Deadline Comic-Con TV correspondent Gary Hodges Files:
Their characters may be graduating, but Lea Michele, Chris Colfer and Cory Monteith will not be leaving Glee at the end of this coming season, the series’ co-creator and executive producer Brad Falchuk said at the Glee Comic-Con panel this morning moderated by TVLine‘s Michael Ausiello, contradicting recent remarks by fellow co-creator/exec producer Ryan Murphy. “Here’s the exact thing: They’re seniors. They’re graduating. But that doesn’t mean they’re leaving the show,” Falchuk said. “It was never our intention or plan to let these people go… They are not done with the show after this season.” Later on in the panel he revealed they had discussed the possibility of a spin-off show depicting the three graduates in New York, trying to start careers on Broadway, but that it probably wouldn’t happen and he was “leaning against doing it.”
Falchuk also addressed the departure of recurring guest star Chord Overstreet, who was offered a deal to return for 10 episodes with a possibility to become a regular at midseason but declined, the producer said. “We wanted him back because we like Chord personally and had some good stories planned for him and with Mercedes (Amber Riley),” Falchuk said. “He decided he would have opportunities elsewhere that he would like to pursue, and we can’t force him to work. “We told him to go with god.” Here is more from the Glee panel:
With no major movie panels on Comic-Con’s last day, the convention center’s enormous, legendary Hall H was home for the biggest TV panels, starting with Glee. The panel both teased the upcoming film (Glee 3D: The Concert Movie, the staff handing out glasses at the door) and season 3 of the series.
The panel kicked off with an extended preview of the movie, starting with fans sharing their favorite characters, then cutting backstage to Britney (Heather Morris) bragging that her boobs looked great in 3D. It then returned to one of her fans, a young woman who explained she had been diagnosed with Asperger’s at age 15 but that Glee and Britney “…picks me up and gets me through it.” Cut to Britney on stage, performing the other Britney’s “Slave 4 U”, complete with racy dance number, to a huge audience. Thankfully the 3D is restrained, and in fact not even present for every scene, mostly used in closer shots of the performers to help them “pop” from the backgrounds.
Next we see a young boy at home, singing and dancing to Teenage Dream – then cut to Darren and the rest of his Dalton Academy kin live onstage, performing the same song. The clip finally closed with the movie’s title card, and moderator Michael Ausiello introduced the panel, which was disappointingly light on cast members: Director Kevin Tancharoen, castmembers Darren Criss, Harry Shum, Dot Marie Jones and Jenna Ushkowitz, then producers Zack Woodley, Dante di Loreto, Ian Brennan, and Brad Falchuk.
Starting with talk about the movie, Tancharoen explained that as we saw in the preview, it would be a mix of the live show and fans talking about how their lives have been affected by being a “gleek.”
Not much concrete about what fans can expect to see in upcoming shows, but a few tidbits did get revealed:
- They’ve talked about doing another tribute episode, and if it happens it would air in the second half of the season.
- Mercedes met an encouraging, supportive boyfriend over the summer, who we’ll see this season.
- Viewers will meet Harry’s parents.
- Darren Criss described Blaine and Kurt in season 3 as “in the honeymoon phase” and about to take the next step in their relationship. Most of the audience questions were directed at Criss, asking about his rumored participation in a Broadway show and a solo album, though he shied from both. “Between Glee and, hypothetically, a Broadway musical, an album is tough to pull off,” though he was careful to say he couldn’t confirm his participation in the latter.
- Of course, fans asked what Sue Sylvester will be up to in the new season. Brennan said she is still running for congress, and has taken her war against Will national. “She’s running on a no-arts platform,” added Falchuk. Asked if they could share any new Sue bon mots, they said at one point she objects to the presence of a purple piano, complaining it looks “like Liberace died on it.”

Fine. Having milked maximum publicity with the original announcement, they’re reneging. A lot of respect for the press — not to mention the audience — there, guys.
Other opportunities? The only opportunity waiting for Chord Overstreet is the cashier job at the In ‘n Out on Ventura.
true. and the send off. true hollywood.
‘We told him to go with God.’ === ‘We told him to go F himself.’
The constant coverage of any nugget about GLEE is growing tiresome. The series started strong out of the gate, but its second season was a mess of undisciplined story arcs and weak scripts. Did not deserve the Best Comedy nomination slot from Emmy voters.
Sounds like a lot of bs pr rewrites.
A panel focused on GLEE pretty much sums up Comic Con now.
The last vestiges of the old Republic have been swept away.
When does the SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE Panel start?
