Robbie Williams.
TV Editor Nellie Andreeva - tip her here.

Nellie, expected better from you to be completely honest.
I have it on good authority these rumours were a fake story Cheryl Cole’s management asked her friends in the papers to write, when they were trying to get ITV to pay £2.5M to return to the UK X Factor. It was meant to scare ITV into keeping Cheryl, but did not work.
Secondly, the UK rights to The Voice have not yet been shipped around to local broadcasters, so talk about the BBC having the rights are incredibly premature, especially when BBC aren’t likely to have the rights given it’ll be auctioned by Talpa for millions (and the BBC strictly refuse to bid for series).
Lastly, the format comes with a strict rule regarding the coaching panel, enforced by the format creator John de Mol. The coaches need to be recognised vocalists themselves.
Cheryl Cole is not a vocalist. Her range is incredibly limited. Every performance she has ever done has required live Auto-tune. So this rumour is bogus just for that.
This was a fake story concocted by tabloids and had nothing to do with Cheryl’s management team. The tabloids used the same story a few weeks prior with the other judge that had abruptly left the show.
As far as claiming she uses auto-tune for every performance. That is a bogus statement.
SHE CAN’T SING!!!!!
You are so WRONG. LOVE Cheryl songs FIGHT FOR THIS LOVE, PARACHUTE and PROMISE THIS. CHERYL IS A GREAT SINGER
Exactly, I don’t understand why some people are so selective on what they read in tabloids at their own convenience. Cheryl is not pursuing a career in The Voice and her management team didn’t put that story out. When Dannii Minogue, the other British judge, left the show, the tabloids also put a spin on it and said she was in talks to join the Voice which was stupid.
This is really a no brained for Cheryl and the BBC. It’s tough for any show to match the X-Factors popularity but with the UK version having a weak judging panel the addition of Cheryl can really prime them for a big win.
The UK version has Gary Barlow which is arguably one of the most respected names in British pop. You can’t get any stronger than that.
I think you mean Gary Borelow
I believe the coaches actually have to be able to sing well on The Voice, at least on the US version. That would be a long way removed from Cheryl’s skill set. She may have been in a girl group and had songs out, but ‘good singer’, she is not. She would be even more publicly embarrassed than she is now. On the US show, the coaches give technically singing advice, help develop the vocal arrangements and also sing on the show. Love them or hate them, they are all music superstars in their genres. Cheryl is – not. For me, that is the main thing that distinguishes The Voice from it’s peers – all of the judges have masses of credibility as singers & performers. If the British TV networks are so desperate to have Cheryl on a show, they should develop one that actually fits her.
Cheryl Cole can judge people vying to become the next pop concoction, but she has as much right to judge great singing as Paula Abdul did on American Idol. Every sensible premise in this industry becomes a joke for the sake of “good tv.”
Just curious, anyone know why Saturday night is the most lucrative night when it’s such a wasteland over here?
I love how people are acting like Cheryl can’t carry a tune in a bucket. In a world where Katie Waissel, Gamu, and Diana Vickers are considered vocalists, and Rebecca Ferguson can nearly win a singing competition, Cheryl Cole is far from the bottom of the barrel when it comes to singing skill. It’s astonishing to me how low Cheryl’s reputation is as a vocalist, especially when she’s compared to the misbegotten group of “premier vocalists” the UK reveres. She has a lovely tone and her lower register is beautiful. And she shows all that off while commanding a stage with an incredible performance.
And the “fact” that Cheryl has required auto-tune for every live performance couldn’t be further from the truth. She’s mimed maybe one or two performances. The rest have been done with intense, exciting choreography.
People need to get off their high horses.
No, you need to get off your fandom high horse. While Cheryl may not be the worst singer she certainly isn’t the best, and she’s definitely not as good as any of the singers you mentioned.
Well, I will admit Cheryl might be better than Katie Waissel and and Diana Vickers (who both suck completely, especially Katie), but she is no where near as good as Gamu or Rebecca Ferguson and it is an insult to claim she is just as good if not better than them.
hey im a big fan of cheryls can you please try get her to perform at summer jam concert in Ireland would make my day
I really, really don’t care about her anymore. Can she and her UK fans just go away already and stay in UK with her. If they love her so much then let it be.
