Deadline Comic-Con film correspondent Luke Y Thompson files:
The panel for this nearly-in-production fairy tale from Universal brought in some enthusiastic crowds. Director Rupert Sanders, producers Joe Roth and Palak Patel came out first. Joe Roth thought it was important to take a property everybody knows and has an emotional connection to, using new techniques. It’s “backwards engineering” from the Tim Burton ALICE IN WONDERLAND. Patel claimed that if the brothers Grimm were alive today, they’d be proud of this movie. Bold claim. Roth says that this movie has the scale of LORD OF THE RINGS; dismisses concerns about similar movies by saying that nobody remembers Tom Hanks in BIG was the fifth body-swapping movie.
A reel was shown of Sanders’ commercials for CALL OF DUTY, Monster.com, and HALO 3. All clever and cinematic. He wanted to make a war movie, but said SNOW WHITE will have a large scale, and battles with exploding black knights. “It’s not a little girl sitting by a well followed by tweety birds”
Actors on the panel included: Sam Claflin (the dorky missionary from PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 4) as the prince, Chris Hemsworth as the huntsman, Charlize Theron as the Queen, Kristen Stewart as Snow White. Theron described her queen as a serial killer, grounded in reality, and that this movie takes the original concept, turns it upside-down, and slaps it around a little bit. Stewart called this version of Snow White totally un-self-conscious, and adds that she saves the day. (Roth originally wanted an unknown, but then liked the idea of being the guy who could show what Kristen could do outside of TWILIGHT.)
Though the movie hasn’t started filming yet, the screaming fans’ enthusiasm was palpable. Theron got a better ovation here than at the PROMETHEUS panel. Audiences were shown a proof-of-concept short that Sanders made to get the job. A voice-over emphasizes that the theme of the movie is about being confronted with death. Slightly disturbing fantasy images include a white fairy being born out of the body of a crow, giant wooden demons emerging from trees, knights hitting each other with swords and shattering into black stone, the crowned queen bathing in milk, castles on the edges of cliffs, and Snow White petting a giant wolf. This isn’t actual movie footage, and features unknown actors, but gives a sense of the look of the film.
There are eight dwarves – seven is apparently a copyright issue – but one of them dies. Costume shots were shown (Colleen Atwood designs), most notably revealing Snow White as a badass warrior babe in armor with a sword and shield.

This seems like a movie which doesn’t even sound good when being discussed, and is going to be a disaster when filmed. I love Kristen Stewart, but petting a wolf (a la Taylor Lautner) and the theme of death, give me a break. Wars, serial killer queens, exploding knights. It all sounds dreadful.
I can’t hate on nor dislike anything that finally gives Snow White a spine, I’m all for a warrior Snow White.
Her father gets murdered ffs…I would also go in warrior mode if anyone hurt my loved ones.
Like the images and LOVE the description of this Snow White project. I am crossing my fingers for ‘Snow White and The Huntsman’
Hard to get excited with so little to go on (and I’m tired of everything having to be remade “dark”), but Charlize Theron might give it some potential. She’s my favorite African-American actress. I was smart enough to skip Red Riding Hood; hope a lesson was learned there by the creators of this one.
Just change the title and be done with it. This seems so far removed from the original story why keep SNOW WHITE?
Confusing and misleading.
-AND COMPETING WITH RELATIVITY.
First off Kristen Stewart is NO WHERE NEAR as attractive as Charlize Theron. That’s like comparing a Toyota Camry with a Ferrari. That’s just common sense.
Isn’t the idea of Snow White is that she is more attractive.
But, lets not be superficial, I’ve been watching the Twilight movies on Showtime and Kristen Stewart is a decent actress but she lacks the personality and lacks the depth of Charlize Theron. WOW, THE PRETTIER BLOND IS A BETTER ACTOR THAN THE AVERAGE LOOKING BRUNETTE. Now there is a rare one. lol
Where is Hancock 2??????? It would be great to see the romance between her and Will Smith. It was only hinted on in that movie. Oh, Charlize Theron has some hot emotional eyes if you watch the movies close-ups. Ryan Reynold’s is a lucky guy, well, they are both lucky.
