UPDATE: Cenk Uygur Rails Against MSNBC: Was Told To ‘Tone It Down’ & Invite More GOP Guests
Cenk Uygur’s run at MSNBC sure was short. The news network says that it has “decided to make a change” at 6:00 PM ET, the time slot when since January Uygur has hosted MSNBC Live. “It’s unfortunate that Cenk has declined our offer to have him develop and host a program for another time slot,” MSNBC adds. The Turkish American radio talk show host plans to hold a teleconference with the press on Thursday where, the invitation says, he will ”boldly discuss his departure from MSNBC.” The change comes amid reports that MSNBC may turn the time slot over to controversial civil rights activist Rev. Al Sharpton who generated decent ratings filling in for Uygur while he was on vacation.

Keith Olbermann and Current TV probably already called Cenk.
That would be smart for Current but I’m not sure Cenk would give up The Young Turks to do it:
http://news.tubefilter.tv/2011/07/15/the-young-turks-breaks-500-million-views-1-million-in-revenue/
Maybe if he can do both.
indeed, but maybe Current would develop a TV version of TYT
He did both while at MSNBC.
I’m very upset with the dismissal of Cenk Uygur . I really enjoyed his show. I don’t understand why you get rid of the best host on the channel. Ed and The Last Word are the best now. Hopefully you don’t dismiss them.
You can always go watch him wherever he goes. MSNBC isn’t the greatest station on the air, anyway. I’m waiting for Maddow to bail & find something better.
It’s curious that you don’t include Rachel Maddow in your favorites. I don’t see how you could overlook her incredibly inciteful and penetrating exposes on subjects that most of the media won’t even address.
I’m sorry he’s leaving I appreciate him AND HIE STANCE ON POLITICAL ISSUES
Very disappointed that Cenk is leaving. PLEASE do not replace him with Al Sharpton. He may be a good man, but he is not suitable for that show. He has trouble reading the monitors, and argues constantly with the guests …. yells, talks over, etc. I won’t be watching any more with Al Sharpton as host. BIG MISTAKE!
Oh man, he’s an effective, fair, and reasonable voice for the left. There really isn’t anyone else I go out of my way to watch. I will miss him and wish he could have stayed at MSNBC.
The Rev. Sharp is ok…but I will really miss Cenk. I don’t agree with changing his time slot …maybe Rev. Sharp should of been the one to change the old time slot. Cenk was right on and fair with everyone. He had a complete understanding of the issues and always had a sense of humor. Good luck to you Cenk and I hope we get to hear from you soon on another station.
Precisely the reason that I don’t watch MSNBC or FOX – I don’t care about the anchor’s stance, just present the information.
thank u. i see where he didn’t want to have any GOP on his show just his professional leftist friends. At least Rev Al, Lawrence ODonelle talks to GOP teabaggers the far left etc etc. I hope “Obama doesn’t like this” Maddow gets her walking papers too. journalists my foot.
I’d like to respond to your comment, but your spelling, punctuation, and grammar are so piss-poor that I’m not sure I understand what you tried to say. That’s my main clue that the writer must be a teabagger–the education deficit.
Good luck finding a channel that does that… Maybe some of the drier pieces on NPR, or Aljazeera. Fox, CNN and NPR are appalling (though Fox is by far the worst).
NPR is “appalling”? You’re a clueless idiot who obviously never listens to any of NPR’s programming.
This is horrible. Cenk told it like it is. Al cannot even speak solid English and is not of the reputation of anyone better than Jesse Jackson. Cenk was very good and very intuitive. I turn of the channel whenever Al is on for any MSNBC show, he is not good.
I totally agree. Sharpton is not good as a host! I will sorely miss Cenk on TV, although I subscribe to his online show..sigh..
Oh, my bad. I didn’t mean to interrupt your Klan meeting.
Wouldn’t they also have a problem Cenk if they were klan members….?
I like watching REV Al Sharpton. I am amazed by the knowledge that he has on every topic. Give REV Al a chance. I will miss Ceny as well, because of his knowledge and passion about what’s going on in Washington, DC. I will miss him.
I disagree. I think Al has been doing surprisingly well. But sir, he is no Cenk!
I am sorry to see Cenk go but I like Al Sharpton. He did a decent job. He deserves a shot. I certainly wouldn’t switch to Fox or CNN for that matter. At least there is some sense of fairness in reporting on MSNBC.
I agree……..when Al comes on, I switch the cannel.
Me too! Nothing against the Rev, and I get it that these cable “news” shows are entertainment, but he’s just not the kind of on-air talent that can get out from in front of what he’s talking about. You’re so conscious of his delivery that it’s hard to pay attention…and I eventually switch stations in a bit of exhaustion from trying…lol. I hope MSNBC rethinks this one.
Agreed…No msnbc with al sharpton, maybe i’ll check out fox now and then
Totally agree…al talks over people and I just turn the channel now when he gets on….that sucks
Yeah, sure. You can’t watch liberal Cenk Uygur, so naturally you’ll switch over to fascist Fox News. WHAT?! Don’t ever tell this to Cenk’s face.
My guess is you already watch Murdoch Crime Syndicate teevee already.
Al Sharpton does not speak correct English.
I agree that Rev. Sharpton is not that good, but if Fox News is the option, I’ll take Rev. AL any day over those liars.
