Who knew there was such appetite for 1990s tween sitcoms? It seems like TeenNick stumbled onto a gold mine with its retro The 90s Are All That 12 AM-2 AM block, which launched Monday, drawing some 555,000 total viewers for the first night, a 114% time-slot improvement vs. last year. The gains were even more impressive in the younger demos: 1.3/417,000 among adults 12-24, up +225%, and 0.6/229,000 in adults 18-34, up +500%. In those demos, the reruns of Nickelodeon’s Kenan & Kel (from 1995), All That (1996), Doug (1991) and Clarissa Explains It All (1992) bested most network late-night shows. On Twitter, TeenNick had eight of nine trending topics worldwide during the block’s premiere.

This is probably the smartest thing Nick has done in YEARS. My and my friends have been having a blast watching our old school shows like Kenan and Kel, Doug, All That, etc. Thank You Nick for finally listening to your fans
What do you mean “Who knew there was such appetite for 1990s tween sitcoms”? How could you not know this? These are the shows we grew up with as little kids and teens for some. Every generation loves to have back the things they had in childhood.
But besides, that, these were genuinely good shows. I was born in ’90 and I’m 21 now. My little brother was born in 2002 and is almost 9. I look at all the things he watches on t.v. and just think of how good I had it. Being truly unbiased, child-teen t.v. is just crap. Haha, don’t get me started on my Power Rangers and the stuff of the same name my brother watches… crap!
That’s just how it is, just like music, older is better. It’s a cliche, but it’s true. Just my two cents.
Not to mention there’s dozens of Facebook groups dedicated to bringing them back to syndication.
I wish they’d gone with Alex Mack, Hey Dude, Welcome Freshman, and Salute Your Shorts over some of the other shows, but in general this was a great idea.
The programming block will be rotating programs. I know Salute Your Shorts is planned for later this year.
“Hey Dude” Season 1 DVD just came out.
If only they’d air “What Would You Do?”
We so need a Hey Dude marathon. And how about Fifteen? To see a 12 year old Ryan Reynolds would be haha.
Hey Dude is on DVD now.
Hey Dude: Season 1 is currently out on DVD…
This is so smart! They are targeting the audience that grew up with these shows, and now they’ve got cash.
The shows they’re aren’t going to be the only ones. Trust.
Some shows I want to see are What Would You Do?, GUTS, Salute Your Shorts, Wild & Crazy Kids, OLD Rugrats, Rocko’s Modern Life, and Aah! Real Monsters.
Hmm… so some executives listened to interns in the 18-24 age range and got huge ratings from their suggestions? SHOCKING. This town is so backwards when 40 year old executives try to guess what 20 year olds want without allowing their assistants to ever talk or suggest something. WAKE UP HOLLYWOOD. You have thousands of people in the demo targets with opinions that you won’t let them share!
Imagine what would’ve happened if NBC had let the pages choose new series instead of Silverman
it’s called Ren & Stimpy, Pete & Pete, and Legends of the Hidden Temple.
This 90′s late night block is pure genius!!! I was born in 1983, but the 90′s raised me. I grew up on Nickelodeon. The shows were actually funny and entertaining. Kids shows today are so dumbed down. I have thoroughly enjoyed the first two nights of #90sAreAllThat and I won’t stop watching until they end it, which they won’t with these ratings. And these weren’t even the most popular shows. Just wait till Hey Dude, Salute Your Shorts, Legends of the Hidden Temple, G.U.T.S., and Are You Afraid of the Dark start airing again. My god, I’m shaking from excitement. Thank you, Teen Nick!!!
Who loves orange soda?
I do I do I do-oooo!
Who knew? Really? Anyone who lived through TGIF. This is the biggest no brainer since adapting the Harry Potter novels.
Speaking of which, ABC might be bringing back TGIF Fall of 2012. Spread the word because when that happens I’ll truly be hyped. What was the 90′s without TGIF. With the revival of Tales from the Crypt and Beavis and Butthead and rumors of Will Smith reprising the Fresh Prince of Bel Air show in some way, is it safe to say this decade will parallel the 90′s? I hope to god it does!
Come on Nick, give us 30somethings what we want, You Can’t Do That On Television! We’re the ones who actually watched your net when it first started.
So the young folks get THEIR shows back but us old people have to live with Seth Rogen as the Green Hornet and Space Ghost as a talk show host
The real genius here is that residual checks are less than the stamps to send them.
These shows were great because Nickelodeon programming used to be about empowering kids and encouraging creativity and imagination, instead of marketing properties into oblivion.
In other words: It’s the story, stupid.