I love you for that comment. Between Glee, Twilight and Snow White…Comic Con might as well be sponsored by MTV and Tampax.
And yet you still read articles about it. The coverage isn’t tiresome, maybe it’s your need to read every Glee “nugget” that is the problem.
Seems like the showrunners are heading towards a creative impasse with each other. A little contradictory in their statements on the direction of the show in the future. Definitely not Emmy worthy here. Make up their minds and be more honest with the viewers.
There’s no need to be cruel tothe kid Larry. I’m not sure how talented you were at 22 but I’m guessing you’d have handled the role no better than Chord. A role I might add that seemed totally thin after the initial preving over Chord with his shirt off by the shows creators wore off. you can’t make something out of nothing meaning no screen time. Then they come to him offer him a shitty deal and expect him to play ball. I’m surprised he had the courage to turn down a bad deal not many young actors have the faith in themselves. But that’s just my opinion, I personally can’t wait to see your next big role on network television Larry in Noho.
I am extremely disappointed. I was so impressed by Ryan Murphy’s strong statements about keeping to the reality of the teenage experience by having the kids graduate and move on. How do they think they’re going to keep them around after graduation without it being pathetic? Finn and Rachel get married and settle down? Rachel gives up her dreams of New York to go to a state university??? Kurt becomes Lima Heights only interior decorator? How are those at all acceptable? I actually thought it was a great idea to have Kurt and Rachel go to New York together to try to make it on Broadway. They could get into Julliard and it could be a more serious show about what it really takes to make it in the real world of performance. So much potential but no, they’re going to hold on to every last rating number they can get till no one cares at all about those characters. Such an amazing waste.
I was hoping Lea “Look at me, look at me I’m a star!” Michele would leave the show. All I can remember is how she treated Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit), who was so excited to meet her and get her autograph only to be brushed off by this bitch.
If you knew anything about anything you’d know that the reports about Lea and Haille weren’t even true Lea never declined her it was the security that wouldn’t let her get passed to actually meet Lea, Lea had nothing to do with it. Also Lea IS the star of the show we’ve known that since the pilot she’s the main character and nothings going to change that.
Yeah so excited to meet her she didn’t even know her name and referred to her as ‘the girl from Glee.’ What a fan. 14 year old Hailee’s let it go. Maybe it’s time for you to follow the example of someone apparently a little more mature than you and do the same.
I can’t believe Chord declined, but I’m glad to hear that Chris, Lea, and Cory will still be in the show after they graduate. I’m also excited to watch the Klaine relationship grow!! I can’t wait for season 3!
Klaine… I think I just threw up a little in my mouth.
JJ I agree 100%, First season was really good, but the second season was a mess, with bad writing all around..And I feel that they are doing damage control now, because Ryan sounded really firm in the interview saying the cast will graduate and leaving the show to be more realistic about high school.
Maybe FOX have something to do with this announcement?
RTA you really are LATE of news, this was resolved long time ago. At least look for something more relevant to bash Lea about it..
Okay how about she leave the show and head back to Broadway so I don’t have to look at her egostical face every week. To me she’s one hit number. Satisfied now Jackie?
Ha-ha-ha.. Now I hate Glee even more.
What was the point of this? To make everyone feel sorry for those three? And then: “Yo, you silly people, we lied to you. They will be back”. And the most funny part? Everyone were like: “Good riddance Lea”
That story smelled from the start. You know they would never let go their beloved Kurt. And how is Kurt senior? He looks like he is 3 years younger then any other character. I thought he would be David Silver of Glee. You know the one who is year younger then everyone else.
The pilot established that Kurt is older than Rachel. A lot of people were happy to potentially see toothless Kurt go also.
What the heck does Glee have to do with Comic-Con!!!!! Comic-Con has lost its soul and Hollywood has taken over now.
What is the point of running a tv show if you are going to ruin every line and plot point months before an episode airs?
Does anyone understand what Glee even remotely has to do with comic-con? Its not “sci-fi”. They might as well do American Idol auditions in Ballroom 20.
Such angry, bitter, trite people–everyone. Lighten up! It’s entertainment, TV, actors, “make believe.’ I guess the childish stance should be expected on a Comic-Con thread.
If you can script the show and characters better–become a screenwriter or producer and go knock-knock-knocking on R. Murphy’s big gay Glee door. If you hate Lea Michelle or Glee–you all seem to know a hell of a lot more than most Gleeks do, let alone the average viewer who understands TV is TV and nothing more. Correct? Thought so. Now come out of the Glee closet and free yourself from your misery!
But thanks for the mid-day laugh, work was growing tiresome and it was a semi-laughable respite.