BS, you have been watching Faux for a long time now. Everybody knows it. Plus your comment is a Fox comment.
Al Sharpton, are you kidding me? The programers at MSNBC are nuts. They must be trying to committ professional suicide because they certainly are not using good judgement. Bring out the straight jackets and reserve thm a place on the unemloymen lines. Al Sharpton? Really!!
All Shrarpton will never live dowm his Tawawna Brawley fiasco. He is a total alarmist..and a trainwreck to watch.
I agree. I still think of him as that old rabble rouser. Some of his rants got innocent people killed and I can’t forget that fact.
MSNBC- are you kidding? Al Sharpton?? I know of at least a dozen people who will not watch him. An awful choice.
Unbelievable, what is up with the folks at MSNBC. The guy was really really good. I love Al, but all sucks reading teleprompters, sucks at doing interviews, and talks like a 3 year old……hate the guy as a news host….As soon as Current builds its news base, MSNBC is going down and going down quick…its bad enough The Ed Show comes on super late.
Absolutely correct. Why would any respectable news organization hire the likes of Al Sharpton, who has never paid a dime of the judgment against him for suborning perjury in the Tawanna Brawley case in an attempt to ruin the lives of two innocent law enforcement officers for the sake of headlines for himself.
Al Sharpton is not a good choice. I agree that his English is not good and his background does not have the integrity that I hope to see in a network anchor. MSNBC, there are a lot of candidates who could do a good job. Keep looking.
I think Cenk is good, but Al Sharpton really hits the Republicans really hard not letting them get away with just their talking points. He is excellent and could settle well soon enough
I like Cenk, but he need to be stronger when interviewing the Gop and not them get away from question the he put to them. I like Rev. Al Sharpton, because he let the Gop know that he is very educated with all of the polictice that are going on and he don’t let them get away with not answer the question. YOU GO REV. AL SHARPTON, RIGHT ON TIME THANK YOU
I like Cenk…a lot…I watched him on TYT on YouTube for a long time before MSNBC…but he’s too over the top, and draws conclusions that go too far beyond what’s reasonable for a mainstream show. Granted, Sharpton has no charisma, but he also, like Cenk, calls it like it is, AND…and this is a really important one to me…he holds interviewees to the questions. If they don’t answer, he points it out, and re-asks the question. Lawrence is also getting good at this. It is one of the most fundamental skills of good, strong, in depth journalism and interviewing that has been lost in the MSM for years now. Groomed, charismatic hosts have shows where they ask questions, and politicians answer whatever question they have in their own head. We don’t get the answers the the questions we want to hear, and the politicians get to spew their talking points ad naseum. Here’s to Rev Sharpton gaining some hosting refinement, and keeping the GOP’s feet to the fire!
I totally agree.
With all due respect with Al Sharpton, I’m afraid your intuitively objective assessment is right on the mark. I have a fairly diffuicult time to both follow and understand Al and eventually lost interests in the discussions. Cenk is great, and quick-minded and assertive but not abrasive.
well Al has more people from his national radio show turned in, besides he gives it to the Republicans real hard like none.
I agree. Al Sharpton grates. And I do the same when he comes on TV, no matter the network. Good riddance to Cenk too. MSNBC needs to hire people who need to know how to appear in front of a camera. Ed? Belongs behind the mic ONLY. Rachel and Chris and Lawrence have it. Sharpton doesn’t and Cenk definitely did not. My two pennies.
I don’t know…….seems a little not so subtle,oh….um…ah….how can I say this? Not inclusive social issues.
Love to see how you would do as host. NOT!!!!
You’re right about Sharpton. He seems to have cleaned-up his act in recent years, but he is no news commentator. He lacks the basic verbalization skills necessary to maintain the attention and interest of the viewer. I too change the channel when he comes on.
As for Cenk, I wasn’t a fan, but I do wish him luck.
Seriously!
As the writer said it, “Al Sharpton generated decent ratings.”
He came in second to only Fox News! They polled male viewers between the ages of (23-49) and he received GREAT reviews.
I knew it would come to this. If Chris Hayes of the Nation (not Islam) had taken over this spot we wouldn’t have heard a peep about whose replacing Cenk. Since it’s Rev. Al, as the writer points out, “a controversial civil rights activist,” this is the route the so-called democrats (progressives)are taking.
Also, to say the man “can’t speak english?” Well, he sure as hell did an excellent job over the past 2 weeks!
You folks are hilarious!
It’s obvious that Al Sharpton doesn’t speak the King’s English. Then along comes Mike to defend him, writing: “…we wouldn’t have heard a peep about whose replacing Cenk….” and “‘…the man can’t speak english?’” This is first-class irony, but for anyone who doesn’t know the difference between “whose” and “who’s” or that the word “English” is always capitalized, the irony is probably lost on him.
Agree completely. Sharpton is and always has been an embarrassment. (I still cannot get the Tawana Brawley debacle out of my mind whenever I look at Sharpton.) Cenk, on the other hand, was a hands-on activist dude whose personality was just street enough to make you feel he really cared–the younger man’s Ed Schultz. Yes, Current TV should grab him. Sharpton, meanwhile, will be no feather in MSNBC’s cap. (But O’Donnell is great.)
