EXCLUSIVE: Annette Bening has signed on to star with Kristen Wiig in Imogene for American Splendor helmers Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini. Shooting starts in late summer. Wiig plays a moderately successful Gotham playwright who stages a fake suicide attempt to win back her ex-boyfriend, only to end up forced into the custody of her gambling-addict mother. Bening will play mom. The script’s by Michelle Morgan, and pic’s being produced by Maven Pictures’ Celine Rattray and Trudie Styler and Anonymous Content’s Alix Madigan, with Steve Golin, Wiig and Morgan the exec producers. UTA is repping North American rights on the film.
Bening, who was Oscar-nominated for The Kids Are All Right, is currently starring with Paul Dano and Zoe Kazan in Fox Searchlight’s He Loves Me, which is being directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris. I’ve heard it’s likely that Bening will be part of the Howard Hughes film that Warren Beatty will star in and direct for Paramount Pictures. She’s repped by CAA.

Aren’t they only about 15 years apart?
20 years – DOB 1958 vs. 1978
My mom had me when she was only fourteen!
15 Years. 1958/1973
WOW! I have read the script and it’s laugh till you cry funny. I can’t wait to see this come to life. Kristin Wigg will be amazing as Imogene. Annette Bening will rock as the gambling addicted mother. Now I’m waiting to see who will play the other characters.
What are you talking about? This script is more dramatic than comedy. You def didn’t read it. It’s actually depressing…..
I hope annette gets offered the role to do the screen version of next to normal that rob reiner is getting off the ground
Can she sing? It would be an interesting project for her. She really deserved an Oscar of Being Julia.
kristen wiig is amazing. brilliant choice as a follow up to bridesmaids. an actress in this town who actually has good taste?? now THAT is news, nikke!
wow. someone actually managed to combine smart, talented actors with a great original script. this movie should be filled with both joy and joyness.
Imogene maybe a gamble. Was Bridesmaids a success because of Apatow, Kristen or the subject matter. I hope Kristen isn’t another Micheal Cera, Mike had one hit “Superbad” and couldn’t get the magic back like Mike Tyson couldn’t get his magic back after getting KO’d by Buster Douglas.
Grown woman “ends up forced into the custody of her addict mother” sounds an awful lot like Postcards From the Edge.
Annette doesnt seem old enough to play the part. She’s easily believable as the mother of a teen to early 20s person… Much as I like Wiig, she’s no spring chicken.