Ya, be all superficial then say “let’s not be superficial”. Then CONTINUE to be superficial in the very next paragraph regardless. ASS…
Fyi, I would take Kristen over Charlize in a heartbeat. They are both absolutely gorgeous but I find Kristen much more interesting. That being said, what you said goes against whole moral of the story behind “fairest of them all”, it is not about physical beauty. But you obviously didn’t understand that part when you watched it. So here you are being superficial, kinda like the Evil Queen.
LOL, OK Common Sense 6, could you be a more obvious plant from Relativity?
…best part of that article- not filming yet – Awesome. Viggo bolted from the project because the script has massive problems. Overall, it’s a massive bore of a read.
Rupert Sanders’ work is amazing. This movie will be awesome. I hope my fellow commenters decide to be original and NOT post a bunch of tired hate comments about Kristen Stewart.
Which of his three commercials convinced you that he is able to anything besides blowing a few million dollars on a thirty seconds clip that has no dialogue, no narrative, no professional actors, and has been overthought to death by at least fifteen different, overpaid ad executives and marketing people?
If they wanted a director renowned for stunning visuals and little else, they should have hired Tarsem Singh…. Oh wait.
Was apathetic about both snow whites, and found it funny both studios were freaking out when both sounded boring. But the images from today’s panel made this one seem more promising and intesting. The thought of julia roberts and nathan lane pulling Golden Girls wisecracks together just seems stale.
Twihards wetting themselves over the abysmal one note mope Stewart means nothing insofar as this film is concerned.
This was the best panel of the day. The images are amazing. I don’t think Relativity is even an issue anymore. They can’t compare to this.
OMFG, this wipes the floor with the other Snow White movie…
This version of Snow White will win hands down.
You can keep the sugary and sweet version, I want Snow White to take no prisoners and kick some serious ass and look visually amazing.
DAMN…I AM INTERESTED!
This sounds like a Snow White that truly fights and I am so down with that.
That proof-of-concept short that the director showed sounds amazing!!!
I need to see this movie NOW! hahhaahha
As always everyone looked at their places except Kristen Stewart. And it’s funny how everyone were looking at the camera on posters but Kristen Stewart had to look away, it’s all in the shadow, you can’t even see her face expression… It this how they plan to show her in the whole movie?
I really can’t wait to see this and to see Kristen Stewart in it. And see how bad she will be. Even at the posters she looks ridiculous. She also looks short. Very short.
couple of things i noticed. it seems like roth is trying his hardest to make this movie out to be the next lord of the rings. this is the second time he’s talk about it. the tree on her shield looks a little like the tree of gondor, and snow white in armor reminds me of alice in wonderland. charlize theron looks great though.
So you start with a hallowed family film and you end up with a horror film how???? I don’t understand how anyone in development at universal still has a job?
Fingers crossed but this could be an original and exciting take on the old classic. They have the best costume designer on the planet in Coleen Atwood, who will probably score another Oscar for her work on the film. Glad that it’s going to be dark and edgy, just like Rupert’s commercial reel.
I thought the script was good. There’s absolutely no reason the
film shouldn’t be as spectacular and as much fun as “Alice” or “The Brothers Grimm”, which I personally thought was better written, if somewhat less spectacular. (Don’t get me wrong.I love the Coen bros too, but it seems we were struck by some problem, or two, in logic
that I can’t even recall just now…)
Coen brothers didn’t write the Brothers Grimm. lol.
Was referring to Alice, lol, and sorry, I meant Tim Burton
(though I guess he only directed it.)
The Bros Grimm was Terry Gilliam.
has anyone noticed that these films based on the Grimm Brothers’ fairy tales NEVER do well. not even the one about the actual brothers starring health ledger and matt damon. little red riding hood anyone? which might imply that even though kids are forced to read and hear them growing up that nobody actually really gives a s**t.
That movie didn’t do well because it was ridiculous and a comedy about con-artists. Watch it again before putting it in the bunch.
Actually the Julia Roberts one will compare more to the Brothers Grimm film than this one will. The Julia Roberts one is supposed to be a light comedy. This one is very different in tone and scale.
This one looks pretty good, but it kind of seems like a rip off of the one from the late 90′s that had Sigourney Weaver as the evil Stepmother. This looks more expensive and flashier, but it’s not like it is an entirely new take on old material.
