It’s not as bad as having to resign in disgrace as New York’s governor after a sex scandal. But Eliot Spitzer still has to look for a new gig now that CNN says his low-rated weeknight talk show In The Arena didn’t make the network’s new line-up that will debut Aug. 8. He’ll be replaced at 8:00 PM ET by Anderson Cooper’s AC360, which will re-air at 10:00. That show will be preceded at 7:00 by an unnamed general news show hosted by former CNBC anchor Erin Burnett. And Piers Morgan Tonight will remain at 9:00.
Ken Jautz, EVP of CNN/U.S. says that the network is “in discussions with Eliot Spitzer about an alternative role. We thank him and the entire In the Arena team for creating a program that moved many political and economic issues into the national spotlight.” Spitzer adds in a statement that his show “engaged serious people in conversations about national and global issues in a way that was informative and challenging. I believe that we provided diverse and valuable perspectives during the show’s tenure. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at CNN.”
Spitzer’s run at CNN, where he was initially paired with conservative columnist Kathleen Parker, seemed ill-fated from the start last fall. The executive who brought him aboard, Jonathan Klein, was ousted just weeks before the debut of Parker Spitzer. Parker left in February.
Here’s CNN’s announcement about its new programming plans:
CNN has unveiled a new evening lineup with anchors Erin Burnett, Anderson Cooper and Piers Morgan to launch this fall, it was announced today by Ken Jautz, executive vice president, CNN/U.S.
Beginning Aug. 8, CNN will broadcast its flagship nightly news program AC360, anchored by Anderson Cooper, live at 8pm and re-air it in its current timeslot of 10pm.
In the fall, CNN will premiere a new general news program with Erin Burnett, which will air at 7pm ET and re-air at 11pm ET. Piers Morgan Tonight will continue to air at 9pm and 12am ET.
John King USA will kick off the evening at 6pm. The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer will continue as a two-hour daily program, airing in a new timeslot of 4-6pm. CNN Newsroom will now air from 9am-4pm. The full programming schedule is provided below.
“The new line-up showcases anchors who are experienced reporters in covering stories that span the globe,” said Jautz. “We created a nightly schedule that brings together the best of CNN’s journalism on a wide range of topics from politics and the economy to global and world events, as well the best newsmaker and celebrity interviews. This line-up ensures viewers access to the best of what CNN has to offer whenever they tune in at night.”
“I’m looking forward to the new time slot and am excited to share AC360 with a new audience at 8pm, while still connecting with my regular viewers at 10pm,” said Cooper.

Although tarnished by scandal, I must say that I was impressed with Spitzer as Governor and Attorney General, and he spoke with much knowledge on his CNN show. Never thought the public would accept Spitzer, but I want to acknowledge that he is a sharp politician…indiscretion aside.
Replacing him with Erin’s show (although she will need to expand her reach) should be good. She is bright and a lot better looking than Spitzer.
Anybody who is “sharp” wouldn’t have had such an egregious lack of good judgment. This man dishonored his family and destroyed his own political career for paid sexual indiscretions. Eliot Sptzer lacks the character and integrity to be taken seriously.
thanks for being the 551,444,677th person to mindlessly repeat the cliched observation that in the past rich guys had mistresses and got away with it.
also in the past:
white people owned slaves
rich people had serfs on their lands
women could not own property or vote
so shall we return to those good old days, bitch owned?
False equivalencies abound. Joe knows shit.
Spitzer took on giants out of a James Bond thriller, and the villains got him. That’s all there is to it. If he’d been as pure as fresh fallen snow, the bad guys would have still figured out how to pin something on him.
….and NASA faked the moon landing.
BS– this was definitely the only show worth look at. Why is is America can’t tolerate bright people– tired listening to the “pundits” who are clueless.
America you have blown it again. Lou Doos, now Elliot shame!
Erin Burnett was always engaging as a CNBC anchor (and her Maxim cover was unexpected), making financial stories more watchable, and I’m sure with the right producer the show will be more than watchable.
Spitzer was great at making points, but the “prosecutor” in him always seeped out; don’t know how good that was for CNN… which needs to strengthen its overall brand. Piers Morgan is a good replacement of King (but it’s so early to tell how good he might very well be).
