EXCLUSIVE: Chris Hemsworth will get behind the wheel to star in the role of British Formula One driver James Hunt in Rush, the Peter Morgan-scripted drama that shapes up as the next directing effort for Ron Howard. Cross Creek Pictures is the backer, with Imagine’s Brian Grazer and Howard producing alongside Brian Oliver and Working Title partners Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner.
Talks are underway for Hemsworth to play Hunt in the story of his rivalry with Niki Lauda for Formula One circuit dominance in the 1970s. Deals aren’t done yet, but it’s all shaping up for this picture to happen early next year. Hemsworth is already set to reprise his role as Thor in the Marvel Studios sequel that has been dated for a July 26, 2013 release by Disney. There is no distributor aboard yet on Rush, but considering that both Imagine and Working Title are based at Universal, the likelihood is that the picture will land there. The prime mover has been Oliver’s Cross Creek, which, after making a killing on Black Swan, is in the middle of several major pictures including the George Clooney-directed The Ides of March. Hemsworth’s repped by IFA and ROAR.

Alex Pettyfer strikes out again.
Thank the lord
This is not his project. He is the producer of a competing biopic, so he has not technically struck out yet.
Isn’t he too young for James Hunt?
James Hunt was in his twentys when he was participating in the Formula one.
This is such a limited and difficult subject matter. Only a few films about auto racing have been successful, and most of those were long ago. (The Fast series does not count)
It could be good, but Ron’s recent track record doesn’t give me a lot of hope.
Like racing and Ron Howard…but, not here…not now.
It’s only a limited subject matter in Nascar country, worldwide F1 is huge. Looking forward to this one.
F1 is not that huge in its total reach and impact.. It is limited to a very high income demographic. The price points for tickets are outrageous, and F1 has stumbled badly in its several US efforts. Globally, F1 does have more appeal.
Grand Prix and a few other films dealt with F1. Both Days of Thunder and the Stallone racing film sucked, so using these as a barometer won’t help.
In any case, I believe this will be a really difficult film to craft to generate global box office appeal…period.
Anybody remember that Stallone movie Driven? Days of Thunder? Anybody?
Nice to see this walking block of wood make his first real blunder–this movie will
NOT open. Even
as an international play it’s dubious at best. And what’s messed up
is CH’s quote is probably
in
the 8 mil range after Thor/Avengers.
This could be good, hopefully Morgan and Howard will be back to their A-games this time around. Hemsworth will be working nonstop : he has to wrap The Avengers and Snow White and the Huntsman this year, then this biopic early next year, then the Thor sequel that HAS TO be finished sometime next year to meet that 2012 release date, and there could be an Avengers-sequel in his near future, as well. He did a good job on Thor, so hopefully he will keep up the good work and stay out of trouble. I would hate to see another talented actor lose a very promising career because of standard celebrity-troubles (booze, drugs, violence). At the moment, he could have 3 (!) lucrative franchises on his hands AND a potential Awards-magnet directed by an Oscar-winner and scripted by one of the most respected screenwriters today.
Bottom line : don’t screw it up !
From the films Hemworth is choosing, it doesn’t look like he’s chasing an Oscar, or it’s chasing him.
Hemsworth is a good dude. And ten times the actor of Alex Pettyfer.
Amen to that. Seems like a good genuine heroic prospect.
Great script with a very dynamic rivalry at its core, not to mention there guys were F1 racers were gods back then. Looking forward this.
I have my doubt’s that the James Hunt biopic will be a huge box office success. But if it’s done anyway I’d rather prefer the version with Alex Pettyfer.