$105 million worldwide isn’t SO bad for the Grimm Bros (though only a $20 million profit on cost). And Burton’s “Alice” at 1 billion?
How much do you need? Or are you only looking at domestic markets again, as too often the case…. Producers know better though.
Alice isn´t a Grimm tale…
Only Hemsworth really looks the goods here. I don’t remember Snow White also being Joan of Arc.
Dark and stylistic images. Looks interesting.
The special effects sound like decent concepts, although it does seem a bit TOO reminiscent of Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter style imagery. It might have been interesting if not for us having to buy into the idea of a sword swinging little girl “saving the day”. Little girls will probably eat it up though, and that is Stewart’s fan base, so it may do well.
I also think it’s a strange choice of roles for someone who’s constantly complaining about fame. Oh well.
Don’t forget “The Crow”. They’re definitely stealing visual elements from that movie. Heard the queen turns into a flock of crows, and that is definitely lifted out of the aforementioned movie. A lot of artistic plagarism going down, if you ask me.
The release date is less than a year away, they haven’t started shooting yet, and they are saying “Lord of the Rings” scale?
Yeah, no.
Lots of pretty words and promises, we’ve heard it all before. I’ll see you at The Hobbit.
great point.
i wonder if thats why they moved the movie from december to june. there was no way this would take the hobbit.
I think they said Lord of the Rings so people will see where they are going, that this will be a an epic warrior Snow White not the light, fluffy, comedy that the Julia Roberts one will be. That doesn’t mean it’s going to be just like LOTR. I think the concept sounds interesting and has a great cast and look already.
Yeah, if there is one thing these people don’t have: the brilliant design team that Peter Jackson has in New Zealand.
Alan Lee
John Howe
Richard Taylor
Andrew Lesnie
Sorry but the LOTR comparisons and the promises of a epic SW are a huge turn off. They have not even started filming yet! At least wait until you have a trailer to back up statements like those. I heard some of the same comments about Red Riding Hood when they started filming and look how that turned out.
Also why even call it Snow White if it has a Joan of Arc feel to it?
If I want Lord of the Rings….well, I’ll rent Lord of the Rings. This may be an “original” spin on Snow White, but it’s hardly original as a whole. It sounds like they’re ripping off some of the best elements from previous blockbuster franchises and repackaging it as something new, when it’s not.
I also don’t understand why Uni is casting Stewart for a franchise role when she’s still in the middle of her current one. I think that’s a misstep on the studio’s part.
This didn’t sound like a good concept and the pictures don’t fill me with confidence. Kristen Stewart is the main problem here. She looks awkward, uncomfortable and dead eyed in the poster. If you are making a movie centered on a kick ass heroine, than at least get an actress who can OWN IT. Kristen is just totally miscast here.
First time director, less than a year until release date, competing Snow White movie, rewritten script, miscast lead, blah Prince, derivative of Lord of the Rings and competing against a crowded summer schedule. Sounds fabulous!
I’m pretty sure Kristen was told how to pose by the photographer so don’t be an idiot and put that on her. You cannot even see her eyes and she does not look awkward or uncomfortable. What an idiot!
I disagree. I was a little concerned that they would show Kristen similar to Lily Collins’ character in the Relativity version. I was surprised and happy with the look they provided for Kristen. This is one movie I will see of the two. I always pictured Kristen portraying exactly as they showed.
So the haters hate it because of Kristen Stewart? Is that all you got? Aren’t you tired of that argument already? I knew it was considered ‘cool and in’ to be in the Kristen Stewart ‘She can’t act’ group but it’s gotten OLD now. Find a better argument and just face the fact that she has Robert Pattinson and YOU DO NOT! Sheesh.
Can’t wait to see this movie. The images are great and it’s a nice twist to the story.
Well, we’ve had more sword and sorcery male oriented movies down through the years than I can count. If a re-imagining of Snow White will give the girls a shot at it then I’m all for it. Why should the boys have all the fun? I’ll be very interested to see how Kristen Stewart does in the role. I hope she does well cause this looks like it could be a good kick ass movie. And LotR lite might be a good thing. Shorter anyway. lol
