With no resolution in sight over a lucrative Fox Sports TV deal that would give owner Frank McCourt the cash influx he needs to continue operating the Los Angeles Dodgers, the team filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy Monday. The move allows the team to use $150 million for daily operations and gives the franchise some time to find a new TV deal; Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig rejected the proposed long-term deal with Fox last week, saying “the transaction is structured to facilitate the further diversion of Dodgers assets for the personal needs of Mr. McCourt.” Baseball had already taken control of the team in April. Said McCourt — who faces a costly divorce that could force the sale of the team, skyrocketing payroll obligations, declining attendance and a commissioner that is sick of it all — in a statement Monday:
“The Dodgers have delivered time and again since I became owner, and that’s been good for baseball. We turned the team around financially after years of annual losses before I purchased the team. We invested $150 million in the stadium. We’ve had excellent on-field performance, including playoff appearances four times in seven years. And we brought the Commissioner a media rights deal that would have solved the cash flow challenge I presented to him a year ago, when his leadership team called us a ‘model franchise.’
“Yet he’s turned his back on the Dodgers, treated us differently, and forced us to the point we find ourselves in today. I simply cannot allow the Commissioner to knowingly and intentionally be in a position to expose the Dodgers to financial risk any longer. It is my hope that the Chapter 11 process will create a fair and constructive environment to get done what we couldn’t achieve with the Commissioner directly.”ease issued at the time, “(lead) efforts to improve the fan experience at the stadium.”

The fans of the Dodgers have both spiritually and physically suffered for several years under the McCourt ownership.
Now, with the bankruptcy filing…the pain is about to intensify…and, many individuals and companies ‘might’ be left holding the bag for McCourt whether he keeps or loses the team.
And, most frustrating, is the time these legal proceedings will take.
On a personal note…it is a good thing baseball is close to being my favorite sport…but, I do feel for the great LA Dodger fan base of loyal supporters. Bummer.
The Dodgers don’t need time to find a new TV deal, they need to find a new owner. The reason this deal wasn’t approved is because it specifically allocated money that should have gone to the team to the owners and their lawyers.
This reeks of spite. It is like Frank McCourt is saying to MLB and the Dodger Fans “You don’t approve my contract and you stop coming to my games and this is what you get. I may lose ownership, but you will lose your team for years”.
Frank McCourt is delusional. He turned one of sports all-time storied franchises into utter garbage. “The Dodgers have delivered time and time again since I’ve been owner.” Are you kidding me? The team is bankrupt, he is bankrupt. The housing crash wiped him out and he has no business even owning a hot dog stand, let alone a major league ball club.
Major League Baseball is also a culprit in allowing this to happen in the first place. If they have any respect for sportsmanship and still want to conduct business the right way. Then they shold retake control of the Dodgers and allow for another owner or team of owners to bid and show implicit desire to bring the Dodgers back from being a sideshow.
McCourt and his sidekick Sunkin are not good people. Money is important, but its not everything. These guys are not liked by anyone because of all of this. The Dodgers are impt to the people of LA. Give the people their team back, and go rip off the real estate community. This is insane.
WHAT??????????
NO dodgers on TV. ????????????
What are they siccos. We are forced to put our lives at risk going to a game with the risk of getting beaten up by freaks.
GREAT. ….. thanks bud ….. Let’s see you sit in the stands with the beaters and harasser.
You have no idea what you’re talking about.
Hey Mark Cuban,
Come be the white knight of LA baseball.
Pigs have flown; hell hath frozen over. Los Angeles has finally found a worse sports owner than Georgia Frontiere. I just can’t believe it isn’t Donald Sterling.
It’s quite possible that Frank McCourt is the most delusional person in all of Los Angeles, a pretty great feat considering the huge numbers of deluded wannabe celebrities we have here. He should just sell the team and go back to Boston. The longer he protracts a fight he will surely lose, the more he damages the franchise. He is DESPISED in LA.
Most Dodgers fans have never read a book with 11 chapters.
cheap shot with a wide brush from a dodger hater. lovely. and not related to the topic by anything more than a pun. McCourt needs to get out of the baseball business and go back to the parking lot business.
Maybe they can go back to Brooklyn??
Good. Now move them back to Brooklyn.
