UPDATE: He’s coming in as a new team leader on the graveyard shift of the original CSI, filling one of the voids left by Laurence Fishburne, who himself took over from William Petersen. The talks with Ted Danson only started about two weeks ago and closed late today, so this was truly fast casting. The show moves to a new night — from Thursdays to Wednesdays — in the hopes of growing that 10 PM time slot and invigorating ratings. Fishburne never clicked with viewers, and Danson seems like sensible casting. A proven TV star coming into an aging hit is quite a coup. Danson most recently had a gig with FX’s Damages and has been a regular on HBO’s Bored To Death, which will continue.
UPDATE: CBS press release follows:
LOS ANGELES – July 12, 2011 — Multiple Emmy Award winner Ted Danson will join the cast of CSI: CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION, in a series regular role, on the CBS Television Network. He comes to the team as they are still grappling with the professional and personal fallout from last season’s take-down of serial killer, Nate Haskell. ”You can create a new character on the page, but until the perfect actor comes along and breathes life into it, it’s just words,” said Executive Producer Carol Mendelsohn. ”We’re very excited Ted Danson came along.”
“From the moment we all started talking about therole, it was clear he couldn’t be more perfect,” said Executive Producer Don McGill. “Intelligence, wit, warmth, depth of characterand emotion, he brings it all. And now he’ll have to bring latex gloves, too.”

This is brilliant!!! Bring in a seasoned star and we get five more years I bet! Danson will bring such great energy. Fishbone was doa.
I’ll be watching for sure!
the show may only be #30 in the US, but it’s still a huge global property…the key is having Danson be the team leader especially since Helgenberger is being phased out…Danson can certainly do quirky..and he should be interesting opposite George Eads and Jorja Fox…
Why even bother to list co-stars for upcoming films if you can’t even spell their names correctly, CBS? It’s Krasinski, not Krasinsky.
Smart…maybe even brilliant.
Dislike CSI but love Danson so I’ll be watching the first episodes to see how it clicks.
Fishburne wasn’t the problem. The writing and producing was. They betrayed their fans in creating that character. I hope they don’t make the same mistake again because I won’t be back if they do.
yeah, more white people on a CBS show. go figure.
Why does anyone still watch this ridiculous show?
Wow, this is a great diversity casting choice. A ground-breaking representation of the diverse melting pot of the CBS world… a white cast with an older white patriarch. It’s like BLUE BLOODS. Way to go, CBS!!!
I just don’t know about this. I haven’t ever seen Ted Danson in anything that would make me think he would be a great addition to the show. However, it’s not just acting, it’s writing as well and if the writers give us boring stuff like with Lawrence Fishburn, it will suck no matter WHO the lead is.
Not that I can think of anyone to replace Grissom, but it is too bad they couldn’t have brought in a minority or another woman …
Agreed! The Haskell thing was so poorly written, so was Ray’s “terrible secret”. It was this MASSIVE build up and then … nothing.
Fishburne’s character was handicapped because he was the low guy on the totem pole.
I would have gone with someone with a more dynamic personality, who could play big, like an Andy Garcia or Harvey Keitel or go young with some young hotshot like an Imperioli. They bringing in another female lead?
I also love ted danson as I fondly remember his sam malone character on “cheers”.If I started watching c.s.i. again-it would be because I enjoy anything ted is in (not necessarily because I enjoy watching c.s.i.). I think Lawrence is one of the best actors around, but, the writing for his character was autrocious-the man deserved much better. Noone can say the ratings dipped because of him-they dipped because of the boring way his character was written.Looking back on how his character was written-I sometimes: were the writers aware that Ray Langston was alive & well (not one of the dead bodies whose murder they were investigating!) Thank you for posting my comments.
I quit watching when they killed off Warrick.
Fish was NEVER a good choice.
Loved Liev, though.
Meh.
If anyone has seen Danson on “Damages” as Arthur Frobisher especially season 1 you will understand why he is a good choice for drama. “Damages” streams online on Netflix, check it out.
TD really showed his dramatic chops on Damages. People are so focused on his age. What about Mark Harmon? That hasn’t stopped NCIS from being huge. Plus they are adding Elisabeth Harnois as a regular after her guest appearance in the LA episode. It’s all about the writing. If Danson’s character kicks butt from the start, could be interesting. I’m surprised, but after Damages, I’m willing to give it a shot.
Ted is a terrific guy. Wonderful to work with. Has had a great run playing really snarky bad guys (Damages) and funny rich dudes (Bored to Death and Curb). He is a very gifted actor but lacks the one ingredient that Peterson brought to his lead role in CSI…..Intelligence on screen. This is not to say Ted is not intelligent. Quite the contrary. But, when it comes to playing the smartest guy in the room Ted is not the actor to pull it off. Hope they paid him a boat load of cash because the press could be tough on him in this role. Also, very hard to replace the guy who replace the guy. Peterson is a very, very good actor and was perfection on CSI. Wish Ted all the best.
Fishburne may have taken over for Billie but he was never a lead CSI. Ray Langston was a likeable character but I feel that the writers did a crappy job of creating a character that matched Fishburne’s talent and screen presence. After seeing Danson’s performance as Arthur Forbisher in Damages, there is no doubt in my mind that Ted will add something to the show. I’m hoping that his character will have intelligence combined with street smarts-something Grissom lacked.
I’m excited with this selection. It could be just the breath of fresh air that CSI needs. I still watch CSI but since Grissom’s departure, it’s been so dry and boring. LF was absolutely the worst choice ever. Hope TD can pull CSI out of its slump although no one can ever come close to the best and the original…Petersen!
Ted Danson ??? Sorry but he is still Cheers guy , to stereotyped in that role to bring any validity to a character on CSI. I like
the guy but I think this Grissom replacement isn’t going to work.
I think the show will drop off in ratings with this change. Sorry
to say it, because I really do like this show.
