EXCLUSIVE: Josh Friedman, writer/executive producer of Locke & Key, is staying in business with 20th Century Fox TV, which produced the Fox pilot. Friedman has signed a rich three-year overall deal with the studio to develop new projects. Additionally, he will serve as consulting producer on the studio’s new drama series The Finder, a spinoff from veteran Bones.
Friedman, a busy feature writer with such credits as War of the Worlds and The Black Dhalia, has created four TV projects that have gone to pilot, and one of them, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, went to series and ran on Fox for two seasons. 20th TV chairman Dana Walden said she and fellow chairman Gary Newman had been tracking Friedman for a while and finally got to do a project with him with Locke & Key, an adaptation of Joe Hill’s graphic novel. Walden praised Friedman’s convictions to keep the pilot true to his vision and for acting as a very responsible producer on a big-budget production. “Josh is an incredible writer with a knack for creating genre programming, which makes him a perfect fit for our studio which has produced shows like The X Files, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel,” Walden said. “He did beautiful work on Locke & Key, and while it didn’t ultimately go to series, it was a pilot we were immensely proud of. He also has a fantastic sense of humor, which really comes through in his work and makes it very distinct.”
After Fox passed on Locke & Key, 20th TV tried shopping the project to cable networks and received interest, but ultimately — weighing the big uncertainty that a cable network would be able to mount a high-end series against substantial additional costs 20th TV would accrue from keeping the sets up in Pittsburgh and extending the options on the actors while potential cable suitors crunch budget numbers — the studio and producers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman opted to shelve the project for good. “Short of getting Locke & Key picked up, I can’t imagine having a better experience than the one I had with the 20th TV team,” Friedman said. “They trust, they support, they’re great partners who gave me every chance to succeed. I’m excited to settle down with them, build a home, and hopefully syndicate a couple children.” In addition to Locke & Key and Terminator, Friedman’s produced pilots were ABC’s Sherlock Holmes-flavored Elementary, penned under his overall deal at Touchstone TV, and the CW’s Prodigy. Friedman, repped by UTA and attorney Karl Austen, also has received attention for his blog I Find Your Lack of Faith Disturbing, which is credited for starting the Snakes on a Plane Internet buzz and also made noise with the “real-life TV procedural” Sledgehammer And Whore.

Wow, I didn’t know Friedman also wrote features. I know him from TSCC. This looks like a really sweet deal for him – he deserves it. Terminator was a a good show.
They need to continue Josh Friedman’s Terminator The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Stop fucking around already. Put it on HBO.
Good for him. His Sledgehammer and the Whore Blog post is still one of the funniest reads I’ve come across on the internet ever.
This makes me very happy! So glad to know he will be working on great things to come!
Definitely one of the good guys. If ELEMENTARY had been shot this season, would’ve had a great shot at a pickup. Congratulations to Josh and his team!
What has some of the people where I work laughing in that this biz has reached the point where executives are raving about unsold pilots, rewarding what would normally be considered failure. The Fox Network really needs an overhaul at some point since vertical integration isn’t working.
Wonderful writer. I still can’t believe ABC passed on his version of Charlie’s Angels — which reinvented the show in a badass way — to go with a lighter and lamer take.
Terminator TSCC was awesome. The man knows what he is about.
Too bad Terminator TSCC couldn’t continue. It was the best TV ever
Locke and Key was my favorite pilot from last season. It was truly scary and unique with an awesome cast. Even that pop star who played the lead was pretty decent. Soo much better then Alcatraz but i can see why Fox picked that up instead. Locke and Key was truly niche and a tough sell but soo freaking awesome.
So true. 20th needs to make bringing Locke and Key to cable their first deal with him. It would’ve been great on FX or a number of other networks.
The Locke and Key script was great, but Romanek did his super deliberate pacing thing and turned something that could have been great into something that was a chore to sit through.
It did look good though.
TSCC best tv ever?
Didn’t know JF did features?
Stop snorting the vikes and wake the fuck up…
Your writing reads like jealousy. Well done.
You can’t maintain a big property show and this is what happens.
This is why they say you fail upwards in Hollywood.
Josh’s blog, “I Find Your Lack of Faith Disturbing” is ridiculously hilarious. He hasn’t written any new posts in a long time, though. Josh, log back on and give us that edge again, man!
For a moment there I thought you accidentally posted a picture of Kevin Smith instead of Josh Friedman, but apparently Josh is a slightly thinner look-a-like of Smith.
He’s apparently too busy writing never to be seen pilots to bother with a blog. Maybe someone can provide some insight but what about his pedigree screams “throw a lot of money at this guy”? It’s not like Fox isn’t about to layoff another couple of dozen people in the next few weeks. I liked his blog and all but he’s basically responsible for a little bit of cancelled television and some probably better than good scripts that were turned in to really mediocre movies.
I know that’s the nature of the beast and being a good writer has no bearing on being a successful one but is it a matter of the execs at Fox knowing/liking him in particular and rewarding him for what he’s done/might one day do?
I don’t mean to sound like I’m wishing him ill I am just curious if one’s success in Hollywood is truly that arbitrary?
FUNKDUBIOUS — AKA JEALOUS WRITER #52.
Here is what would scream – throw a lot of money at him.. Having 4 pilots produced. That is a good track record in this business and as a studio you want to bet on the odds that someone is going to have a shot of getting something made if you are investing money in them.
Here is what also screams make a deal… he wrote a movie that made over 250 million dollar.
Oh and the fact that people have really liked his development and he is regarded as a great writer across town.
Oh and finally…the studio must have had a great working relationship with him based on working with him on this last pilot.
I know you might find it out but studios dont really love to shell out money for nothing anymore. They must see something here.
In the meantime go back to working on your Good Wife spec and sending out your blind letters hoping someone will sign you, I am sure it will all come together for you shortly!!!!
Cue the jealous writers…..
So he will be assistant producer for The Finder….
The pilot episode of The Finder was just plain boring and
not worth an hour of my time.
The ratings were not as good as claimed…. down9% from the
average Bones episodes.
I guess he will try to save a show which is doomed to fail it
is that bad.
Already the lead female is gone. They plan to replace her
with a 17 year old female. FOX must have owned Hanson a favor
to pick up this crap.
This better not effect his blogging