Cenk tols it like it is. Rev Al is no substitute, yells all the time. Why don’t u put Ed Schultz back in that time spot, he lost a lot of fans w/change to 10pm
COMCAST is right wing. They own MSNBC. Rachel is next to go. Sharpton is a retarded clown. Cenk knows the score.
YES!!!!put Ed Shultz back in the 6 o’clock time spot
Unbelieveable! Are you man enough to say that your objections to Rev Sharpton aren’t race based? You hit a few of the main stereotypes (i.e. can’t speak English, the reference to Jesse Jackson, and the fact that you change channels when Rev Sharpton is on rather than listen to the issues being discussed.
Racism disguised as a candid critique is still … RACISM!
It took me awhile to get used to Cenk after Ed but I grew to really like him and his show. Where is the counterpoint to FOX? Who isn’t combative on MSNBC? Let’s clear the slate; Chris Matthews, Lawerence O’Donnell, and Ed although I really like him. Who is next?
I loved him…he will be missed! Hopefully Current TV will take him in because he is such a great host!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You rock Cenk!
I cannot beleive you have replaced Genk with Al. I kept watching hoping there would be some comment when Genk will be back and now I hear you have replaced him. You got rid of Keith and now I am watching current;did not even to know the channel existed. I hope Genk will go the current and take more of the audience from you.
I also loved to watch when Cenk was on the air. Al is not believable and I also turn the channel when he is on. He may be a good person, but not a good commentator. Thank God for Ed….
Bad decision
agreed
Agreed. More bad news. I really liked Cenk. He must have pissed off the corporations too many times.
Bill,
Yes, really, really, really bad decision. I adore Cenk.
Cenk was ousted because of his you-tube antics! I’m sure he’ll say, “I was let go because I was too hard on this Prisident and his administration.” Well, when the powers at large (Brian Williams/Tom Brokaw), who love the POTUS, says that he had to go, then, guess what?!
It’s fine to hold this President feet to fire, but when you do it on a daily basis, no matter what the man does, it gets really old- realy quick. Logical people caught on to what he was doing. You people are hailing Cenk as “Mr. Progressive.” It wasn’t long ago that Cenk was a republican. At least his idol (Dylan Ratigan) admitted he’s a conservative. I bet none of you knew this. Cenk will get another shot, but for those who really think Rev. Al was a mistake…..ratings don’t lie!
Yes, it is a bad decision. I really looked forward to his show every evening.
When they first started Countdown on Current I thought it would be a good coupling. Cenk and Current.
I totally agree, unfortunately cable one does not carry the network.
See ya’ll at Current. Come’on Chenk your way to good for MSNBC.
See you soon Rachel
The Progressive TV Dream Team!
There is news on two fronts for consumers of non-ideological (i.e. progressive, not fear-based) political television. It seems that MSNBC is still looking for a winning line-up; MSNBC is still airing Chris Matthews at 5 and 7 pm ET. At 6 it’s flirting with Al Sharpton with rumors swirling that Cenk Uygur will be moved. At 8 Lawrence O’Donnell hosts a more sophisticated if slightly less lively show, with Rachel Maddow and the ever-unpredictable Ed Schultz rounding out the night at 9 and 10, respectively.
Then there’s Current TV (Al Gore’s outfit), vying for a piece of the progressive-talk pie with the recent hiring of uber-host Keith Olbermann.
We’ve got a new starting five, with Ron Reagan at point. Who do you like?
Article and VIDEO:
http://beeryblog.wordpress.com/2011/07/19/the-progressive-tv-dream-team/
This is a mistake. Give Al Sharpton the newly developed show, and leave Cenk be!
What a horrible and disappointing decision!! Cenk threw it down with bravado, but always with honesty, passion and clarity. Who’s pulling the strings there? Who’s next – Rachael and Ed?
And Al, well I guarantee you the curiosity will wear off in about 2 months. He’s quicker than most people realize, but he has 4, maybe 5 arrows in his “host quiver,” and has already become predictable.
Sadly (and cynically) it seems that MSNBC is putting Al up as a foil. He should stick with his good work on the education front where he has real value and can make a difference.
Good luck Cenk – I will miss you at 6!!
I saw this Cenk guy making youtube videos a few years back. I remember thinking: this guy’ll probably get on TV, even though he has the political sophistication of a teenager – probably because of this – since most people are…total fucking morons. let’s face it. right or left. doesn’t matter. take a look at the huffington post comments section to verify.
and al sharpton…the man is practically a criminal. and illiterate i think. olbermann was annoying, but he at least had a certain sharpness. rachel maddow, who is actually kind of brilliant, ought to be ashamed for working for msnbc at this point, which is really just a bizzaro version of fox news.
i doubt this will go over well, given the fact that most internet commentators are…total fucking morons. and i know some dude will reply: “but you’re an internet commentator too, you asshole!” ah…the obvious mind of the internet commentator!
Get Ezra Klein.
good, now Cenk can be on TYT more and hopefully all those other hosts will get less airtime. TYT is only good when its Cenk, Ana, Ben and that old guy.
MSNBC is slowly moving to the right, Now that faux is faltering I expect them to pick up the slack.who knows maybe scarborough will move up.
Ohmygosh! What is MSNBC thinking? Are they nuts? I absolutely love Cenk! Al is okay but he is no Cenk. I never missed Cenk but don’t mind missing Al. Cenk, please go to Current. We miss you! We need you!