He was OK, but it’s obvious TV just isn’t a great fit for him.
And Parker was no great shakes either.
I thought CNN would replace Spitzer with Client #10.
I could never hate Spitzer. He has a sexy voice
Good. He was smug and his whole non-domestic political views were not expert.
I actually like Erin Burnett and considering I hate a lot of CNBC programming, that is high praise. Her and the late Mark Haines (RIP) made my mornings tolerable. They were a good team. Mark also never came off like a sexist pig who felt relegated to working with a younger woman. At worst, he was very paternal and protective of Burnett. I am hoping she can do well on her show. It beats watching Wolf Blitzer or John King for another hour of blase programming.
I loved Haines. He really gave CNBC the limited amount of credibility that it has.
Case study for everything wrong at CNN.
Did Klien think cable viewers wanted to see another middle aged, white, liberal, Dem, guy opine about the news with minor semi-disagreement from a middle aged, white, female (easy on the eyes) who was maybe, kinda, sorta moderate/conservative. (only kind acceptable to CNN). Kind of like the lack of diversity over at MSNBC.
Can you say slow motion train wreck !
Did not CNN have any internal candidates ? Any talent or commentators more compelling than an unlikable disgraced
politician ? (So he is smart and articulate…to a NYC liberal).
After four weeks, the show was the butt of jokes and Kathleen Parker was ridiculed and “mocked” as a phony conservative by the right leaning blogs.
Everyone then stopped watching and just ignored it. Fox, MSNBC and Comedy Central are way more insightful and entertaining to their respective audiences than this CNN disaster.
I think the real problem is that TV news people think they can’t just put on actual news, because the Web has accelerated the deadline pressure so much that there’s no way TV can keep up with the Web.
But I think that, in reality, seeing a reasonably well-made TV news show is a lot different from reading a Web story, and that there’s room for both. So, personally, I would be very happy if CNN would de-emphasize talk shows and rant shows and focus more on just putting on videos of fires burning, people shooting each other, members of Congress looking serious, etc.
This is a real loss for CNN. There is no one with such a quick mind in full grasp of the issues and their ramifications as is Gov. Spitzer. He is quite amazing to watch and to listen to and I will miss seeing him every evening. I liked him with Parker but I like him even more without her and with the team that he surrounds himself with. Such a short sighted move on CNN’s part. So nice to listen to someone with such a keen intelligence, as is CBS’ Face The Nation host Bob Shieffer(spelling?). Why are these people so rare in television news these days and made rarer still by silly executive shuffling? What amity for American journalism.
well he was limited in his scope of coverage of news stories….considering his baggage, he was really uncomfortable covering Weiner the few days he did. Also his foreign policy knowledge is very limited……
What is the difference between Anthony Weiner and Eliot Spitzer again?
I really loved his show and will miss it. Despite scandal, he has a great perspective.
Spitzer is actually book smart. Weiner was such a bandwagon hopper on progressive causes and lived for the spotlight but was a lightweight until about 2008. Spitzer, while arrogant, had a good record and impressive resume.
The Anthony Weiner Show would likely rake in more viewers because of what what CMG said. Since Weiner was a bandwagon, and because built up fans by appearing on MSNBC frequently, any network except CNN OR Fox News of course, will have better ratings than Spitzer’s Show “In the Arena”. There are differences between the two of them.
I live in NYC and detest Spitzer, so this is welcome news. As for CNN talking with him about other opportunities within the company, read: His contract has not yet expired and they don’t want to waste money by purchasing the remainder of his contract if they can get him to wash windows.
I just want to watch news. REAL news. Americans were dying in Iraq a week or two ago, and CNN had a news story about turtles having intercourse on an airport runway. THAT is the problem.

PLEASE NIKKI – set up a button like NYT has so readers can rate favorite comments (and not have to do this). Grazi.
Eliott Spitzer had his faults I’m sure (and who hasn’t) however..I have been very pleased and somewhat surprised..the man is exceptional, his manner, knowledge and grasp of any subject any broadcaster would be proud of…I’m a big fan of CNN even with all it’s warts..I think it does an admirable job of staying to the middle, or at least attempting to…which is more than any one else on cable does…I hope you find a place for Spitzer he has a lot to offer, and if you don’t will find a home (other than Fox, I hope).. I’m one of those old broadcasters (since 1949) that remained a swing voter, always, and managed to stay away from party affiliation and now I know why..
