EXCLUSIVE: After Dark Films has purchased the action script El Gringo by Jonathan W. Stokes. Joel Silver will executive produce the film, which is set to begin production later this year. The plot centers on an American who crosses the border into Mexico with a bullet in his arm and $2.3 million in cash, looking to head to Acapulco and retire on the beach. But he discovers quickly that his plan is easier said than done. Stokes, repped by UTA and Energy Entertainment, also has written Murders and Acquisitions, an actioner set on Wall Street, and he wrote and directed The Last Hurrah, about the last night of a group of students before they graduate college.

The logline reminds me a lot of Charlie Huston’s book “Six Bad Things.” Hopefully it will be just as fun and entertaining!
seen it.., was called “no country for old men”
No Country for Old Men didn’t take place at a bus stop or involve drug cartels, did it? Methinks you actually haven’t seen this one yet. I’m looking forward to it, personally.
No Counrty involved drug cartels — their money was the McGuffin and they were who hired the various hitmen.
Personally, I can’t wait to see the beautiful Baton Rouge desert vistas filling in for a Mexican bordertown. Another winner!
I thought this spec went out year ago from someone other than Energy. What’s the story?
Jonathan is such a talented writer, and this is a long time coming. I’m excited to see El Gringo, having read and enjoyed the script immensely.
Something smells fishy here. This script went out over a year ago from Anthony Vasto. He was a producer on the project too. Why isn’t his name anywhere here?
uh oh. it’s it’s after dark films and courtney solomon. they better cash the check fast before it bounces.
It did go out last year and didn’t sell. Vasto was Stokes’ former manager. Since then he’s signed with Brooklyn Weaver and UTA. This script fit the model for the action series Silver is doing with After Dark so when his reps were making the rounds with their new clients and Silver was told this script was still avail, they bought it as the final film in that series. It’s a fun script and should be an entertaining flick. Won’t win any Oscars but will get money’s worth.
Pardon the ignorance but who gets commissioned here — Weaver or Vasto? Is there an industry standard practice or is it case by case?
Exciting! The Last Hurrah was an interesting attempt so im curious to see more of Jon Stokes work!
That’s right, it did…bullshit like this is why its so hard to do business in the traditional model. Stokes is very lucky that Vasto paved the way, hope Stokes takes care of him on this.
Hey yomama (aka Vasto), you didn’t really pave the way as much as you obstructed it. Time to let go and move on. You couldn’t bring this one together. Don’t worry, there will be others. Hopefully.
Hey whatevs – THIS is Vasto. First you should get your facts straight and recognize how hard I worked to develop the script, steer it through agencies and production companies, attach directors and beg buyers to make this if you call that obstructing it then you should consult a dictionary too. I’ve let go and am moving on but I think it’s only fair to chime in and let people know the sweat equity I put towards this project. Jon’s a super talented writer and I wish him all the best.
Not yomomma.