4 Words: More. Rat. I. Gan. Maddow is good. Matthews is nuts. The rest are blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
I’m sorry, but Cenk is not talented, and had no business being at the MSNBC ‘level’. Liberal or conservative, Democrat or Republican, white or black (or purple!) you HAVE to be comfortable and confident on-air. You have to have gravitas, a presence, and look like you KNOW you know what you’re talking about, even if you don’t. I never heard him on the radio, but on television, Cenk Uygur is (was) embarrassingly clumsy and inarticulate. He may HAVE known what he was talking about, but he was no broadcaster.
I completely disagree! He had a good audience including me. I looked forward to his show every day. He was the first I watched in the MSNBC que every day. I could find ‘things’ in every host, every presenter I’d like better (different), but I liked Cenk Uygur. Sorry to see him go. Maybe its MSNBC that needs to go. We’re in a catch 22 because liberals don’t own much of the mediaopolosis and we have to just take the slop that comes down. MSNBC has plenty of open time. They can present a broad spectrum of programming so we all (liberals) can watch what we like. So your sour comments don’t make sense. We all need to be open to different points of view, different attitudes: and if you don’t like him don’t watch. There were many of us who did like him. So seriously, how are we going to get a venue where all of us have a chance to open our minds by someone provocative and intelligent can be presented. Take a chance, read a book, take a class in something new: get out of your box!
I Taped Cenk and watched him first – above all others
Al Sharpton? Not so much… seems like he is yelling at us. Skipped to the next show (Rachel, Lawrence or Chris or Dilan or Ed
- but not Sharpton – sorry)
Hope to see Cenk on Current TV (frankly, I like him better than Keith Olbermann – less Ego intrusion)
Good luck Uygur.
It makes me no difference between the two of them. The revved up Rev. is confrontational to those lying GOPers and so was Cenk.
I know some of the racists don’t like Al, but I’m sure he doesn’t give a $h!t about you either. It is what it is.
Listen, both Al and Cenk can be both loud and abbraisive. And Al will need more time to polish his act, though a couple of days he was very smooth, so I know he can improve.
But his passion is second to none, as was Cenks. I will go to Cenks site, something I’ve never done, and check him out from time to time. But I’m already enjoying the revved up Rev. as he pounds on those lying GOPer Congressmen and Senators, even if it gets chaotic and they’re talking over one another. There’s a real friction there that wasn’t there with Cenk. Those GOPers really hate Al, so when he gets in their a$$, that makes them turn red and they sputter and spit. That’s beautiful.
At least that $h!t isn’t boring like the reach around that goes on over on FOX.
Great, he was TERRIBLE. Totally amateur hour. I hated how he always laughed at his own jokes. Looking forward to his replacement.
What i don’t get is Chris Matthews having 2 time slots, give it to Cenk already!
Strongly disagree with your decision to replace Cenk with…anyone. His passion and disbelief in the betrayal of the country by the radical right was a refreshing addition to the MSNBC lineup. Sharpton is O.K. but his monotonous delivery made me change channels. Shame on you.
Uygur was one of the main reasons I started watching MSNBC. Became disinterested in CNN’s hiring of pretty faces with no substance. Sharpton gives me a headache very time I watch I believe the reason he had high ratings was just because of interest in the debt ceiling debate, not him.
Looks like MSNBC is actively targeting the self-victimizing portion of the African-American population. Al Sharpton is as dis-genuine as he is morally corrupt and bigoted. A self proclaimed preacher whose time is spent thumping up his own ego and fanning the flames of hatred rather than reaching out and healing. I’ve seen all that I need of this man during the Duke Lacrosse scandal, the 1987 Tawana Bradley scandal, and his reckless crusade against Imus.
Lets face it. Al is about as interested in helping ‘his people’ lift themselves from poverty as the GoP is in balancing the budget without making the rich pay. He uses similar fear tactics mixed with religion, and interestingly enough people support him for it. I guess everyone loves the man who gives them the easy answers. Sharpton is nothing more than a Democratic side of the Glenn Beck coin.
I am seriously disappointed in the news that Cenk, who gives me hope for the future of public discussion of our country’s important issues, will no longer have the slot between Hardball and Last Word.
I am a person of color who understands the politics and nuances that Cenk brings into the discussions. This is true despite the fact that I am closer to Matthews’ age than Uygur’s. Either Yygur is mature for his age or I’m am youthful at mine. Nonetheless, I’ll watch fewer hours of MSNBC now. Rattigan is on too early and repeats of the other shows are on too late.
Uygur’s program was perfect at a time for me. I love Ed but he’s been moved to far into the night.
Cenk have a great future where ever you go. Be blessed.
God I hope so..I respect the Reverend..like his views..but can barely stomach the show he puts on (to many right-wingers and Tea Baggers)…I’m sure the African American will give him a good audience and keep him on MSNBC (that’s cool)..as for for myself..I can only understand every third or fourth word the good Reverend speaks…that deep southern accent.. I was born in the North West and raised mostly in western Colorado, such a thick southern accent is hard for me to understand
He hit a third rail like Helen Thompson
Helen Thomas
THAT’S RIGHT….REMEMBER HELEN THOMAS, JENK AND WHAT SHE GOT FOR TRUTH TELLING….YOU ARE IN GREAT COMPANY….Thanks for this comment…
Al Sharpton does not articulate well enough to interview guests. We have started switching the channel after watching him for a few minutes.
