This should be encouraging news for Mad Men, whose upcoming fifth season also has been delayed – after 13 month off the air, AMC’s dark drama Breaking Bad posted its highest ratings ever in its return last night. The fourth season premiere of the series starring Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul drew 2.6 million viewers, up 30% from the Season 3 premiere in March 2010, and 1.45 million in adults 18-49, up 26%, and 1.43 million in 25-54, up 22%. In 18-49 and 25-54, Breaking Bad marked AMC’s second highest-rated season premiere ever behind last year’s series debut of The Walking Dead. Among adults 18-49, Breaking Bad outpaced the July 2010 Season 4 premiere of Mad Men by 19%. So far, Breaking Bad, created by Vince Gilligan, has grown every season.

I compare every show to Breaking Bad now. I’ve never seen a show of such quality before in writing, direction and performance. Incredible.
The Wire ? The Sopranos ?
The show is way better than both of those shows.
Much deserved, best show on TV bar none, plus Vince Gilligan is just a genuinely nice guy, easy to root for him & the show.
Well deserved. Congratulations to Vince Gilligan and the rest of the crew, both behind and in front of the camera. Right up there with “The Sopranos”, “Oz”, “Six Feet Under”, and “The Wire” as one of the best programs to ever grace television. At least this guarantees the (final) fifth season.
i bailed on BB after the first season and you had me interested in getting back in until the mention of Oz as a great series. dudes getting their salads tossed with metal spoons? the show was mostly gratuitous prison violence. which, don’t get me wrong, i enjoyed. but in the same league as Six Feet Under, The Sopranos and The Wire? not so much.
If you bailed after the first season you don’t deserve to watch the subsequent ones.
Seriously, the pilot alone was like Heisenberg’s 99 plus percent pure, blue meth (thanks Gale (RIP) for the analysis). Every episode, even the Fly, is a 12/10, it is a flawless series.
This show is the greatest series of all time. Just when you think it can’t get better or top itself, it does above and beyond your wildest expectations.
Love BB, love Vince Gilligan. Congrats on the great success it is much deserved.
Once you Break Bad, there’s no going back. So true in so many ways.
But Oz was also a comment on the prison system and society in general, which is what made it more than just a prison sex/brutality drama. Remember Augustus Hills’ opening/closing monologues?
Can only hope this helps the show get a sixth season. Six seems right, Gilligan wants to end it after five.
But don’t you want it to end when Vince is ready for it to end, and not be forced by the network to do a 6th season he doesn’t really want to do? I would gladly take 5 awesome seasons over 5 awesome seasons and one mediocre season.
I think Vince went on record that 5 is going to be it. The way they opened 4, you just know something really brutal and tragic is going to happen by Ep. 13 and that is saying a lot in a show that pulls no punches and is willing to go where other series don’t even dare.
Drinks on Gil tonight! Congrats, my friend.
Great. I agree with Bill here 100%: Breaking Bad redefined television for me, it’s actually that great.
If AMC wants to have that show for more than just one more season (and after numbers like these, I assume that that’s a sure thing) I hope they’ll renew it for two seasons at once so that Gilligan can plan out the rest of the story in order to end the show properly. Breaking Bad deserves a well planned out finale and I think it would be good for both the show and Gilligan to have that knowledge as far in advance as possible
Cranston is a superstar.
This show is a masterpiece. It will go down as one of the top five shows of all-time when it’s over.
best show on television. a creative clinic for all of us who do this.
Congrats to the Breaking Bad team! Together with Friday Night Lights the best drama series on TV.
If Giancarlo Esposito doesn’t get an Emmy nod at some point we’ll know just how wrong they are.
Damn first episode, got me so hooked and the week can’t get any slower until a new BB.
It’s good to see such an excellent show get good ratings for the season 4 premier. It is one of the best made, best acted and dramatic shows I’ve ever seen. Season 3 was the best thing on TV in 2010. So far Game of Thrones has been my favorite series on TV this year, but with Breaking Bad back, it might just slip to #2.
By the way, Cranston and Paul are great, but Dean Norris, Bob Odenkirk, and Jonathon Banks are spectacular. Here’s hoping Anna Gunn’s character becomes more likable this season.
This is the best show on TV.
Its an excellent series and I am so glad its back.
I watched the first three seasons in the last two weeks for the first time and was ready for season 4 to start. I think history has shown extended layoffs for these Hugh quality and established cable dramas is good for them.
Season 1 was the weakest of the first three seasons by far. In fact season 1 did not get going until episode 4 or 5 of 7. Seasons 2 and 3 were amazing. If you have not watched them you should.
I did not know about the 5 but it makes sense given the spiral Walter and Jesse are going down. They can’t keep this up much longer.