I live in Manhattan and remember the minor earthquake Spitzer’s behavior caused. I have to say, i think he’s one of the smartest minds in politics out there, but I could never get past the client 9 baggage. It’s really a shame because he was a fine governor and who knows where he might have wound up. But, ultimately, people do have to pay a price for their really outlandish behavior. Of course, if the ratings were great this wouldn’t be happening so it’s not like he’s being punished for his misdeeds. A sidenote: how can his wife still possibly stay with him. Hats off to Maria Shriver for having the guts to kick Arnold’s sorry ass out. Silda Spitzer is a coward and a terrible role model for her 3 lovely daughters.
I can’t watch any of the partisan wind bags (doesn’t matter which side) but I’d love to see Spitzer end up at Fox News where he could articulate the other side of their “balanced” opinions.
i actually liked the show….and after seeing both client 9….and inside job….i know he cheated on his own….but monied forces definitely took him out….because he wouldn’t let big money interests screw over the middle class….
Louisiana Senator David Vitter patronized the same escort service as Spitzer and is still in office, so the sex scandal should be considered apart from the great work Spitzer did as Attorney General and as Governor. The movie, “Client 9,” iterates how financial bigwigs, threatened by Spitzer’s pursuit of their corrupt dealings, went after him knowing that a sex scandal would end their problems. Since the Governor left office, Bank of America and other big financial institutions have gone back to their wicked ways. Spitzer was the Sheriff of Wall Street – my hero, for sure.
Fire Morgan next! He is talentless and terrible and deserves to go.
Agree Josho….P.M`s unwatchable
(The executive who brought him aboard, Jonathan Klein, was ousted just weeks before the debut of Parker Spitzer. Parker left in February.)
Why did he bring him aboard and why didn’t his bosses tell him what a stupid idea it was?
There are soo many great talents out of work or under employed why Mr Klein thought bringing him into CNN is a story that a good reporter should get on…there has to be a reason to make you station a laughing stock.
@ aaronsch: can it, prude. Just because Spitzer did one stupid thing he can’t be taken seriously? By that logic, if we’re to take you seriously, you’ve never made a grave mistake in your lifetime? Otherwise, who are you to judge others?
The problem is that the “one stupid thing” he did (and do you really believe it was this once?) required lying, violating the law, and betraying those closest to him. If he can betray and lie to family members he purports to love with such little regard, then what chance does his constituency have at honest leadership? A “mistake” is when you add up the bill at a restaurant incorrectly. A personality disorder is when you, as a prosecutor supposed to uphold the law, think you can pay for a hooker, cheat on your wife, and deceive the public all at the same time.
The other problem is that you just don’t get it.
I thought Spitzer was a real natural. I don’t think CNN knows what to do with him but he’s the only one I could stand to watch during the Japanese disaster. CNN is so awful and Spitzer was a real bright spot.
I envision a Spitzer, DSK and Weiner roundtable show opposite “The View.” Needs a good title, though. Suggestions?
CNN is supposed to be the most respected name in news. You wouldn’t know it from the hiring and firing. I didn’t want to watch Elliot Spitzer in the beginning but since most of the others are dumbed down, I started. At least he had a brilliant mind and his interviews were always fascinating.
E D Hill and Will Cain were no match and brought the show down. They were also very biased.
back to reading books.
It figures that Eliot Spitzer is going to be taken down…he was one of the only smart interviewers/commentators on CNN. My husband and I will miss watching the show. He’s charismatic, articulate, and bright…hopefully, he’ll be picked up by another network.
I guess it does not pay to be intelligent and to question a lot of the false right wing dogma that primes nowadays. Spitzer clarified many issues that are known only to people that puts the effort to verify that the information is correct. He was fluent, clear aand did not allow BS to fly easily as truth.
The rest of the CNN programs just present the two points of view (Reps vs Dems) as if they were equally honest. At this time in history, the Republican party has been taken by extremists that are really damaging this country and all CNN does is give the extremist voice equal exposure as the more reasonable voices.
Now the only one left at CNN that is worth listening to is Mr. Zakariah.