I didn’t like Cenk either. He was too opinionated and should have had more guests and toned down his rhetoric.
I wonder what Comcast had to do with this?
I also agree. Rev. Al is a good guest host, but Cenk is a better regular host. My vote would be for Cenk’s return.
Al Sharpton s about the worst choice MSNBC can make’ Simply awful!!
I hope Cenk goes to Current TV. I’ll watch him there (as I do Keith) instead of MSNBC.
I think Cenk Uygur was great and I will follow him to his next show
I can not forget Sharpton what he did to the policeman upstate New York
For the being being , I am watching RT.com
hope!! I did not bore you
Merci
C.Cassin
MSNBC’S BEHAVIOR SHOW A LACK OF INSIGHT INTO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE AT THIS HISTORIC TIME. THEY HAVE “NO EGGS”….
I will the integrity of a very intelligent Young Turk,…I want the boldness and truth-telling of Jenk….MSNBC should be ashamed!!
Of course I knew he would be denied a come back. He is to smart, provocative and challenging to be at MSNBC now, which has gone outrageously right. How long will Ed and Lawrence be there? I do not see them staying for much longer. Especially Ed after his yesterday’s comment regarding Obama’s deal with Republicans. Smart people should go elsewhere. I do not even watch MSNBC any more. What for? If I want a republican agenda there is FOX to look.
I think really that MSNBC is loosing it. What a downgrade!
Cenk was the best. He was combative, but what does the other side do? I am very dissappointed that Cenk is gone. Chris Matthews is as confrontational as Cenk. I just don’t get it. The Rev. Al has no charisma and less interviewing ability. Bring back Keith.
Chenk was awesome!!! Never missed a show.
Thank God. Cenk took smug self-satisfaction to a new level. Sarcasm and condescension are only effective in contrast to other tones of voice. Any tone. Can I get a tone. (No.)
Yeah, who needs Cenk when you’ve got Ed? There’s only so much room for smugness, even on MSNBC.
One man’s blind passionate smug behavior is another’s angry passionate indignation.
Ah yes, truth to power suck, how dare Cenk be sarcastic, Cenk, I know you’re telling the truth, but you being sarcastic all the time sucks…
Rev. Al, yeah he’ll be a great host, I tuned in one day when Cenk was on vacation, the Rev. could barely get a sentence out, it was horrible TV…
Yipee, can’t wait…
Mercy…
Yes, I’ve noticed that he allows some of his guests to run roughshod. But Sharpton, say what you will about him, is not at all unbright. And he’ll catch on. He’ll soon be able to figure out how to deal with such overbearing guests. By becoming overbearing himself, which is the usual tactic of MSM hosts? I somehow doubt that. He can be very good at turning a rhetorical loop on his debate opponents.
Oh well cann’t be much worse the Ed, Tinggle (chris) Rachel and Law. So it will just be another talking head spitting out a bunch of lies. What difference does it make who they have on they all say the same thing which is not much truth but a lot of hot air.
Seems you guys are always calling someone a liar, but you never seem to offer any evidence. Care to list some of those “lies”?
You’ve obviously been listening to FOX lies so much, the truth sounds like a lie to you.
You DO know that FOX is more harmful to the brain than micro waves, don’t you.
Oh, that’s right. It’s too late.
asshole
You’re confusing “smug self-satisfaction” to actually being educated and informed.
Dalton, you are absolutely right! Cenk knows exactly what he is talking about. No double talk, no beating around the bush! He says exactly what needs to be said.
No, he’s really not. As a moderate, I can’t stand Uygur. I’ve never been a fan of TYT for exactly that reason: they’re the progressive movement’s version of O’Reilly… they don’t actually offer news, they just offer opinions presented as fact. If that weren’t bad enough, Uygur was condescending and smug to the point that I didn’t want to agree with some of the things he said, even if I already agreed with him. I’m ready for just news, where I can form my own opinion without another talking head telling me I’m either unenlightened, ignorant, or without morality just because I disagree with them. Good riddance, Uygur.
Uhhh….he went to Wharton and Columbia Law. I would call that an education.
Anise Blue: You clearly are only capable of handling the sarcasm and condescension when it’s coming from the bullies on the right and not directed towards you. Awww, poor baby!
Anise Blue was accurate. I used to watch Young Turks before Cenk was on MSNBC, then TYT covered some Britney Spears story and I haven’t tuned in since….but I’ve always had to take Cenk with a grain of salt because TYT was legit but Cenk sometimes shows less passion for the story than he does the degree to which he believes he “gets it.” Sometimes people can be too intelligent for their own good and come off as obnoxious.
I find it hard to believe that the pop music subculture is at the top of “The Young Turks” agenda, and thus takes up a good portion of their air time.
Cenk is straight up honest and will not compromise principle nor honor and will not let you nor any other lie to him without calling you out! There have been reporters like that on news television in the past. There are only a couple left now, but Cenk will lead the way for a younger generation to clean up what we old relics have so screwed up. Our politics will not improve until they’re bared to the public through honest scrutiny and MSNBC hasn’t got that kind of courage or freedom.