Tommy if you think Cheryl “assualt case” Cole is a better singer than Gamu,Rebecca Ferguson or Diana Vickers you really need your ears tested thats like saying Britney is a better singer than Adele.
I think you need to get your ears tested too comparing Gamu, Rebecca and Diana to Adele
And I think you need to learn how to read with comprehension.
I agree with B- that you seriously need to learn how to read with comprehension, and you also need to get your eyes and brain checked if you didn’t understand what Eoin was saying. He/she isn’t comparing Gamu, Rebecca and Diana to Adele but saying that saying Cheryl Cole is a better singer than them is like saying Britney Spears is a better singer than Adele — I.E. IT’S JUST NOT TRUE. He/she wasn’t comparing them to Adele at all.
And actually while I agree that they aren’t as good as Adele Rebecca Ferguson and Gamu are actually really good. I will give you Diana Vickers though, she isn’t the worst singer I ever heard but she isn’t the best either. Personally I think she sucks.
so cheryl was supposed to return to x-factor. TOLDJA… not.
The Voice coaches have to be great singers? I guess no one told that to the nasally, range limited, light weight singer Adam Levine. One of the weakest male lead singers of any current pop rock band isn’t considered a great singer in any capacity.
Cheryl doesn’t need anyone to stir up talk for her because she’s an obvious choice, like Paula going to X-factor
How can the BBC pay for The Voice?
They have no money!! See this week’s “The Economist”
Are there really people who actually stop and read these updates on this minor celebrity and whether or not she’s going to be on this show or that one? Snooze.
Ummm…you did? You apparently stopped, read AND commented.
I hope this doesn’t mean her four day/two city guest stint has allowed her to be considered a US celeb. If so we’ll be stuck with hearing about her forever like in the UK…
This story is getting more attention than this girl merits. Very few people in the U.S. had heard of her before X-Factor; and most of us don’t care, but this is still one of the more heavily reprted stories on TV and entertainment sites. Why?
Maybe because people do read about Cheryl Cole, and the sites get traffic on stories regarding her? Maybe more people in the US actually know about her than you realize? Just because you may not know or care about her does not mean no one does. There may be quite a few who do.
There aren’t. I am a US citizen who knows of her (by a fluke) and I can honestly tell you I don’t know a single person in real life or a single US friend online who knows her. There are a few out there yes, but it’s an extremely tiny minority which probably only takes up 1% or less. Any new ones know her just because of the show. Sites probably mainly do this for all the British traffic they amass saying her name.
speaking as an American i L O V E CHERYL. AND TO SIMON WHAT A FRIEND YOU ARE? YOU STAB CHERYL IN THE BACK
The story is not about to get swept under the rug with the british press.
ITV will offer more for the show. BBC is apparently at an disadvantage because it ‘claims’ it doesn’t have millions to bid for the show plus no premium call lines are allowed on it’s broadcast. Nor can it have songs from the perfomances downloaded immediately on like iTunes.
But BBC want it just incase ‘X Factor’ drops without Cowell, Cheryl and Minogue. Which means it might get the stepmother treatment. Plus ITV would just have to go with 2 hits and wait till one of them sizzles if ‘X’ was to air in the fall and ‘VOICE’ in winter.
And given how dependent ITV is on Simon Cowell for their biggest entertainment shows, they would do all they could to make sure Simon is happy.
Either way, seeing which net lands the rights to THE VOICE and when it’s set to debut is going to be interesting.
Simon Cowell hates seeing Cheryl hurt and yet it was Simon that stab her in the back. he went behind her back to remove her from the panel and then Simon didn’t even have the courage to tell it to her that she was fired and sent another friend to tell Cheryl that she was fired. of course Simon says it was because he wooied about her. he should have to her first and tried to come up with a consensus decision. because it was clear that Cheryl didn’t want to loss the U.S.job but instead Simon let the press run with nasty story about Cheryl for ten days. before he gave his side of the story to save his face, well done Simon, now that Simon not only caused Cheryl so much stress. Simon has also humiliated her in publicly. YOU KNEW YOU WOULD NEVER GET A CALL FROM CHERYL. YOU SIMON STAB HER IN THE BACK
The real story is: Why Do We Care? Oh, we don’t! There, that was easy. Can you please get this non-story out of here please?