Well said! The trolls are out tonight on this site!
And if they are trolls, I suppose you are kind of like a unicorn?
Paul Ryan, is that you??
No, it’s Cenk’s mother!
I agree, Cenk was a creep! I knew he wouldn’t last. Glad MSNBC got rid of him. His smugness was such a turn-off. His opinions were all over the place, making it difficult to determine which side he was really on. He tried too hard and most of the time, looked very uncomfortable in front of the camera. On the other hand, Al Sharpton, raises issues that would otherwise not get coverage and as a life-long activist, he knows how to set up questions and demand answers. Bravo, Rev! Keep up the good work, we need your voice and perspective.
Totally agree. Cenk was shear negativity all the time. So sarcastic and condescending. I am a progressive, and appreciate that he is too, but his gloom and doom perspective wears on me.
Ahh..
Because Al Sharpton is a down to earth, community oriented, and moral man?
Please. Compared to him Glenn Beck looks genuine.
Not liking Cenk does not equal thinking Sharpton is a great replacement.
So Hannity and Dumbass O’Reilly (no Americans involved in Murdoch gate, except Rupert and Hinton, of course, and WSJ (so far) what a delusional dumb ass O’Reilly is) are more your type…the go to FOX and make your unwanted comments…by the way FOX and Roger Ails are going down….
Fully agree, Anise. Cenk’s one dimensional sarcasm was cringe-worthy. The guy definitely seems to know his stuff, but condescension isn’t a winning argument. Too many times I would say to myself “Why is he responding to his guest’s valid points with “yeah, right” instead of with a real argument?” Frankly, if Chris Matthews was on for 3 hours straight I’d be thrilled.
Indeed. Saying, “Yeah, right” is not a response, unless you’re 12.
Everyone wants to tell me how educated he is. I believe it. But in interviews, he just doesn’t have the reflexes or the quick thinking of a Rachel Maddow or Chris Matthews or Jon Stewart, while we’re at it. And in commentary segments, I found his cadence plodding, his arguments broad and ill-defined (and I lean pretty far left, I would love to agree with him). And the relentless sarcasm…oy God…numbing to my brain.
Luckily for him, he seems to have plenty of fans (who assume all his critics are right-wingers for some reason) and he’ll be fine. Nobody else needs to be unemployed in this country.
If he’d “boldly” hosted at 6pm, he wouldn’t have been cut. I didn’t know his radio work but found him as dull as public broadcasting. But leaving there is a bad career move. Whether you like MSNBC or not, you have to admit it’s got a great track record of program development: nurturing somewhat green talent and finding the best format/time period/team for them. And having great results. Let’s hope he’s smart enough not to be heading to KO and Current.
Current will go outside of the MSNBC stable for at least one of the two new shows they’re going to launch behind “Countdown.”
Someone like Markos Moulitsas who hates MSNBC more than Olbermann does sounds about right.
I agree, Markos would be a good host. It was also good to see David Shuster filling in for Keith last Friday.
Agreed! Bring Back Schuster!
You are kidding right? Great track record of program developmment? Their shows are in the basement of cable news ratings and their previous “talent” has largely disappeared. Fox programs typically boast 3X the ratings of imbeciles like Chris Matthews and Ed Shultz.
Fox gets 3X the viewers because most people are stupid.
The filthiest porn is more popular than MSNBC too. Saying FOX gets huge ratings has nothing to do with the content. It just proves a lot of assholes like to be lied to by Murdochs demons.
American Idol gets tons of viewers too. But I wouldn’t necessarily rate their intellectual capacity very highly, just like FOX watchers, who seem to the the most brainwashed idiots I’ve ever seen.
I’d call it more of a cult than a real news outlet.
Fox viewership numbers just go to prove that it’s easier to program and broadcast for imbeciles than for people that prefer reality.
When 30% of America is mis-informed and uneducated, where else are they going to go but Faux Noise? This argument spewed by idiots like yourself about the ratings is simply non-sense. 70% of intelligent news viewers split their viewership between legitimate news networks like CNN, NBC, CBS, ABC, BBC, etc. The remaining 30% watch Faux. THAT is the ONLY reason why Faux has higher ratings. Because they pander to the lowest common denominator and their idiotic, uneducated viewers lap it up as truth to the detriment of thinking people everywhere.
Simply because it’s popular (ie, has high ratings) doesn’t mean it’s worth anything. Britany Spears was popular once too. Doesn’t mean her music isn’t garbage.
i agree.Really dull.
Who?
You realize that “who?” posts are for friggin idiots, right?
Oh please, Cenk didn’t take the so-called “smug self-satisfaction” to any different of a level you can find on CNN and certainly Fox News. What hogwash.
I agree with you. But that just proves that it isn’t “hogwash.” You say yourself that he “didn’t take it any farther than” those bullies… well, if he behaves just as bad, why would you follow him? Is it only okay to be pushy and smug if you agree with him? If so, you prove the argument aimed at progressives by the radical right when they say that you’re tolerant of everything except what you disagree with.
What’s a Cenk Uygur?
BULLETIN: For Immediate release
CROWN HEIGHTS COMMUNITY WELCOMES NEWS OF AL SHARPTON JOINING MSNBC
The Crown Heights Community welcomes that well known race hustling chiseler Al Sharpton to MSNBC, part of the no left wing lunatic left behind employment policy of MSNBC.
Sharpton will now join such intellectual heavyweights as Contessa, ED and Mr. Tingle. Though we will miss the services of Cenk we already suffer from smirk and dumb overload and are certain the the Rev. Sharpton whose record for bluster and rabble rousing are unmatched on cable news will more than fit in with those loveable interrupting, insulting lefty no nothings. It’s not for nothing that MSNBC is called “The Bellvue of cable news!!”
We have little doubt that the Reverend Al, and his co-host Tawana, will more than double the 15 viewers attributed to Cenk in the most recent Nielsen Ratings. When reached for comment, Uygur spluttered, “F**k ME! It’s Ricky Sanchez all over again! Can’t some dumb ass, smarmy, smirking, bombastic ethnic type get no love on the tv?”
Republicans’ worst nightmare.
I don’t know, ask Reek Limpballs.
No, he’s a Republican’s dream. He’s full of vitriol and pretty words, but he’s not nearly as educated or well-informed as he is made out to be. Reading from a teleprompter does not a good enemy make. Intelligent conservatives can riddle his leftist progressive propaganda with so many holes that it looks like swiss cheese. As an opponent, his motions are far too easy to follow. His only motto is: the more left, the more correct. Eventually, left-wing idealogues like Cenk always go a step too far and show everyone how shallow and faux-enlightened they truly are.
Cenk a “Republicans’ worst nightmare.” You have got to be kidding! Trust me, not a republican out there afraid of this guy. You’d be hard pressed to find many that even know who he is. Yep, MSNBC keeps putting out the winners….LOL
Um, no. Current does not want Cenk.
Don’t like Cenk or Al. They’re annoying. Give a show to Melissa Harris-Perry. Love her.
Absolutely… She is BRILLIANT
Melissa Harris-Perry! Probably one of the smartest most interesting political commentators anywhere! Al Sharpton’s delivery makes me want to stick needles in my eyes!
MHP is kinda sexy too, for those of us who like smart women. Al Sharpton cannot have a TV show until he learns to say “ask” instead of “ax.” I mean, that’s the bare minimum anyone we should demand of anyone hosting a news show, right?
And a person shouldn’t be allowed to be President of the United States unless they can pronounce “nuclear” instead of “nuculer”. That would have saved this country from the 8-year nightmare of 2001-2009.
The problem with Melissa Harris Perry is that she is too professorial. As a social scientist, she talks like one, often using a lot of qualifiers instead of direct declarative sentences. I have seen this with a number of professors on TV; they are very informed and aware of how complicated issues can be so they often over emphasize nuance. That is not what is needed for this kind of program. For example, instead of an analysis of how someone develops a position which is obviously ridiculous, we need basic evidence showing that the position is ridiculous.
Excellent suggestion !
I adore Melissa………she’s great!
I like her analysis too. But her hair style lately is so distracting. I finally figured out why. It reminds me of the Borg Queen. It must have something to do with the shape of her head cause corn rows look great on nearly everyone else.
LOVE melissa harris perry….what a brilliant woman….and so much fun…..she’s great with rachel onher show….
Ooooh,that would be great.
Sorry to see him go. He didn’t give a shit about being polite to asshats & called the corrupt racist oligarchs on their crap.
Don’t stopped what u r doin on TYT.
MSNBC has lost Cenk Uygur.
Thank You
Al Sharpton? Oh, NO!Please not that.
I’ve watched Al several times and been pleasantly surprised. I like the way he works. Today he asked a guest the same question three times, noting that the man wouldn’t answer. He doesn’t let people just spout their spin and get away with it. He doesn’t say anything nasty; he’s just matter-of-fact about it.
I’ve noticed that several of thecomments are pinning Cenk against Al- that’s not what this is about! Both Cenk and Al are doing their job! Al is a beginner on tv teleprompters because he is used to speaking from the heart. Those of you criticizing him need to give him a break and time to get acclamated to the teleprompter. Cenk was good, but we need to reserve judgment about MSNBC’s move until we know the facts. Both GOP/Tea Party and Dems should be part of the mix so people can make their own judgments of the facts. Both Cenk and Rev Al call out their guests on rhetoric vs. answers. They have different styles, and I find that they both are interesting. Remember this people ” No one knows what goes on behind closed doors.” I just want MSNBC to bring both sides so I can make my own judgment and hopefully the truth. Let’s stop demonizing the people and push for truth!
I respect the Rev., but I have to turn down the volume during the program and up during the commercials… and finish his sentences and words.
An election-season shuffle is coming, and Al Sharpton is just holding a place.
I think MSNBC will revamp the 5-8 blocks — adding a Chris Hayes show and either a second original hour of “Hardball” or a Chuck Todd Road-to-the-White-House show.
MSNBC has been using Ezra Klein A LOT lately, so I wouldn’t be too surprised to see Ezra Klein and Chris Hayes co-anchoring a wonky late afternoon show to lead into the evening lineup.
I think you are spot on…but Hardball already has 2 slots.I would welcome a Chuck Todd Show and Chris/Ezra show would be terrific.Cenk annoyed me and I shut it off…it wasn’t his politics, but his delivery that felt stilted and unprofessional for prime news slot. And btw…Al Sharpton is doi g a really good job I think?
I would like to see Ezra get a slot. Chris Hayes would also rock, but he may be too busy as the editor of The Nation magazine to do a full time gig. Someone above also mentioned Melissa Harris-Perry, who is intelligent, attractive and very well spoken.
I think they are making a mistake with Cenk however, and although I do like Rev Al, if I have to suffer through one more drawn out “ugghhh ughhh ugghhh” before he asks a question, im gonna’ scream. Since they have moved Ed to the later slot, he seems to stumble quite a bit lately also, it may be past his bed time now
Chuck Todd is horrible…talk about smug. And he typically seems to have no idea what he’s talking about and resorts to pandering to the repubs! If he’s on, I will not watch.
I like the thought…but others who recognize the pluses in the RevAL are right too. He brings a direct yet respecful old school quality of questioning that is refresing. (his voice quality and promter timing needs some work). [But] Chris/Ezra, Rev AL and occassional (dare I say) Michael Steel, sitting at table al a “crossfire” would be a heavy PM program especially now as we head into election season.
I agree with the poster who mentioned Ezra Klein and Chris Hayes. Ezra’s a complete natural on camera, extremely smart and likable.
Chris, like Ezra, is extremely smart and after what I saw as a rough start has gradually gotten much better as a host.
I also think Melissa Harris-Perry could be an excellent host but doubt she would give her university job.
Still, I’ll sorry to see Cenk go. He finally seemed to be hitting his stride right before he left. I don’t get Current so if that’s where he ends up I won’t be able to see him.
I loved Cenk and will miss him. His “tone” sounded human and relatable. He sounded like ME. He was the Alan Grayson of MSNBC shows. I really hope he does move over to Current! That would be great!
I think the Rev. Al Sharpton will do a good job. He’s shown himself and his style to be very pit-bullish, but with decorum. He doesn’t let his guests get away with skirting an answer like so many others do.
Al Sharpton will be GREAT. Wish he would take on Obama – Sharpton speaks my language and sticks up for the rights, and the issues that are important to me.
Has he made mistakes in the past? Sure – but at least he doesn’t rail against gays while being married to one.
Al won’t take on Obama. He tried to rip Dr. Cornel West to shreds when he criticized the commander in chief.
WHO???…so who cares! get over yourself
Chris with a tingle up his leg Matthews and Ed big fat Schultz will soon follow with their pathetic audience ratings. Listening to Cenk was like listening to a faucet drip.
MSNBC doesn’t seem to get it. We, or at least I, want fire-breathing, in-Republicans’-face Progressives to counter the constant barrage of lies from the GOP and supported and unashamedly broadcast by Faux Noise.
@rcampbell- we shouldn’t get down in the gutter w/ Repugnants,
look at the type of responses on this thread. these are the meanest lowest qualites, truly indicative of poor intellect.. Do you need more? I dare say no. So let MSNBC (the house that Keith Olbermann built) not become as offensive as that Fix noy-news.
Just goes to show that MSNBC and Fox are both niche media, serving very specific groups of people. They’re excellent outlets for people who have pre-determined mindsets, tastes, and expectations but they leave a lot to be desired for thoughtful people.
For me, MSNBC is kinda like a salad from McDonald’s – gives the appearance of healthfulness, really lacks substantial nutrition and only exists within a deeply flawed paradigm.
But they’re all better than the robots you probably watch on Fox. Just good soldiers marching in goosestep to Murdoch’s commands!
Fox air personalities, with a few exceptions like Shephard Smith, march to Roger Ailes commands. In fact, Mr. Murdoch wanted to write an editorial endorsement for Barack Obama in 2008. Roger Ailes, Republican operative, told Mr. Murdoch he would resign if he did.
It’s hard to know exactly what redeeming qualities Roger Ailes possesses, but apparently they are enough to keep Mr. Murdoch from declaring his support for (Horrors!) a Democrat.
drip,drip,drip. you must be a con-servative.
To bad – I liked him. I thought he expressed himself the way I wish I could at some of these idiot knuckleheads on the far right.
Al Sharpton is very annoying…I shall not watch him and instead go to PBS
Liked Cenk, but his show didn’t really feel like it had an angle to distinguish it from the rest of the pack. Sharpton, on the other hand, is a star out of the gate, and had a lot sharper POV. Sorry, kid, you got outclassed by the Rev.
John V. Karavitis Agreed, all these talk show hosts are so much alike that surely the American viewing public has become ruloy bored with the format. And the media doesn’t want a show that will be thought-provking and insightful, they want RATINGS, and the viewing public be damned. I never checked out this guy, heck, I didn’t even know he existed, but replacing him (or anyone, for that matter) with AL SHARPTON is ludicrous. John Karavitis
NOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Not Al Sharpton! If so, I will be on another channel!
Come on MSNBC. Cenk was bad but AL SHARPTON??? You’re kidding me right??
Someone who would even consider Sharpton for this slot is on Acid.
Who?
Um, if you read the article that you decided to comment on it explains who he is.
Al Sharpton! MSNBC must be kidding. Democratic liberals will be leaving this channel in droves if they give the job to Sharpton.
Another wannabe who was as unwatchable as Ed Shultz and KO. At least Al Sharpeton is funnier…
I’ll use the famous words of Halprin…and call this idiot what he is… A real Dick!!! Glad he’s outta there.
